Re:Sad state of affairs
Hmmm... perhaps everyone (I wish we had one up here in Canada) should listen to, support, and lobby for Ralph Nader.
Too bad he was excluded (essentially) from the last election, and labelled a spoiler of the see the nader factorDemocrats (it boggles my mind how a comment supporting democracy can deam a third choice to be antidemocratic)

Chomsky and Herman would disagree.....
Read practically any *political* book by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman, and you'll soon come to the realization of the futility of your proposal (for a taste from _Manufacturing Consent_, go here.) Only ideological material that fits within the agenda of the given elite will get full play in the media--which is, of course, NOT free, but wholly owned by increasingly fewer groups of people whose interests coincide less and less with those of "the People"; that is why, surprise, surprise, this case is muted, if not completely unknown, because it challenges the tenets of issues the DMCA camp wants kept quiet.
Sadly, writing to your editor solves nothing more than venting your spleen *here* does--actually, probably far less, as at least SOME people beyond the Gatekeepers see your opinions here, whereas at the Times and Post the most likely recipient of your words is the Round File.
No, if you want to support Dimitry, send him and his lawyers money. If you want to stop the DMCA--and other repressive measures taken by the Elite, be prepared to help those on the front lines with your wallet. In this unjust society, money is the only force that can buy Justice. -
Re:Ok, so here's a solutionAs for Norton and the like; we'll use Norton as an example. My Uncle, a computer whiz in his own right, used Norton Utils in the Windows 3.1 days - after he installed it he quickly learned that you can't just 'uninstall' it. He had to format the damn drive because of a faulty config file. Norton had stolen the system. So these guys are no better than MS - like what was said.
Because we can't see what Windows does or how it works in ANY way - you can't do much with it. You gotta buy crappy shareware or high priced ware to get it to do anything you want [in fact things you should be able to do].
Software houses like Norton just cash in when a new windows version comes out. I bet if you look at the income right after '95 came out you'll see a quick jump - I'm sure of it.
But when it comes to bundled apps - MS only will bundle apps that will help them in their other plans. It's not about innovation, it's not about function-ability, it's about what they are going to push in six months. Windows should be free - it's only to push the other crap they come up with.
It is criminal - and I for one say a class action lawsuit should be filed or something. They want to control every facet of you computing experience. Fuck 'em if I want to encode in a certain file format. Fuck 'em if I don't want to use their damn programs/office software. Fuck 'em in general.
Give us our computers back. I'm not going to claim 'free the data' or any such thing. I'm not going to ask them for their source code - but god damn, get off my wallet.
It's sad I need a shareware app [although I did find a freeware app eventually] to keep the memory clear, and bring the computer back from crawling. I've not rebooted linux ever 'just because it needed it'. So they can take that Linux Myths page down.
FUCK MICROSOFT! Doesn't Bill Gates' name equal 666 in ascii anyways?
