    How about a USB extension lead and mount the whole device in the can?

    I've done exactly this to yagi antennas to eliminate transmission line loss. The result is a thin USB wifi wand:

    Apparently, this kind of crash is recoverable, but I wouldn't feel good about it happening.

    I prefer to use free software tools as they are more configurable and are designed to be integreated within your operating system in the most configurable ways. The smartmontools gives your SCSI and IDE drive a complete report of performance and errors logged since it was new. This utility may be run as a daemon in your crontab to mail out errors or change the terror alert color to orange when things go south. Not having a report card for your drives is bad karma.

    I have always used my laptop on a plane. Airport security sometimes swabs it with a chemical like its a block of crack or something. But no one has a problem with it like I was talking into an annoying cellphone.
