drilling
I wonder if this could be caused by drilling. There have been cases of volcanic activity triggered by drilling. Of the top of my head, I remember that the Air Force got caught pumping waste chemical weapons into the subsurface under Rock Flats, CO without a permit. They were detected by the increase in earthquakes. Couple that with George Bush's legislation to allow drilling in preserved areas, that Republican mantra of Drill Baby Drill may not have been so smart after all...

Re:I think you miss the point of the discussion.
Then your teacher was a douche and in the wrong.
Yea she was wrong but many others like Dominionists and Reconstructionists would do a lot more, such as stoning. There are plenty of Christian Talibans who would do the same right here in the US. These are the same people who want ID taught in schools as a science.

Re:CIA?
I found this:
http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t34949.html
Would an intelligence agency want to control a site where its users are encouraged to divulge a laundry list of dirt that can later be used to track/blackmail/embarrass when said users are older, wiser and more useful/dangerous. Do they have the money and the motivation?
Standard Disclaimer: Of course, only a whackjob conspiracy theorist would think that an Intelligence Agency with a large budget might, you know, actually collect intelligence, and furthermore, do it surreptitiously. That's crazy talk! -
+10 mods for the same goddam thingThank you. It's painful to read 'well, don't use the internet' 400 times. I can't believe this guy has gotten modded up over 10 times for saying the same fucking thing.
And guess what 'MankyD'? You would have earned no call-out from me if
/. didn't have a feature where I can see the last 24 of your posts, all of which say the same thing.Which may just prove the point at long last. Having a list of your seven posts all in one spot made it truly easy for me to become annoyed with you, whereas if that feature did not exist, you could've gone to bed thinking you were right, as chances are good I wouldn't have gone to the trouble of 'investigating'.
Of course, you could have NOT PUT THE INFORMATION ON A PUBLIC WEBSITE too.
sigh.
All the privacy concerns are all probably moot anyway.

Yeah its in the Privacy PolicyFrom The Facebook Privacy Policy
We may be required to disclose user information pursuant to lawful requests, such as subpoenas or court orders, or in compliance with applicable laws. We do not reveal information until we have a good faith belief that an information request by law enforcement or private litigants meets applicable legal standards. Additionally, we may share account or other information when we believe it is necessary to comply with law, to protect our interests or property, to prevent fraud or other illegal activity perpetrated through the Facebook service or using the Facebook name, or to prevent imminent bodily harm. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.
On the one hand, it is easy to say faceboook was just obeying the law and it is the patriot act that is flawed. On the other hand, facebook seems to have noo qualms about this sort of stuff. There are Conspiracy Theories claiming that Facebook's initial funding was from DOD connected venture capital, and that it is a remenant of Total Information Awareness.
Facebook links to eTrust from their privacy policy. Would it be effective if all of slashdot lodged complaints using the eTrust form? https://www.truste.org/pvr.php?page=complaint

Re:where does it end
Perhaps you should look at this from another angle. All these students posting detailed information about themselves on Facebook, including favorite books, movies, etc. are actually doing the leg work for the government. The way things are now and the way they're progressing, they won't have to tap your phones, read your mail and send agents to track you and take photographs. They can simply log on to Facebook and MySpace to find out everything they need to know. There's enough information to build a comprehensive profile of who you are (including political beliefs) as well as the people you associate with.
If you have a true concern about the direction of our government and the erosion of our rights, you should support educating people about the dangers of providing detailed personal information on social networking sites.
If you want to get a little more conspiratorial, please read http://www.commongroundcommonsense.org/forums/lofi version/index.php/t34949.html and http://jacobmorse.blogspot.com/2005/12/what-would- orwell-do.html. It appears that parties involved in funding Facebook have ties to the same elements you claim are behind the erosion of our rights.
You need to look at this issue in a deeper manner. These social networks could very well be trojan horses. Politicians will create the impression that they're against these sites knowing full well that there will be a backlash to protect them. This is exactly what they want. The anti-establishment has always been funded and supported by the establishment for its own gains.
