Really seriously
Really seriously :
Environmentally-conscious European companies are actually replacing plastic packaging material (expanded polystyrene foam peanuts) with biodegradable packaging material such as corn starch packing peanuts - basically unflavored corn puffs.
(Examples of shops: Conrad, Lush, etc.)So yeah, plastic and corn puffs *ARE* mutually interchangeable indeed

Re:Related projects
Well, I've got one of these plugged into my Samsung Galaxy Note 2:
http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/101316/Voltcraft-CO-20-USB-Air-Quality-Sensor
I wrote some USB host code to read the stick, and send alarms with MQTT to an IBM Intelligent Operations Center.
Maybe I need to move to China, or something.

Re:*my* iPhone??
Well, there's more here: http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/datenblaetter/100000-124999/101316-in-01-de-VOLTCRAFT_CO20_USB_LUFTQUALITAETSFUEHLER.pdf
How's your German? Otherwise . . . ask the almighty Google . . .
I have one hooked up to a mini-router, flashed with OpenWrt: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Portable-802-11n-Wireless-TL-MR3020/dp/B006DEBXD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357496964&sr=8-1&keywords=tp-link+mr3020
It sends messages with the MQTT protocol on to an IBM Intelligent Operations Center. I test it by blowing on it . . . to measure my bad breath(on topic) . . . or I just smoke a Cuban cigar . . . and I take it into meetings . . . when the LED turns red, the meeting has been going too long.
And I learned about the wonders of OpenWrt . . . on Slashdot . . .

Re:*my* iPhone??
Neither do I, but I'm interested in a usable 2,000 chemical sensor package for under $100.
Well, you could start with one of these: http://www.conrad.com/Voltcraft-CO-20-USB-Air-Quality-Sensor.htm?websale7=conrad-int&pi=101316
I'm about to start writing Android USB support for it, by coincidence. There's a googlable Linux driver with source available, too.

Re:Spot on.
Here you go. Page is in Dutch but it has a manual (PDF) in English on it.

NiMH batteries + a really good charger
Hi,
i use NiMH in various sizes, and a really good charger from conrad electronics which is microcontroller controlled, can rapid-charge even normal accus, and pumps an average of 125% of the nominal capacity into any cell... Ownage with 2000mAh AA cells... or 800mAh AAA cells. I almost have to throw away a dead remote long before the accus are flat...
Drawback: computerized recharger and NiMH cells are expensive.
bye,

Led Lenser V9 Micro-Lenser
I can recommend the Led-Lenser V9 Micro-Lenser because of its light-output per volume. It is the ideal keychain flashlight and can be ordered from Conrad Electronics for about 15 Euros or Dollars.
