Collectorz
http://www.collectorz.com/book/
I've used both their Book and Movie apps for several years.
For the book collection (with just under 8000 in four sections: technical/non-fiction/fiction/collectable) I have a relatively cheap (i.e. $120) cordless bar code scanner.
I've just moved my Video collection (around 700 dvd's) from their PC Application to their Cloud app (which I have mixed feelings about. Nice to have it on the cloud and shareable, don't have to worry about updates or backing up, but lose a handful of useful features - like loaning and list printing).

possible solution
Check out http://www.collectorz.com/book/
$50, catalog, search, lists, sort, entry by isbn or barcode scanner, loan management, publish to web, etc.
I've used it for my home library (1500+ technical/scientific books, 15,000+ fiction books) for several years, and it keeps getting better with each release.

Collectorz
I used to run a shipboard library while I was in the Navy and used http://www.collectorz.com/book/ It is relatively inexpensive feature filled downloads cover art so patrons of the library can See what is in the library. I don't reccommend this for anything over about 1500 books but it sounds like your library may be smaller than that. I thiink you will be pleased with it.

I'm on a Mac and I use Delicious Library
My brother uses the different products from Collectorz which run on a bunch of platforms.
Or you could just use spotlight? Thats what I have been using and it works fine for me.

Re:To do it effectively won't be cheap....Don't be put off by the nay-sayers. It's actually not too hard and not too expensive.
I've been playing with RFID for about 5 years, and it's great for remote controls, tape measures, and other easy to misplace items.
I also managed to get it to work with the Collectorz software, so I can 'check out' a book or movie.
The hand-held reader I have is powerful enough so that I can stand in middle of a small room (approx. 10' x 10') and get a reading if the item I'm looking for is in the room. Handy for finding stuff. It was around $200, and that was a year ago.
I'd post the make and model number of the reader, but I haven't been able to find it for a couple days. I probably should have tagged it.

Re:Pirates disgust me
I spoke to a guy who does DRM for an online game publisher. Once, they rewrote their algorithm which instantly rendered all existing cracks for the games useless. Sales jumped by 40% that month. Why? surely none of those who cracked the stuff would have bought it anyway?
I get where you're coming from on that, but cracks also sell more than a couple of items as well. There are far too many programs out there that are crippled until you purchase them, and of course, you can't really find out if they do what you want until you purchase them.
As an example, I was looking for a program to catalog my DVD collection a few months ago and stumbled across Movie Collector. The main thing that I wanted from this program was the ability to easily export to HTML... this program does that, but you have to pay to use that feature. Had it not exported in a way that I desired (not all fields are supported, bad formatting, etc. - I saw a lot of horrible design / functionality decisions in other programs before finding this), that would have been $40 wasted. So, I cracked it, found that it did what I wanted, and then...
Thank you for your Collectorz.com purchase. This e-mail is to confirm that we have received your payment information and that your order is being processed. Once the order is complete, we will send you the license key(s) for your software products and installation instructions to get the full version up and running.
Had I not found a crack in order to decide whether or not the export feature did exactly what I wanted, they never would have got my money. -

Book Collector from Collectorz.com
http://collectorz.com/book/
I've used their software to catalog my collection of approx. 1500 CDs. It doesn't come close to the visual beauty of Delicious Library, but it is very powerful and easy to use. The pro edition is $40 but well worth it. The company is very responsive to user input and is very generous with their licenses (free upgrades for life, discounts for multiple items purchased, etc.). -
What I did.
I did the unthinkable and purchessed some software for windows.
Like you I wanted to use a barcoder to make my life easier. This is the product I used http://www.collectorz.com/book/. I was pleased with the result and my wife can use it easily. -
Re:In My Books & RecordsI'd love to have them embedded in my books, DVDs, and so forth so I could get an inventory and stop buying the same books over and over again because I can't remember which ones i own..
:(Scan the barcodes. Eg with http://www.collectorz.com/book/. I keep meaning to have a go at this for my books, but doing my CDs used up this decade's allocation of can be arsedness.

Re:CD's in big 5 inch binders
I just stumbled on to this today: Music Collecter which looks like a great tool for organizing your collection. Enjoy.

A few suggestionsHaving finally gotten control over my ever-burgeoning CD collection, I can offer a few humble suggestions:
As far as the actual jewel cases/booklets themselves there are many ways you can go, depending on your lifestyle and the size of your wallet. For a few years I was quite content to store my CD's in a combination of shoeboxes and the cheap CD racks you can find for $10 at the CD store. Which works fine up to a point, although it makes organization difficult and it isn't exactly attractive. So, unless you're living in a dorm or your parents' basement you're probably looking for something a little nicer. I recently made the purchase of one of these, which also comes in smaller sizes as well, although I found the large version nice as I can also store my cassette's and DVD's in it as well. In addition it's very attractive and doesn't look out of place in my den.
I store my CD's in alphabetical order by artist, then by album name. It takes some patience initially to get everything in order but it's a lifesaver once you're finished. I also find that using a program such as Music Collector helps keep things organized.
Finally, as far as playing the CD's goes, I like the big jukeboxes such as Sony's CDP-CX450 which holds 400 CD's and can be daisychained with another for a total capacity of 800 CD's. As with anything there are advantages and disadvantages to the jukebox system, but it works well for me. YMMV.
