    The quote is referring to Quake 4. So they already can raytrace a semi-modern game at 90 FPS, and they have a graph that very clearly shows raytracing at a performance advantage as complexity increases. Just look at the damn graph (page three),

    And what they are going to get is this

    And, they should just be happy with this (which, is pretty awesome)

    My point is that real time photorealistic rendering will never catch up with what people expect from their games. It will always be behind. If all you want is mirrors, then find a faster way to implement them at the expense of a bit of quality.

    Yeah.
    • You strafe around corners.
    • You grab the last piece of pizza before someone else and you yell "Denied!"
    • You are puzzled because when somebody talks, a chat icon does not appear over their head.
    • You almost drowned because you tried swimming while wearing 100 pounds of armor.
    • You refer to life-after-death as respawning.
    • You have a bumper sticker that says "You can have my Rocket Launcher and Quad Damage when they fall off of my cold dead body."

    I did read the article -- it implies that while they've been 'approached', they've never done it.


    I did a little googling and found an article [www.computergames.ro] that backs up my admittedly hazy memory.
