Re:Help the poor- Plant a tree
For about a decade, I've envisioned the way to help the poor in countries that get deforested is to replant some of their forests with fruit trees. Even if farmers don't farm, or the country sees unrest, the fruit trees remain. A steady source of food is good in third world countries. Thankfully 'Food For The Poor' saw this too and there is a program for planting fruit trees that I try and endorse to people. If we have a good job, and are on our feet, we should be helping our fellow man, and this is a good way to do that.
What are the profits on this?

job creators? how about cancer creators?
And I'll point you at the Clean Air Act (1956). Because, you know, we realized things were wrong and did something about it.
And subsequent generations forgot that lesson, and are going to re-learn it the hard way. Silly asses.

Bill 2 remove fed crim penalties for marijuana!
Rock Slide, oh no, this news is so important it'll be remembered forever!
Why does Slashdot run stupid shit like this and spam shit from Ronald Pimplebottom but ignores cannabis news?
Too bad Slashdot didn't post the submission I made for this news item:
"Rep. Barney Frank -- shown here at a July 30 press conference with MPP's Rob Kampia -- has introduced a bill to remove federal criminal penalties for small marijuana violations. Take a minute to urge your member of Congress to support this commonsense bill now."
Now that's something worth passing! A lot of geeks smoke cannabis, I'm sure this news item would be interesting to a lot of geeks, but Slashdot passed on the news:

Roland Piquepaille stories == Want money stories
"... why is this story different?" Maybe it's not different.
Why is it that Roland Piquepaille stories always seem to include some place to send money? In this case the place is called the "American Friends of Tel Aviv University". Why only Americans? Why not Europeans, too, or anyone who has money?
Quote: "Your gift may help develop the computer science and engineering solutions that are the backbone of Israel's defense technology." As in 4 million Jews in Israel getting into gun battles with 1.3 billion Muslims?
If I think of ways that Jews can be peaceful, doesn't that make me more Jewish than those who think of ways to be violent? If I help Jews live in peace in the world, aren't I morally more a member of the Jewish tribe than those who think of ways for Jews to be adversarial? Even though I have no genetic, political, or religious connection to the Jewish culture, don't my caring ideas make me more truly Jewish than those who call themselves Jews, but whose minds are filled with violence? -
Re:Consumers UnionSo... in addition to voting for politicians who promise to do what I want, I now should pay to become an anonymous member of a large group that promises to do what I want, so that group can in turn bribe the politicians I already voted for?
You can visit their site and use their templates to send quite non-anonymous letters to remind the politicians you voted for to do what you want, completely free of charge or obligation to Consumer's Union. You don't even have to pay the $26/year to subscribe to their quite useful magazine.

Re:There's your answer:
The problem is that it's against the law in many STATES to forment revolution on the government.
Obviously you can challenge this in court by preemptively suing the government before you attempt the revolt. Might actually be effective, actually. This is probably something the ACLU or EFF would want to tackle. That's why I donate to them (ACLU, EFF, Impeach Bush).
Think about all the money you spend on Starbucks or Coke or organic vegtables or whatever it is you consume. I figure I spend $20 a week on starbucks. Surely I can afford $10/month to assure my personal freedoms. So I give $120 per year to each organization. I know there are plenty of other people on here (slashdot) who have also. If you haven't, just do it. It's fast, and don't be all paranoid about them having your credit card number... you can send cash ;) -

Wait! Don't switch yet! (A Porta-Hell Story)
I was off-contract with T-Mobile, and had experienced many bandwith problems with them. I'm near an interstate interchange-- traveling calls fill the entire tower. I noticed an amazing deal on a treo 600 on amazon, and decided to get it, knowing that I could port it to SprintPCS, where I have another cell phone, and much better service.
I initiated the transfer on Wed, 11/26. I had heard rumblings of portability problems with the wrong information being entered into the system, so I made sure "customer care" specialist repeated all of the information back to me. They gave me an original "due date" of Saturday, 11/30 at Noon.
Saturday rolled around and no transfer. I called back, and it turns out Sprint submitted the wrong address to the WLNP system. If the addresses don't match, it won't port. Nobody had called me in 3 days. To make matters worse, the address they submitted was my old address- 4 years and 3 addresses ago! It was my original address with Sprint, not even my current one they had on file!!
To cut a long story short, I've called Sprint 5 times since then, still no port 7 days later, and each time I call, they give me the wrong address issue, even though I've corrected it 6 times.
This most recent time, I waited 2 hours (on a landline) to speak to someone in the Sprint WLNP dept. They eventually got T-mobile on the line. Finally, they both agreed that it was the FCC-contracted third party that was the holdup, but that their system was in the middle of an "update" and was unaccessable for 2 hours. (In the middle of a business day?!!?)
This system is not working. If these companies had spent the time and effort making this work instead of fighting it, and maybe tested it at least once, it would work better.
But because there are so many parties involved, they figured they didn't have to, because there are 2 other people they can point the finger at.
I've yet to hear from a single AT&T person online who's successfully ported.
If you've having problems such as me, make sure to REPORT IT.
Other resources I've been using, mostly to comisserate:
Howard Forums
Sprintusers.com
Number portability forum
Wait until they get the kinks out-- the system should take but a few hours, not more than a week! -
