Re:And?
Well, it's CGI+JavaScript, but there is a browser (click Browser Emulator) that works under any JavaScript-supporting browser
;-)
Pick a browser, any browser. IE and the Line-mode browser are especially fun ;-) -
Feel the Original: Dejavu Emulator
For the youngins, you can use a Netscape emulator (and Mosaic and early IE) to feel what it was like. It's fun to see what sites do and see if they even load.
I'm probably
/.'ing it with this, but it does say "Sorry, due to heavy load on the server, browsing is quite slow. On the positive side, it makes the experience even more authentic.."I especially love "You probably forgot the "http://" part. Remember: the old browsers did not provide that service... Give it another try!" when you enter a URL without the http:// component.

Take a look at this

Emulate old browsers...
...at dejavu.org. They've got seven to choose from. Pretty cool.

You missed the anniversary.Well, that was beta
.10 version of Mosaic... The followup release to .9. Ie, they didn't believe in zero-padding.So, technically, it's the 10th anniversary of the 10th (theoretically, anyhow) release. Woo!
From a month earlier, Andreessen posts to USENET:
Comments and suggestions on X Mosaic's capabilities and interface would be very much appreciated. We are releasing new versions about every 7-14 days, so your feedback has an excellent chance of directly influencing near-term development. (Support for handling GIF, JPEG, MPEG, audio, DVI, and PostScript will be in the next version, so don't suggest that.

Re:Local Copies?
Ahhh..... Nuts.....
The site was slashdotted and I was confusing it with DejaVu
Move along... -
Re:Netscape 0.9 (Browser Emulation)
The site you are refering to is Deja Vu (www.dejavu.org)

Re:JonKatzIt's because people like myself bitch every time the Katz filter gets circumvented and troll the article incessantly. Yes, I had the Katz filter on, but by coincidence I paid a visit to
/. using the browser emulators at http://www.dejavu.org (which naturally don't use my browser cookies) and stumbled upon the article.Oh shit, now I've probably
/.'ed it...

Into 2kLooking at the milestone, they are now saying that M18 is the last release using the Mx naming conventions adn now they are going with Mozilla 1.x or startting at
.9. Well this looks like history repeating itself. If you look at Netscape they actually started with .9 as a browser and then moved to 1.x and so on. If history repeats itself Mozilla will ahve to wait about 2 years before Mozilla 2 or 3 get out and it has a viable (supportable) user base. By then kfm or the Konqueror will be out in 2.x or 3.x fashion with full flash, JavaScript and Java support and people will have UNIX users will have moved to another browser. I know that Konquere is looking better and better and am waiting for kde2.0.I wonder when Netscape 6.0 will actually be released and how stable it will be. I also wonder how the themes contest is going. No updates of that mentioned on slashdot.
And the winner is???
Here is agood browser timeline.http://www.dejavu.org/ I know it may be old for some but it was rather interesting to get to try these out
;-)
I don't want a lot, I just want it all!
Flame away, I have a hose! -
Re:Other similar things
And things like Delorie Lynx Viewer, Delorie Web Page Purifier, HTML PrettyPrinter, Delories Search Engine Simulator for starters - oh, don't forget last weeks Slashdotted site DejaVu for viewing sites in 'old browsers'.

The more things change...
It uses a TV instead of a monitor
Well, this may just be me, or it may be because of the 'nostalgia' stories that ./ seems to have been running lately (the one about dejavu.org and the recent one on old video games come to mind) but for some reason this reminded me of something...
So then, who all remembers the days when computers with TV's instead of monitors were the standard instead of something special (Of course you do...)
Now... who still has their old computer like that somewhere? Come on, come on, admit it...
There, that's better, I knew I wasn't the only one...

Re:Oh my..
It works if you go to the main page and in from there: http://www.dejavu.org/emulator.htm. Now this does bring back memories, what ever happened to being able to carry around a copy of netscape on one mac floppy disk anyway? (yes, I was forced to use a mac at uni - I am better now)
