I've probably spent over $1000 on various FreeBSD and Linux distro CD's and other various things like shirts, hats, towels (huh?), stuffed animals and such. All to help pay the bills for the great folk that are writing this stuff. I sure as hell can't write it, so I figure I'll throw a few bucks around to help. I'm pretty sure that the people hacking this stuff i.really/i appreciate it. How 'bout more of you join me?

Re:Great Summary
bmajik said, "XP is monumental in that it brings SMP, JFS, firewalling, NAT, etc etc". Check your own stupid meter, bmajik. XP is doing NOTHING innovative. NT has had SMP support forever, BeOS, AIX, IRIX, HP-UX and others all have had JFS since you were drooling baby puke, and firewalling and NAT are common on *nix boxen. How exactly is all of this innovation? By simply shoving it into the same box as the OS? Microsoft has basically never created anything new, at least not anything I'm aware of.

Loser Corporations
I've been a pretty loyal Adobe product user for years now. Photoshop and Illustrator are two of the main apps I use all the time. These tactics really make me want to puke. Does anybody know how much Killustrator costs to buy? Does "ZERO" come to mind? How the hell is this software (which is pretty decent, BTW) hurting Adobe, in any way, shape or form? Is there a version of Adobe Illustrator that runs on Linux? One of the main reasons I'm still running that M$ shit is because of this. Yes, I know I could run out and buy a Mac w/ OS X on it. Do you have an extra $3500 laying around?
I hereby declare a complete boycott of all Adobe products. Looks like I'll be getting more familiar with The Gimp after all.
Fuck You, Adobe. You where probably put up to this by that fag, Ballmer. Rot in hell.

Re:Sun Micro forced to make native jave for FreeBS
That's "threatens", not thretense. It's took me almost 20 seconds to figure out what you where talking about there. I'm not picking on you directly, I'm simply getting tired of people that attempt to contribute to the dialog (mutlilog?) and can't even come close to something like spelling correctly. Good spelling is a mark of intellectual involvement in a topic. On the other hand, I do agree that a C# implementation on FreeBSD would probably influence Sun a fair ways towards creating a native Java SDK and byte-code compiler.

Re:It's a great way to move to management.
Frankly, it sounds like the guy was trying all along to tell you the project was hosed from the beginning. I've worked on numerous projects that relied on proprietary software (IIS, NT) to work. I know for a fact I could have created the same end result, faster and more robust, with open source software than the other 15 or so developers I worked with combined. Look at your methodology. What is going to make you more money? Something that you have to pay for up front or something you don't have to pay for at all? This is one of my pet peeves, managers that think the end deliverable can only be based on MS (or other...) products and the client will only buy such. BULLSHIT! If you support your product, who cares what it's based on? Only the VP's and higher, who Ms markets to, knowing full well that us techies think it's crap (most of us anyway). Please look closer at open source software and listen to your geeks, we know what we're talking about.

Re:Prediction
Pretty soon we'll have some sort of rebel ICANN challenging the original
Frankly, I look forward to something like that. To date, ICANN has been nothing more than a closed organization, making decisions that directly effect all internet users, without listening to the community. I say disband the ICANN and form a new committee, based on an IRC like forum. Consensus could be pretty easliy found in such a manner and the overall good of the community would occur.

We (I grew up and still live here in Wisconsin and consider the Packers to be God's own team) might have the smallest stadium, and middlin' revenue, but the Pack is still one of the most successful teams ever. You certainly can't say that about a team located just a little bit west of us... As for the Mandrake stock thing, hell yes! I _really_ like the distro and want to see them continue. It seems to me that nobody really knonws that Triumph is back, with some very kickass bikes. I own a 2000 Speed Triple. No, I can't go 200mph. So what? Breaking 160mph on an un-faired bike is one hell of a lotta fun. The 2001 600 and the Daytona are tops in their respective classes. The major magazines just don't recognize this, I suspect because they're owned by the Big 3.

Re:CD-R's *and* gas? What are we going to do?
Time to be the old, weird guy.
I remember, dimly, when gas was as low as 16 cents per gallon, with the average cost around 24 cents. My dad spazzed out when we went to northern Wisconsin (I grew up in La Crosse, WI.) in 1974/5 and gas was an astonishing 48 cents per gallon!! I was paying 35 cents per gallon when I was 19, wayyyyyy back in 1979. The first gas crunch hit us, when, 1983? We really need to get off our collective asses and find a decent alternative to gasoline. Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions.
When I started buying CD-R media, it was around $5 to $6 per disc. I'm still going to go and buy a couple of hundred at current prices though.

Re:DSL Requiem
Whoops! I spoke to soon. I finally got through to Ameritech. I'm ordering a 768/128 w/ 5 IP DSL connection from them. Damn good price too. $74.00 per month. FSCK cable. I was told that I'd be hooked up in 2 weeks. Now, was it a black goat I sacrifice? Oh, wait, that's for SCSI. Anyone know what the DSL gods want for a sacrifice?

DSL Requiem
My DSL provider, @link Networks, just went belly up. I have(had) SDSL 512k/512k and 32 IP addresses. All for $159.00/month. My service basically never went down. The people at Nortel Networks are, from what I can garner from various sources, in complete control of @link. Just this morning I subscribed to Charter Cable for 384k/128k with 5 IP addresses. The price? $159.00/month. It totally sucks that I have to degrade my service in order to pay the same price, but, that's life in America these days.

Re:Techsupport: Is it worth the while?
What's really annoying is having to call M$ tech support a lot of times. Like when I worked as a network engineer/consultant, I would usually have to call M$ 1 to 4 times a week. Yes, I knew 90% of the answers or fixes, but when NT4 starts getting pissy and you have absolutely no idea why, you gotta deal with them. At least getting the MSDN stuff helped. But, for gods sake, try getting a straight answer out of M$ tech support. YIKES!

Re:Does PBS have a liberal bias?
PBS is to liberalism as Rush Limbaugh is to conservatism. Being basically conservative myself, if I do watch any PBS, most of the time I'm laughing at the lack of objectivism or screaming at it. Great Joke
I thought that the joke is close to a disater/tragedy classic. Who the hell uses Mastercard anyway? I get so many offers for "pre-approved" credit cards it's silly. To all credit card marketeers out there: get a grip, I really don't need $4,000,000 dollars worth of credit cards. One is enough. The balance? Maybe $200. The limit? $10,000. That's enough to buy a few toys with, but I prefer to save. Think about it. I saw an article today about how our economy might be getting hurt by all the credit cards out there and the ways that people misuse them. Whatever happened to the day when a person saved up for something?

Re:Why this won't work
"Maybe you don't trust them, but get a reality check.. the vast majority of people trust Microsoft and Bill Gates implicitly"
I was, in essence, forced to leave my last job, as a network engineer, simply because I was vocal about my distrust and loathing of Microsoft products, specifically servers. There were other mitigating factors, like being setup by a co-worker, but in the main, I was not liked by upper management because I told them they were wasting money buying all these damn licenses and additional hardware, when they didn't need to. I also PROVED to them, in a testbed, that M$ products were unreliable. I was told, by a Director and a VP, "Quit bashing Microsoft, we chose to use it, now make it work.". Of course, they chose M$ without even looking at other approaches. The whole point I'm trying to get at is, management has been brain-washed by M$'s market droids to the point that you can't change their minds! If these well-educated, supposedly intelligent people can get pulled in by the hype-meisters, does the general public really stand a chance?

Re:Dead Whales
Just curious here. What do you have against Netware? What version? I just finished a network OS upgrade research project and came up with Netware 5.x as the winner over Linux (yes, go ahead and flame me) and Win2K. This was a small shop that already had a Netware box, um, a 3.11 box. I've ran Netware 4.x on a 3000+ user netwrok with over 75 WAN connections also. I rather like it for file/print and user auth. Certainly not for apps though.

Gimme!!
Ech, I had to wipe the drool off my keyboard. Now, what was I going to say? Oh yea. Getting actual ethernet to the house would not be much different than DSL or cable. Faster and cheaper, probably, but realistically what do you get? A connection to a network and an IP address(es). The speed capability of Ethernet though. 100mbs Internet connection. Cheap hosting solutions. Anyone hear about pricing?

Re:A sad day
Actually, I dispute that. Look at the old Tom and Jerry cartoon. The ones from the 40's and 50's. In my opinion, most of the T&J's of that era where the finest cartoons ever made. I don't know that most of the names, but the one where Tom goes fishing in this insanely beautiful pond, using Jerry as bait, has got to be one of the best cartoons ever made.

Basically, anybody with a pulse can use AOL. My 14 year old daughter refuses to use it anymore, stating "All it's good for is chatting and I can get that for free everywhere else! I think AOL is for people that are to stupid to understand how to surf the real internet.". Smart kid... Anyway, I think it's pretty cool that they chose Linux for the base OS. Does this mean we're about to get bombarded with AOL for Linux CD's, offering 5,000,000 hours (useable only in the first month, of course)?
