Re:AM radio!
I've never heard Chomsky or Mother Jones on the AM radio. I also wouldn't consider your examples "fringe".
Moveon is solidly pro-Democratic party, that's probably to the right of the American people. Democrats support corporate bailouts, drug wars, terror wars, etc. The American people do not.
Chomsky and Mother Jones might be a little to the left of the American mainstream, but would fit right with moderate European social democrats. I'd hardly call that fringe.
If you want to give examples of the radical left, check out crimethinc, bash back, or infoshop.org.

CrimethInc?
This has all the earmarks of a CrimethInc creation. I love those folks! Anarchist AND fun loving!

Re:Stupid Guns
In order for America to turn into a dictatorship, civil unrest must be quashed by those in power. The obvious agent to perform that would be the military. It would be quite easy for the military to corral an unarmed populace with tear gas and riot gear. It would be nearly impossible, though, to convince many service members to start shooting at armed citizens that look and speak just like them, in their own country. Soldiers/etc have a hard enough time dealing with killing dehumanized enemies in foreign countries. Orders to kill Joe the Plumber would result in a quick mutiny.
There is already an excellent example of the Ohio National Guard during the Vietnam War. Furthermore along the same lines, the entirety of COINTELPRO shows that law enforcement, and even soldiers have a vested interest and belief in the maintenance of the State. Dehumanizing your enemies occurs just as easily within your borders as without.
An excerpt from Why Fuck the Police (which, while focused on class war, has some legitimate points about violence by employees of the state.
"Criticism of opposition to the police usually falls into one of five categories. The first common argument is that the police, as our fellow workers, are also exploited members of the proletariat, and should therefore be our allies. Unfortunately, there is a vast gap between "should" and "is." The police exist to enforce the will of the powerful; anyone who has not had a bad experience with them is likely either privileged or submissive. Today's police officers, at least in North America, know exactly what they're getting into when they join the force; people in uniform don't just get cats out of trees in this country. Yes, most take the job because of what they feel to be economic necessity, but needing a paycheck is no excuse for obeying orders to evict families, harass young men of color, or pepper spray demonstrators; those whose consciences can be bought are everyone else's enemies, not potential allies."
A thorough reading of literature on class war in the early 1900s should show how easy it is for the state and capital to suppress legitimate objection and struggle.

Re:Radio Libre!
Even looking at the early Anarchists of the 19th century, Proudhon's Property is Theft! certainly upholds its title's point, but Proudhon also admits that private property is inherently anarchistic, saying "The absolute right of the State is in conflict with the absolute right of the property owner."
I love you guys, but come on. Anarchist, anarcho-capitalist, libertarian, crypto-eco-anarcho-socialist... who cares? Are they fighting for the power or against it? Your politics are boring as fuck. -
Even the new one?
Do I have to delete the new version? All I wanted to do was make a giant inflatable cthulhu, and the instructions on the giant inflatable bear were close.

Re:Not Flawed Legislation
Define "terrorist."
If I read Marx/Lenin/Trotsky, am I a terrorist?
If I read the Koran, am I a terrorist?
If I read Recipes for Disaster, am I a terrorist?
Where is the line drawn? How is it drawn? -
one website all comp sci majors should read
Especially if you're disillusioned after being a "loyal employee"

Re:Who and How?
Try Recipes for Disaster from the CrimethInc Ex-Workers' Collective instead. Sure, there's no information on making drugs, but for real-world situations from direct action to silkscreen and guerrilla performances to reclaiming the streets, it's more than a valuable tool.

Re:I Couldn't Agree More
I don't know. I'm as educated as the next guy. And, although I may be biased (as I wrote for radio and TV at one point in my life), some TV is really good.
Take, Twin Peaks, Trailer Park Boys, Rescue Me, Six Feet Under, for example.
I wouldn't let my children watch TV unattended, sure -- not because I'm a prude, but because it's mostly brainwashing.
The things they say in Days of war, nights of love is true. But you miss the point of the critique entirely when you ban the medium per se. -

CrimethInc: Publicity Stunt To Sell Records
CrimethInc is an organisation, of which the person who spoke at Defcon is likely a member. It's a collective of self-styled 'subversives' and 'revolutionaries' who mount publicity stunts like this in order to sell music through their record label.
Most left-wingers who are familiar with them (myself included) disown them as poseurs. -
Re:CrimethInc
Thoughtful analysis? I have read their paper (harbringer) a few times, talked to members. Just look at their start page 'Ex-Workers' Collective"...or for instance this article which just reeks of an adolescent understanding of how a society functions.
Not to mention it is written is offensively sophmoric pseudo-19th century philosophical-ese, with logical contradictions made in almost every paragraph.
No. CrimethInc and the subculture it spawned from smacks of spoiled brat with lack of purpose. None of it is 'pretty great' and there is more insightful social analysis in the first page of the New York Times and Wall Street journal than the Harbringer could ever dream of approaching. And thats accounting for the strong moderate leanings of the NYT, and right wing capitalist leanings of the WSJ. -
Re:CrimethInc
it is strange that this guy would use the name of an organization as his own personal identity, but i just wanted to chime in that the actual organization CrimethInc. is actually pretty great and provides some thoughtful analysis of the modern world despite what some are saying here (who would have thought--uniformed general appraisals on
/.). -

Re:Not to be cruel, but...
well, being someone who has been homeless (by choice) i say that there is nothing that this system can offer that the internet hasn't provided. most good shelters (and some drop in centers) have internet access and otherwise there is the library. being homeless for me was about freedom. i put a few years of volunteer work into the shelters before becoming a client (now i work with food not bombs).
everyone is there for a different reason. some are crazy, some are handicapped and can't work, some have drug addictions, and some (like myself) don't see the point of working so hard to make money for your boss so he can throw you a few crumbs so you can pay rent and make car payments and eat expensive food and drink in an attempt to make up for the time you lost while working for that life. your paycheck isn't worth the time you loose.
i hate these kids!? -
Re:The basic point of this bill...
Clueless? No, the problem is well understood. It has nothing to do with video games and it has nothing to do with ignorance. It's gutlessness on one hand and wishful thinking on the other.
No, the system is horribly flawed.
Of course, there is hope. -

Makes me glad....
This makes me glad I ordered a whole slew of phone tap warning stickers from CrimeThinc. I can't wait for them to arrive. Maybe it can help make a difference against the evil Patriot Act.
