Dofus
I've been playing a French MMORPG, Dofus, for ages.
It's quite different from other MMORPGS, as it's turn-based and the graphics are 2D. It's a bit like an MMO version of FF Tactics, though the world and lore are vastly different. It's grindy, but has a nice sense of humour and a tonne of content.

You mean, like dofus? http://www.dofus.com/

Check out Dofus
Funny name notwithstanding, it's a pretty cool little MMORPG that's done entirely in flash.
It has free to play and pay to play modes.

Dofus
Dofus is a French / English tactical MMORPG, it's build with Flash so it works in any browser (or standalone on Windows/Mac). Dofus is not totally free (as in beer), but there is an area on the map where you can play for free. It's a very funny game. There are jokes everywhere (in the items, quests, weapons, spells etc) If you don't want to pay for a game you better not try this one out. Because you'll get addicted and before you know it, you'll pay the monthly fee!

Not for everyone...
... but I like it.

Slick 2D art and timed, turn-based, tactical combat - vaguely reminiscent of a simplistic X-Com meets Studio Ghibli. -
Re:But what are they wanting? There's already an MMO strategy RPG that just came out of open beta a few weeks ago, I believe. I played some of it in open beta and it's a little like FF-tactics with a pretty bad French to English translation. However, it's still playable and I would have enjoyed it more if the battles weren't so slow due to players forgetting to "complete" their turns.
