Pulsed-power. coin shrinkers are an easy solution. Just use the coil around the HDD instead of a coin. I generally just use a grinding wheel. It's hard to read platters once they are dust.

Discharging a capacitor, requires energy. In every capacitor there is an electric field and changing this field from its full value to zero will lead to motion in the dielectrics over which the field passes.Actually if you do it too fast, your capacitor will certainly explode.
I can see that, but I do have a question: why is it harder to discharge the capacitor quickly than it is to charge it quickly? It's already known these capacitors can (or are claimed to be able to) charge that quickly, which is still a huge amount of energy being transferred in a short period of time, so if they can pull off doing it in one direction, why not in the other? Or is there something especially hard about discharging that doesn't apply to charging?
Also, if it's really difficult to discharge a big (i.e. high capacitance) capacitor really quickly, how come this guy doesn't seem to have problems doing it using capacitors from these guys?

Projectile distortion?
What happens to the projectiles in these things? Such a gauss density I would assume, beyond simply the accelleration of the projectile has to be considerable. The coin shrinker is only 1600-2500 J
Assuming 2500 J in a space of 3 mm does to an object the size of a quarter, 8 mega Joules would have an equivilent magnetic density spread over a gun 96 metres in length. Or me math is fscked...

or on the phone for that matter. You guys partially busted that, but I feel that the energy source that you guys used did not have the voltage or amperage that real lightning packs. What about using a Quarter Shrinker to get the genuine results? The gadget pushes over 100K Amps @ 15K Volts @ 6,500 Joules, can reshape any metallic object that you wind in a copper coil. IMHO, that is as close as you can get to the genuine article.

I actually read TFA, saw something about implosions caused by high currents, and an old neuron fired.
