Apple replaced my TiBook after 4-5 visits.........for flaking paint (delamination), heat issues, etc...
I was able to force the issue by going public with my Apple experience
I eventually received a full replacement, apology and a new, speed-bumped unit that's been extremely-stable since.See the various stages of repair below....

Re:Paint Issues (was:powerbooks)Asshole.... Don't discount the paint issues that the parent is talking about. I was one of the people that really pushed Apple to replace my defective unit. The paint problems were indicators of other manufacturing defects.... excessive heat, poor paint prep, etc.
Take a look at my documented repairs:
My first unit before shipping to Apple.
My Powerbook after the first repair.
My Powerbook after the 4th trip. Apple replaced the unit after this. Now, just because you may not have encountered these issues, doesn't mean that other people aren't affected.... I went through having to send my Powerbook to Apple FIVE times over the course of 8 months to get my issues resolved.... (they gave me a newer, faster Powerbook and a NDA agreement). That's fucked-up.

Re:Yeah rightFinal Scratch or a Denon or Pioneer DJ-oriented CD deck would be much better additions to a traditional setup than this toy. Again, this particular product is an example of how corporations are capitalizing on the popularity of DJ culture. It's a shame because it's flooding the market with less-talented, less-experienced DJs.....
-
Re:Even better productI actually get annoyed when I mix with DJs that use Final Scratch. While it's a good idea and well-executed, it's a hassle for the traveling/gigging DJ. Here in the Chicago scene, it's difficult to obtain access to AC power (for your laptop) and inputs into the mixer for the Final Scratch USB unit. Most of these clubs are permanent installations, and this becomes an issue when you have several DJs in the lineup for the night.
I own a Denon DN-S5000 CD unit in addition to my Technics. That's a way to incorporate new technology into your sets. Final Scratch is nice, but doesn't offer the flexibility that a Pioneer or Denon CD deck would allow.
-
Re:Not even closeHeh... I was slow to adopt the CD thing. I've been mixing for 10 years, but just recently purchased a Denon DN-S5000 CD deck to go with the turntables. See the studio.
This is just the corporate world capitalizing on the popularity of DJ culture. It's a shame, because it simply cheapens it....
-
Re:Huh ?Maybe DJ Skribble? I'm not sure where the scratching/turntablist obsession came from. I cringe when people find out that I'm a DJ and make the "wikki-wikki" sound while scratch-gesturing with their hand....
I'm a House DJ though, so it's not as big of a deal in my genre....

Re:Yeah rightYou're right. This is trash. It's a shame that DJing has become cheapened by flood of consumer "DJ toys". This is as bad as the DM2 mixer... I'll stick with my Technics...

Question:
Would that be the same "good solid engineering" that produced the extremely overpriced TiBook, which had trouble with airport range due to the materials it was built with, the same engineering that flaking body paint?..
Would that be the same engineering that allows for body and hinge fractures?
Wow, thats some damn good engineering! -
Anything with Eric Dolphy......If you dig avant garde jazz, check out Eric Dolphy. For most jazz-heads, even mentioning Dolphy's post-bebop era work is a sure way to gain respect. Dolphy was the master of the bass clarinet, flute and alto saxophone. He was a sideman in a number of late 50's groups and emerged as a soloist in the 60's.
Hit up google and check online samples.

My two solutions: DataComet and Eterm....[+]I run Fink and XDarwin on my Powerbook. My company produces a terminal/character-based ERP application for the produce industry. It runs on hardware terminals and also has a home-brewed PC client (with a Linux backend). We use a SCO-ANSI emulation with a few custom termdefs.
There are very few clients (puTTY and Powerterm) on the PC that can handle our product. The Mac situation is much worse. It took me a few months to find an appropriate solution for working with our clients from my Mac. The winners are:
Eterm -free- Get version 0.9 through Fink. It's much faster than Apple's terminal application and is much more configurable.
Here's a shot of a typical Eterm on my machineDataComet -not free- but worth it. This program is similar to Powerterm on the PC side. It can handle just about any emulation you throw at it. Powerterm and DataComet both include their own font suites which allow for full PC-ANSI emulation, for example. Very comprehensive package. It integrates with the built-in shell and even handles my company's software.
Here's a screenshot of DataComet on my systemNote: There is a Powerterm for Mac OSX, but it's fairly expensive, and DataComet performs as well. Hit me up if you have any questions....

The ONLY problem is the paint issue......which has supposedly been fixed in this revision... But Powerbooks manufactured before this latest revision can suffer from the infamous paint chipping/cracking/flaking problem.
After 8 months of complaining, Apple *did* replace my defective unit, but I fear that this new machine will delevop the same problem. Functionally, these are wonderful machines.... especially for the tech-savvy crowd.
My obligatory screenshot link.

What about existing Fink Installations?
How will this affect those of us with existing XFree86 and Fink applications? I currently use Gnome and Gtk for my X applications... is this an entirely-standalone product, or could it possibly integrate well with an existing Gtk install?

I share a name with a famous gay author..........who's from the same town as me....
A "Googling" of "Edmund White Evanston" yields mixed results.
Edmund White, not to be confused with me; Edmund William White, is originally from Evanston, Illinois.
He's an older white man. I'm the opposite.
He's known for works like, Once a Sodomite, Twice a Philosopher and other queer-studies materials. I'm a house DJ.
These are fairly strong differences, but I've had more than a few employers confuse me with him. In one case, I walked into an empty interview room to find this on the interviewer's monitor. He was quite shocked to see that I wasn't what/who he was expecting. I've had other potential employers respond with, "You're too old" or "How's your writing career," etc. It's a good ice-breaker, though.

I booted into OS 9 today.....after about 11 months of using OS X.x exclusively. I've grown used to multitasking abilty of OS X, but in OS 9, the GUI never felt sluggish; regardless of hardware. At the same time, I found myself growing impatient while the foreground applicaiton (Digidesign Protools) in OS 9 prevented me from doing anything else on the system. In the end, I think OS X.2 (Jaguar) performs very well on my Powerbook 667. As others have said, the GUI performance is very solid under Jaguar, whereas the older versions of OS X suffered a bit.
There are a few things that I do to enhance my OS X experience. I work in Linux systems deployment for a software firm, and spend mucho time at the command line. I *do* think that the Apple Terminal application is a bit slow, so I use Eterm under XDarwin/Gnome for my terminal needs. My other suggestion is installing Launchbar. This program makes every command/application/document/etc. available by typing a few characters. It's highly configurable and allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard for just about every task.
These tools, plus the multitasking ability (versus OS 9's inability) allow me to be more efficient on OS X. Speed doesn't really matter as much, since I can still get my work done.
Oh, and here's a nifty screenshot that illustrates that productivity

Will the Titanium PowerbookG4's paint fall off???I mean, I feel like I've been burned. My Powerbook G4 667/DVD purchased eactly one year ago has been in to Apple for repair FIVE times, and is still demonstrating problems. These are the common ones that are starting to affect current users. The paint delamination (and here) required three trips to the repair center.... it's beginning to surface again! I've had excessive heat issues (also see here) which also required replacement of the motherboard, heatsink and fan (three times) and the external casing. Methinks that the heat was a factor in the paint failure. There's also a VERY informative post on the paint issue on the Apple Discussion Boards.
To the best of my knowledge, Apple didn't change anything in the paint process for this ew crop of Powerbooks. Now that the well-documented problem is surfacing on the last revision of Titanium G4, I'm a bit wary about these new models.

I'm an independent House DJ........and I've been selling my house mix CD's for over two years on eBay to VERY favorable reviews. I mix these live at home, or record live sets from my club gigs. I duplicate using CD-R's, since most duplication houses won't press REAL CD's in quantities of less than 1000 units.
I've never had an issue with eBay throughout all of this. I don't state explicitly in the auction listings that these are CD-R's. That's unnecessary information. It's all about the content at that point. I think their violation-detection process is poor. I've had auctions forcefully cancelled for using words like "ass" (as in "Funky-ass house mix CD") or using the real titles of some of the raunchier tracks I play. It happens, though.
If y'all want to hear some good house music, hit up my website.
