Facts don't change. What is the advantage to having a dynamic source of information if the core information doesn't change? Unless it is just regurgating popular opinion and not facts.
As someone involved with the news paper industry, I have some issues with comments and the conclusions made. The best equivelent of the article would be choseing the failures of the dot com era as your examples and then saying why the internet will be a failure.
It is true that some papers have not adopted adeptly, but many are making the transition. I think that St. Petersburg Times is a fairer example of the adaptation.
I also have to hand it to papers that are trying new things online besides just copying slashdot's format and slaping their name at the top. Newspapers have a long history of managing and distributing information. Don't discount them becuase you don't know what goes on behind the scenes. A cute web page with a few fun features does not keep people coming back. It is content.
I spent three months in Beijing in the early part of last year. And I did quite a bit of web surfing. I experienced very little problems. But I kept mainly to news sites and such.
Supprsingly I find more sites blocked at work when in the States.
All in all I would say you have little to worry about.
