Re:Another non "The Sky Is Falling!!!" article on
I didn't read the whole article, nor do I intend to. I wondered, skimming over it, how these new "findings" could go against everything that almost every other scientist has produced in the last, what, 20-30 years? What about all of the researchers in all of the countries that supported the Kyoto Treaty??
Welp, it turns out that I won't accept this site as a valid impartial news site, and here is why, first, on this page the following was mentioned. I do not buy that idea that the media is "liberal", and I like it even less when a news company forces itself to go more conservative to somehow balance this out - this type of bias has to be at least as bad as the perecived liberal bias:
I want to help the news wire get the right news, right now to millions of people around the globe. I value CNSNews.com's dedication to balance and how it sets the record straight by using fact to debunk myths about cultural and policy issues.
But the following bit on this page is what did it for me about this news site - this is a bit too "balanced" for my taste:
Marketing and advertising is vital to alert more people to the fact that they can get balanced news -- at CNSNews.com. Our goal is to let the public know that Rather, Jennings, Brokaw & Co. aren't their only option, and that they can turn to CNSNews.com for more reliable and balanced news. To promote CNSNews.com to the widest audience possible (as funds will allow) we advertise in newspapers, magazines, directories, and on talk radio. CNSNews also produces other promotional material to distribute to the conservative movement.
Politically speaking, wouldn't a conservative "christ/god's laws" follower be pro-environment, and not pro-business?? What would christ do? Wasn't he a liberal in his time? If you treat your body as a temple, what about your planet? Is the left so right, so threatening, that you need to FIND and MAKE UP stories to combat this false threat? What are you so afraid of? The truth??
Balanced my ass... -

Global Warming Models Labeled 'Fairy Tale' By Team of Scientists
By Marc Morano
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer
May 14, 2002
Washington (CNSNews.com) - A team of international scientists Monday said climate models showing global warming are based on a "fairy tale" of computer projections. The scientists met on Capitol Hill to expose what they see as a dearth of scientific evidence about global warming.
Hartwig Volz, a geophysicist with the RWE Research Lab in Germany questioned the merit of the climate projections coming from the United Nations sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC.) The IPCC climate projections have fueled worldwide support for the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to restrict the greenhouse gases thought to cause global warming.
Volz noted that the IPCC does not even call the climate models "predictions" and instead refers to them as "projections" or "story lines." Volz said the projections might be more aptly termed "fairy tales."
Monday's luncheon was sponsored by the Frontiers of Freedom Institute and titled "Whatever Happened to Global Warming? Climate Science Does Not Support the Kyoto Protocol."
S. Fred Singer, an atmospheric physicist with the University of Virginia and the Environmental Policy Project, called the IPCC's global warming projections "completely unrealistic."

You can read the rest yourself. I enjoyed it greatly I've often said exactly what these scientists are saying, and I get flamed for it. Bring on the flame-throwers, oh Chicken Littles!

Re:What's a hacker to do?
We might be nice and borrow Pakistan's airspace just long enough to send over B-52s to drop leaflets warning civilians near targets to get out of the way, but that's it.
Except that more than 66% of the population can't read!!! (three references, I got bored finding more good ones...) Less than 16% of the women can read, they can't have an education, they can't hold a job. Propaganda won't work unless it's by word of mouth.
All of these statistics were gathered before the Taliban (who executes anyone that tries to teach women) was firmly in place. It has become even worse since... -
Web Sites Culpable For Terrorist AttacksEarler today, someone sent me a link to an article at Cybercast News Service (CNS) that is incredibly biased and attacks once again, freedoms such as privacy, search warrants and generally suggests more invasive and heavy handed actions by our government.
The article was one one sided, and lacked any sort of journalistic integrity. Here's my letter to the editor:
Dear Editors,
I just got finished reading your piece on domain names that may have been warning signals of the terrorist attacks last week.
This article was horribly biased, and I hope a retraction and a more balanced and informative article will replace it.
The quotes in the article from Neil Livingstone have very limited view points that seem to waver close to extreme when it comes to attacking civil liberties.
Mr. Livingstone also seems a poor choice to quote on this matter, since his comments show that he doesn't understand how the domain registration system works on the internet.
Below, I've pointed out some passages from the article (specifically quotes from Mr. Livingstone) which show his lack of understanding on the technical details involved in registering domain names and his lack of respect for civil liberties and freedom.
"It's unbelievable that they (the registration company) would register these domain names, probably without any comment to the FBI," according to Neil Livingstone, head of Global Options LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based counter-terrorism and investigation company.
It's not surprising at all. Hundreds of thousands of domain name records are created and changed every day. Most of the transactions are handled by computer, and human operators don't even look at the names being registered. I've been dealing with domain registration issues for many many domains, going as far back as 1994, and in that time, not once have I ever spoken to a human representative from the registration firms I've dealt with. This is involving hundreds, if not thousands, of domains that I've been responsible for over the past 7 years.
To protect his sources, Livingstone would not say with which company the domain names in question were registered. He had no information about the identity of the person or people who registered the names.
His sources? Mr. Livingstone couldn't have had sources on this matter. The records are quite public, as your story goes on to point out. Anyone with a net connection can find out when a domain was registered, and who the administrative, technical, and billing contacts are.
"This is something that someone should have noticed," he said, "but privacy issues probably kept it from being noticed."
Privacy issues? ANYONE can get the information his "sources" gave him. It's not private to begin with. His attack on privacy doesn't have anything to do with the subject of the article, and seems very out of place.
...Livingstone believes authorities should have the right to investigate inflammatory rhetoric, even something as simple as the registration of a web address that might indicate criminal intent. And, evidently, he thinks that we should just forget about those constitutional protections that already allow this, once the proper clearance has been given by the courts in the form of search warrents.
It seems as if he's suggesting that due to a national tragedy, we can trample the constitutional rights of our citizens in order to ensure "safety."
In the future, I hope you'll present more balanced and technically accurate articles, with a broader sampling of opinions and viewpoints evident in the people you quote.
Thank you,
Ben Stanfield

What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells which can divide in the laboratory and which have the ability to develop into certain kinds of specialized tissues. There is several types of stem cells, all of which are not used for research. The stem cells being used for research are called human pluripotent stem cells. These cells can develop into most of the organs and tissues of the human body, but they cannot develop into a human life without the help of other types of cells. (National Institutes of Health)
These stem cells can be derived from fertilized eggs at a certain point during the development of the embryo. More information about this process is available in the NIH's publication, "Stem Cells: A Primer,".
some religous orginizations are NOT against it.

well, the estate tax affects the ass-sitters you describe.
Only a little, assuming their lawyers and accountants don't really suck. These are the sort of people that really catch the brunt of it.

Re:This could be very dangerous
Why does everyone here start with the assumption that global warming is even real? There is *very* credible evidence that there is no such effect, and a number of scientists have stated as much, but they're not getting the big megaphone from the UN and radical "environmental" groups.
Radical leftist "scientists" and their computer models have been known to intentionally lie to us before: witness the laughable computer predictions of the original 1970 Earth Day and the Club of Rome "Limits to Growth" fiasco which assured us with certainty that we would be completely out of oil, gas, copper, zinc, gold, and tin by now. Oh, and the pollution was supposed to be killing us off in the midst of the massive famines that have never happened. In fact, we now have more of all the resources listed above at our disposal than we had then, pollution is sharply down, and food production is at all-time record levels.
A few links that point this out the fallacy of global warming:
A good BBC article with coverage of some reasonable scientific dissent
A good overview of this from Reason magazine
Another article exposing the political as opposes to scientific basis of the IPCC report.
http://www.globalwarming.org is the source of these and other links exposing the truth about global warming, which is quite simply that there's no credible evidence that it even exists, and that the global warming crowd employs some of the worst science ever seen so long as it fits their political agenda.
It never ceases to amaze me that the numerous self-proclaimed libertarians on Slashdot are so willing to cede their liberty to a politically motivated cabal far more dangerous to our society than the RIAA or the MPAA could ever be. Wake up and pay attention to the things that really matter, and will impact your real freedoms in the future in ways that are truly Orwellian... -
Top heavy on cap hillWell, our VP can't find email lost on White House servers for years. Estimates $3 million and 2 years to repair. And when the problem was discovered years ago, rather than fix it, the techie who found it was threatened and the lost "Project X" mail was classified a secret.
Now that's a technical innovation. And one techie without much influence in a political situation. Various news sources have been noticing the story at various levels this week.
