Re:The terrorists aren't even trying hard.
I think the reason you haven't seen things like this happen is because the consequences are too awful to contemplate, even for the terrorists. A couple of stunts like that would have us on the brink of turning the entire middle east into a glass parking lot. It's tough to be a big shot world terrorist leader getting zillions of headlines when everything is a smoking radioactive crater. If you think the U.S. military is on a jag now you probably couldn't imagine what would happen in response to attacks like that.
A couple of attacks like you suggest and the the term "lose its shit" would be too mild to describe the response. Seriously.
This story comes to mind: http://www.dansimmons.com/news/message/2006_04.htm

Ilium and Olympus by Dan Simmons.
Loved it. Not as good as the Hyperion cantos but then again what is? -
Consensus is propaganda is consensus is propaganda
The consensus is that this is a failed mission (as the world warned the US it would be) and they have to live with that.
Reality is not subject to consensus.
I am sure more than one philosopher has written about this at length. Doxa vs. episteme etc.
Anyone who thinks the Game (I call it "The Second Great Game" to put its proper historical perspective) is over when we have Persia in a pincer between Bactria and Babylonia, what a lightweight twit to be so blown about by public opinion, so ignorant of history... well I am hoping that reality is far more textured and profound than any consensus!
Consensus is doxa, hearsay, trivia, rumor, crap. Even legend and outright myth have more truth than does public opinion.
If we do lose this, well I am sure more than one good author has written at length about that scenario, that desire of public opinion that fart of a million asses:

Dear IdiotWhen you cross an international border, the country you are entering can search your person, papers, and effects for contraband.
When communications (papers) cross an international border, the same rules apply.
For instance, Germany forbids import of Holocaust Denial literature, by foot or by phone.
Dan Simmons completely nails little whiny shits like you in his Time Traveller essay.
Personally, I hope President Bush avoids the future predicted by Simmons by jailing the traitors. Yeah, like that's gonna happen.

Re:Ten Novels I'd Rather See Made Into Movies
Hyperion has been in movie-territory for awhile now. Leonardio DiCaprio had reportedly shown interest and isn't officially attached according to Dan Simmon's page, but Dan does mention a 'top-flight movie star'.
However, I have heard about this for at least 2 years now, and screenplays do sit on shelves for years in some cases.

Dan Simmons
For those of you who haven't read Dan Simmons' Hyperion cantos I can't recommend it highly enough...
one of those books (and then series) that actually deserves all the awards/praise heaped on it.

Book suggestion
Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Or the whole series if you have the time. This guy pulls out everything from Canturbury Tales to cyberfreakiness in this work. Definitely a well-rounded read and incredibly absorbing. If you enjoyed any of the books you mentioned then you should like the Hyperion Cantos.

Ahhh...it sounds ok
But what I'm really waiting for is a movie adaptation of Dan Simmon's Endymion series .
