Two key differences are that this is a collaboration of the Dojo Offline project and Google (which grew out of dojo.storage which is based around flash storage) and is using a relational DB (SQLite) as opposed to a flat-file data store.

It's also Open Source and they have support from Adobe, Mozilla and Opera (as mentioned in the Press Release).

I've used their software to catalog my collection of approx. 1500 CDs. It doesn't come close to the visual beauty of Delicious Library, but it is very powerful and easy to use. The pro edition is $40 but well worth it. The company is very responsive to user input and is very generous with their licenses (free upgrades for life, discounts for multiple items purchased, etc.).

  3. Re:Unlocked Phones Exist... on Mobile Phones Locked By DMCA · · Score: 1

Wow for someone who has "hacked" their phone, your really don't understand the basics of this whole issue. Unlocking refers to carrier lock-ins, not the ability to do things on your phone. Yes, there are other carrier specific customizations and things that may be disabled, but you can clear those and still be locked to your carrier. Your post completely misses the mark on this, as do the replies below you.

The REAL reason cell phone companies don't want you to unlock your phone is because you could then use it with another carrier, drying up their revenue stream from you (after your contract with them is up, if you jump ship during the contract period, you're contractually obligated to pay hundreds of dollars for breaking said contract). It has NOTHING to do with DRM and MP3 ringtones.

  4. Re:Which mobile phone company? on Mobile Phones Locked By DMCA · · Score: 1

Both Cingular and T-Mobile lock their phones however the difference is that T-Mobile will unlock after 90 days of service and Cingular will never unlock your phone (even when you're out of contract). That was one of the big reasons (besides the additional minutes for less money) that I moved to T-Mobile.

  5. Re:Either accept it is locked in or pay full price on Mobile Phones Locked By DMCA · · Score: 1

The problem with that logic is that you're still under contract. Take your business elsewhere before it's up and you're forced to pay very high cancelation costs (which more than make up for the phone subsidy). This is about the phone companies wanting to lock your phone that you have paid for (both in initial cost and service fees, which make up the difference between your initial cost and the real cost to the carrier) into their service for life even though you have other (possibly better) choices out there when your contract does expire.

However, that's really not doing much for me if they don't have what I want in stock... Hopefully it's just growing pains with the new terms and they'll iron things out soon.

The carriers are typically the ones who "lose" money selling phones (which really isn't truly a loss, they more than make up for it in the service charges). Cell phone manufactures don't typically have problems making money on their products. I doubt Apple would be losing money on these either. I was very skeptical about the iPod mini (I still don't really understand its appeal- for $50 more you can have 5 times the storage in a slightly larger, yet still extremely portable case), but they managed to outsell even Apple's predictions, I doubt they'd be wrong on this one either...

I agree. I really think the RIAA is just scared that P2P will become the main method that people will use to find out about new artists. Without the need for artists to promote through the Clear Channel monopoly of homogeneous radio stations, the musicians gain the ground that the music industry loses. That opens up the chance for artists to sell directly (because their fans have found out about them without going through the industry). Most indie artists who have put logical thought into the matter are pro-file sharing. Even some of the smarter major label owned artists are pro-sharing. The only ones that seem to be against it are the music industry puppet acts whose goal is to sell albums and make the industry money.
