What Are The Best Free Games Online?
almostdead writes "CNET has just put up a story about what it thinks are the best online flash games of all time. These include titles like Line Rider, Bejeweled, Desktop Tower Defense and Portal, all of which I enjoy playing a lot. But my thirst for free games is peaking at the moment, probably due to an incredibly boring job and lack of imagination. Can you suggest any more good free games online?" Two words: Puzzle Pirates.
I also enjoy the portal game...
I mean get back to work
Try Nethack. You can play online at nethack.alt.org. All you need is telnet.
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
Portal looks like fun, but does it let you save your game in progress?

Trying to get first post on Slashdot is one of my favorite online games. As you can see I kind of suck at it.
Flash variety: http://www.teagames.com. I prefer motocross. Their games are generally pretty well done, and look nice.
Adventure-like: http://www.kingdomofloathing.com. I can't play this any more. It's too addictive. I get nothing else done in life.
I have to say, Portal is one of the best online games out there. It's great for us folks who don't have time to play the real Orange Box.

Of course, my current favorite is Theseus and the Minotaur: http://www.logicmazes.com/theseus.html

Dwarf Fortress has been a decent time waster for offline play (great for airplane rides as it turns out).
:)
For an online flash game I can't believe they left out Gold Miner, one of my favorite turn-brain-off-and-play flash games of all time. Great for those long corporate meetings...shhhhh.
I'm partial to Text Twist.

What, no falling sand game or the many variants? The hours I've wasted playing that is hard to think about. Also it was a great CPU stress test, gobbling up pretty much 100% of the CPU

Free, flash, but you play offline on your own computer.
Of course for the online competitive people you can still submit scores online.
500 levels of amazing platforming goodness
Believe it or not, if you can get past the super-fluffy-cute-website-filled-with-chilluns factor, many of the games there are actually pretty fun...
Of course, never let any of your old buddies see you playing them...
Hapland is one of my favorites. Not abundantly popular, but it makes for a really good think.

Also... If you're on slashdot, you've probably already heard of Notpron
If you haven't, you'll be unproductive for the next 16 hours, at which point you'll be stumped on level 21.
For the love of all that is unholy, don't RTFA. It's literally about 1.5 sentences per page along with the name of the game.
I've been playing Bejeweled for years. Not online mind you, but actually on my cell phone. It's an amazing five minute distraction during that short break in a two hour lecture.
I tried the demo of Peggle this week, and...well...while "entertaining" I doubt I would be willing to spend more than a few dollars on it. Now if it were ENTIRELY free, I could probably see myself playing it for a night while bored, otherwise I'll pass.
To anyone who remembers Infantry/Cosmic Rift/Tanarus, those games are now free again. Come back, let's play twin peaks!

6th Street Radio @ddombrowsky
Kingdom of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/) is my choice favourite. But it's not a flash game.
This one is easy to play while at work. (Unless you have Vista in which case telnet apparently isn't enabled by default.)

It's nice to know that there are still independently-run, noncommercial games out there like this one, where they don't claim they are free and then tempt you into paying big bucks later.

Phosphor. a shockwave based FPS. yes, that's right, an FPS. pretty good graphics too.
the Motherload! Great game. You dig with a miner unit, get money, upgrade and then dig deeper and deeper for the big scores. I wasted hours playing that game.

Maple Story, a 2D MMORPG. Pretty fun. Repetitive like most RPGs though. Repetitive like most RPGs though.
TFA is titled "The ten most addictive online flash games ever made"
Why then are three of the ten rated 2 out of 5 on their own addictiveness scale? A fourth is rated only 3/5...
Maybe they should have called it "the first ten flash games we found links to"?
Experience teaches only the teachable. -AH
Having spent entirely too much time with it, I had a lot of fun with Line Rider, and all the variations that came after the original.
Unfortunately, none of the Flash games I have played has lasting value... once I have expended enough time on them, rarely do I go back and play them again.

I'll second N. Edges out Cave Story as my favorite platformer of all time.
Best of all, the two are pretty drastically different, so it's worth trying both.
You could always play Game! - The Witty Online RPG.

"life is a joke, and someone is laughing at me"
I never finished it. Partly that's because I was playing in Linux, where the performance of this 2D game was awful on a system where Valve's 3D Portal ran smoothly at moderate-to-high quality settings. It's kind of sad that the Wine programmers can use Linux APIs to implement Windows APIs so much more efficiently than the Adobe programmers can use Linux APIs to implement their own Flash player.
Anyone want to spoil the ending for me? Was there 2D cake, and was it delicious and moist?

It's a multiplayer flash game where you throw snowballs.. and bricks.. at the other team.
Try it and you'll play for days.
Some of the best free games online are still MUDs. Like microbrews in an era of WoWeiser the King of MMORPBeers, they're capable of catering to specialized tastes in ways a game meant for the masses (for its strengths) just can't.
Granted, not Flash games. There's something of a disconnect between the title of TFA and the title of the Slashdot story, here.

And if you're willing to go really old-school, nethack is always available; the annual tournament is ongoing in the month of November. There are all kinds of trophies for smaller achievements, so first-time players can hope to get something but it's still competitive for experienced players--I pulled off 6 ascensions in a row at the June tournament and didn't make the top 3 for most consecutive, so the level of play is quite high.

I disagree with your statement. Sure Flash isn't as glamorous when dropping three stories then soaring across the room, but the functionality, level design and problem solving are all very directly comparable to its Orange-boxed counterpart.
I obsessed over the Flash version for a full week, leading me to buy the Box for the real deal. While fully satisfied with my purchase, I still had a strong sense of "I've solved this already" when playing through the Orange version.
So it's not hardware accelerated, first person, three-dimensional goodness. But it still is a very solid and faithful replication of everything that makes Portal, well, Portal.
I went to eat some animal crackers and the box said, "Do not eat if seal is broken." I opened the box and sure enough..
don't use flash, but, Free Internet Chess Server is my favorite free online game, great community, rated games, tournaments, chat channels.
I'd recommend Desktop Tower Defense, but I can't in good conscience doom 50% of /. readers to getting less sleep and lower performance reviews over the next 3 months.
I just moved to a new city - from Stockholm, Sweden to Phoenix, Arizona, so Ive had a lot of free time on my hands and much of that has gone to looking for good, free games. I havent limited this to only flash, obviously. Beggars cant be choosers.
But here are some I found that were very addicting!

Motherload

It may be interesting for a lot of people to know that Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto (1) to the public, free of charge

Another 2 free games that are classics are Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 available from rockstar classic site, FarCry is also free and is another kick ass game.
This is slightly off topic, I know, but has anyone tried out mangband (multiplayer angband)? The idea of a MMORoguelike strikes me as freakin' awesome, but the servers seem so empty from a cursory look. At least my wife and I could be playing co-op angband even if we're the only people on the server.
Dice Wars is a simplified Risk game that is quite fun.
Neopets.com is a great repository of flash games. I partial to a faerie bubbles myself. If you get bored with the games, then there's the world to explore, neopoints to collect, etc, etc.

Cause its a full-fledged application, not some applet or flash object. Quite frankly, given the amount of graphics & sound files the game involves, you really don't want to be downloading this thing every time you play; it would take 10 minutes to load up on a good connection, and who knows how long on a slow one.

I know the article mentions flash games, but there are a whole set of small fun games by "nifflas". Check out: http://nifflas.ni2.se/. All three of the games on the main page: Knytt, Knytt Stories, and Within a Deep Forest are fun. Within a Deep Forest is quite challenging.
The Matchstick Puzzles are also decent.
Crimson Room is neat too.

May I humbly suggest a game which has withstood the tests of time and remained a vibrant growing community of players, uses commonly available materials and requires very little resources to play and study? I speak of the oriental game of Go (or baduk or weiqi, depending on where you are from).
There are free java clients (such as KGS) you can download and play any of the thousands of constantly online players. I also work on an open source server to allow people to play Go as a turn based game, similar to old chess-by-mail setups but adapted for the internet, which is optimized for display on mobile phones such as the iPhone.
Go takes little time to learn the rules, but can be a lifelong pursuit. It costs almost nothing to play other amateurs, and I love to play people at my server, David's Go Dojo. Feel free to come and register for an account and start playing a few games, or download KGS and get access to thousands and thousands more players around the world.

Although not a flash game, how about a good old fashioned Multi User Dungeon (MUD)? One of the best (IMNSHO) is http://eclipse.cs.pdx.edu/ New Moon. It's been around for years (since 1993) and has all the best of what makes a MUD a MUD: quests, exploring, player-player interaction, AI non-player chars, skills based and a lot of fun.

Right now my absolute favorite free online game is called Mythos. It's a Diablo-like (or should I say Nethack/Roguelike?) hack-n-slash game that is incredibly fun. If there were a Diablo 3, this game would probably be it. The game is still in beta, but it's a lot of fun, and totally free.

Insaniquarium Singleplayer but fun
Winterbells There's something very cute and appealing about this game, and it makes a nice xmas-time diversion. All of the orisinal stuff is worth taking a look at.
Worse than CNET doing these infoverts/advarticles is raising them to the level of a /. post.
Can't beat Slashvertising to raise that page count and further validate CNET's business model.

On my system puzzle pirates runs in the browser web-start environment, with somewhat limited access to the filesystem etc, barring java implementation bugs.
Is flash-in-browser really "more limited" than java-in-browser?

Check it out at http://www.quadradius.com/.
It's chess on steroids - power-ups include invisible pieces, teaching powers, recruiting enemies. It is an incredibly rich game played head-to-head against others online.
Here's what others think about the game: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t324856.html
I have no affiliation with the site, but I'm about eight months into my addiction....
Well this allows loads of game modes and true multiplayer action!
It's totally great - get it here : http://www.jsw.ovine.net/
I'm not associated, just that this is an awesome game.
LOL when looking for the link I found a myspace page with some youtube videos as well: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=123476491
Fo sho!
Crank the volume waaaaay up when playing this fascinating (and greusome) game.
Hearing a cannon firing and a cat screeching "MrrrreeeeoooOOOOoOOOWwwwwrrrrrr..." will get you the most bizarre looks from fellow employees.

griddlers.net has thousands of nonagram puzzles.
I rather like the Ugly Friend game.

Official Pi Ambassador -- inquire for details!
Word of warning regarding notpron, the puzzles largely depend on the medium: lots of http and html wankery. If you're a web designer or something and also into puzzles you will probably eat it up. If you've read enough html source in your life and doing it "for fun" doesn't sound exciting, then move on.
I'm a firm believer that all puzzle elements should be "in front of your face". It's okay if they're not obvious, like a puzzle in a park that ends up using the trees right next to you (and hints to trees!). It's not okay if you have to cut the image into bits, feed it into photoshop, and then do manipulations of the data. It's not okay if you have to write a program to pull the numeric values of the colors out of the bitmaps. This kind of puzzle is just computer fetishizing, as far as I'm concerned. It's *really* hard to make puzzles that are both challenging and do not include lots of tedious dead-ends that people will go down, smart or dumb. Adding elements to your puzzle that amplify this problem I think is simply bad craftsmanship.

I've been playing this game since before Sony bought it, stuck it up as Pay-to-Play, let it die, then made it free again. Now it's gaining popularity again and I think it's worth checking out. Think of it as a massive, multiplayer SMASH TV, with different game types like Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Mechanized Skirmish, Warzone, and even an RPG.

incredible stuff
Sometimes, life itself is sarcasm...
Fly the Copter is a classic. I love this game check it out http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/copter
This is just one of many links search google for "fly the copter" for more.
Mod parent up. It's free again! Great game.
Nanaca Crash
Both 2 and 5 have some sort of fecal component to the game. Not to mention in 5 they seem to cry like little bitches every time the game ends. An excellent message for children. Watch out for fly shit, but no matter what you do you'll end up crying in the end.
I often play Tremulous (GNU GPL) and Enemy Territory (freeware).
I passionately hate all things flash. Ackkk!

IS MUME (mume.pvv.org 4242 from memory) still running? Geez that MUD just about killed my college career back in the mid-80s and was still running into 2000 last I looked.
Once bitten, twice shy.
I love Deliantra http://www.deliantra.net/ very much, it's a bit retro-style and has quite some depth. At least I got addicted to it quickly... Another nice thing about Deliantra is that you can also make your own maps and monsters and contribute them. Also, in contrast to many other free online games, it's completely free software, and everything is available under the GPL. You can get the whole code and gamedata anytime and do your own stuff with it.

It might look like it at first, but while it does share many similarities with the genre, it's not a roguelike game. It's a sandbox-style kingdom-building game of absolutely incredible complexity. They just released a huge update about a month ago that gave your digging a z-axis and, combined with a fluid dynamics engine, you can do some pretty hilarious things to defend your fortress.
And to get you started, check out the "my first fortress" and other starting guides in the game wiki:

Three big Flash RPGs and a handful of smaller games. You can play all the games for free, though the best stuff in the RPG costs. It'S only a one-time fee, not a monthly payment, though. Updates weekly, grand community

You want flash games? YOU GOT 'EM!
:p
I have probably a gig of flash games I've downloaded to my computer. A lot of it is crap, actually. But there are several that are quite addictive and I thought I would share.
Most of these you can grab and save locally. Since I had most of these saved, I just Googled for the game names and linked the first or second or third result that came up. Most I checked to make sure the site would load without popups and teh game was still there and would load. I included the name in case the result doesn't work as it should (such as a site getting slashdotted! - I could have used coral cache [.nyud.net] on these, but I was unsure if it'd work with the flash files as well. So, if one doesn't work, you can always Google the name.
Also, if you saved the flash files locally, you can also download a standalone flash player, courtesy of Adobe, so that you can play the games on your home PC as well. Standalone debug versions are apparently available for Mac, Linux and Windows.
Below is a list of some games I thought I'd share with y'all. Some have probably been mentioned (n, dice wars), but those that were in the main article (portal flash version) I've skipped.
Unreal - http://www.armorgames.com/games/unrealflash_popup.html

Dice Wars (Risk) - http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/dice/dice.html
Oh, sure, it's a bit of shameless self-promotion, but I encourage anyone who enjoys turn-based pseudo-RPGs like LORD or KoL to check it out. It's a free casual RPG I'm writing in my spare time, at least in part as an exercise in stretching what's possible to do with PHP and AJAX. So... maybe not a "flash game" per se, but fits the general theme of casual games one can play over their lunch. ;)
Now go kill some slimes! http://www.pseudoquest.com/

check out travian.com for a real-time, massively multiplayer, simcity/civ/diplomacy (sorta) free online game.
server 6 (s6.travian.com) just started yesterday, so now is the time to start!
Here's one that definitely should have made the list: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/launchpad/launchball/
Very very addictive. I just wish there were more levels to play.
http://www.corwin.ca/gridlock/...
Would be addictive if there were more than 40 levels.
"Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!"
If you like Risk, go to . Highly addictive, lots of play variation possibilities. Not Flash, but DHTML/AJAX (even better). Good playability.
I don't have a link handy but Freespace 2!
Good enough to be made into a commercial game on many platforms, but the original Flash game can still be had at NewGrounds.com.

I've been playing games at http://www.kongregate.com/ lately. Most of the ones mentioned in TFA are online there.

...thus spoke the waffle. and thus it was so.
That's a good list you have there. The Battle For Wesnoth is verry good, and that is right next to the one I am about to introduce to whomever...
A good one that is better than Diablo-1 is The Mana World. No relentless gore and unsensable character in that title. It's opensource/GPL in C++. Has an average of 25 accounts actively in the server at any time of the solar day. Clean environment of people and quick server. Doesn't need system high requirements for 2D, but a openGL accelerator and modest resources (133MHz of free processor execution) would allow some neet grahics effects that don't interrupt or improve gameplay over 2D mode. Gets perceivably better with each version, and no gameplay screw-ups like how Blizzard has done.
The Mana World

YPP's "launch from the web page"'s current version uses application local storage to hold the game program and data files. Yes, it asks you if you trust the publisher.
I haven't seen it ask for unlimited computer access in many versions.
Flight of the Hamsters
Now no one will see this. :P
http://www.globulos.com
Globulos is a great collection of multiplayer flash games. It used to be completely free, but now it only allows restricted play for guests (after the 15 minute limit, you can just refresh the page and play another 15 minutes). They will rotate which game modes guests are able to play. "Foot" is the classic football (soccer) style game and is the best in my opinion; I don't think guests can play it at the moment, so don't judge the game until you've played foot. I've come very close to subscribing many times... I wish they'd port this to the DS sometime.
Rotation ( http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=6314 ) is a real mind-bender. Genuinely hard, in the way that a Rubik's cube is hard at first. But it rewards the careful thinker...
Tanarus is a great tank game that Sony recently opened up as a freebie:
Tanarus Home Page
There's always "Ouverture Facile", with a slight drawback - it's in French - yeah, yeah, I know.
Actually, it's - amazing - bilingual: http://www.ouverture-facile.com/riddles/index.html
Check it out and enjoy!
On the one hand, Puzzle Pirates uses the registry to store account information (so that you don't have to re-enter preferences each time). Similarly, it does download and store new assets as needed. And the interplay between the Java runtime and the game is a bit messier than a usual program.
I suspect the real reason it wants full access, though, is that it was developed on Windows in a time before usage restrictions had any meaning on that platform. It predates Vista by a good chunk of time, and you can't say that XP had any meaningful protection.
Great game, though. It's still one of my favorite after all these years.
The ______ Agenda
I don't have much of an opinion of free flash games, having played only one or two very long ago. Just to get free games or info on them in general, I strongly recommend Home of the Underdogs www.the-underdogs.info as the best out-of-trademark and free games listing and download site on the internet. It may not be as well maintained as ever due to its keeper's busy schedule but it is chock-a-block with more enterainment than a sane player could exploit in a lifetime. Run through it and pick your favorites out of there.
They're getting better, and I'm enjoying it more, but... Man, this first week or so has not made me want to subscribe.
My own pointless vanity vintage computing page
Shards of Dalaya, uses the engine from a popular game engine with all original content and improved mechanics.
Bowmaster Prelude would qualify (Bowmaster 2 coming)
This is not news. This is useless bullshit.
Boooooooooooooooooo. Gtfo.
Home of the Underdogs has quite a few games that are either freeware or are now free, like Freespace 2.
Liberated Games has many now free games that were once commerical offerings.
Rockstar has also made GTA2 and 2 other games free.
...cyrkam airtos? It's an excellent game where you have to throw crumpled paper balls into a wastepaper bin! It appeals with its simplicity. http://games.sticky.tv/cyrkam_airtos/
Nanaca crash is far superior, actually interactive, and waaay more fun than this!
Far Cry. Not Flash, but now free (ad supported). Definitely one of the best FPS games.

I like playing Frantic Fish at Gamesville.
It's like Bingo after it's had a few Red Bulls.
Funny name notwithstanding, it's a pretty cool little MMORPG that's done entirely in flash.
It has free to play and pay to play modes.

It's not Flash, and it's not fancy, but it is massively multi-player, free and ad-free. Give WEBoggle a try, and maybe throw something in the tip jar if you like it - I could really use it right now.
The Crimson Room (http://www.fasco-csc.com/index_j.php) and its ilk are pretty good. I didn't remember the link, so I found this one via googling. I hope it's correct.

http://warfish.net/war/home I'm finally down to one game at a time after playing an average of 10 at a time for over a year. One of the great parts: getting emails to remind you to go procrastinate. It's turn based strategy, so you can hide it whenever your boss walks in without affecting your game.
Flash based, the source of an office competition... http://onslaught.playr.co.uk/

Neat MUD based on Magic: the Gathering. Well, we like it, anyway, YMMV! http://dominia.egn.com.au/ Or to connect, telnet to dominia.egn.com.au 3333
If, like me, you miss the oldschool BBS games, and want something that is more than just a five minute distraction but a persistent world, try Colony Wars or Legend of the Green Dragon. My fave flash game at the moment is Dicewars, a simplified risk style game. Enjoy!
can be found here -> http://goodexperience.com/games/
nquake is great! Original quakeworld
http://nquake.sourceforge.net/
Although not flash isketch(www.isketch.org) is a very original game where players basically play a new version of pictionary in a huge online community in various rooms ranging from English(uk/us) to warcraft to science and mathematical topics. I think its awesome and id like to see more people on it!
Don't forget the first real MMOG subspace/continuum been going 10 years strong now!

Wee War is a great free to play online strategy game. It's a lot like Advance Wars, on a hex board. http://weewar.com/?referrer=joelodom
maple story is still free since i started playing january this year
Word Sandwich
Simple, but mildly addicting.
I learned about it from the blog of an avid Lingo fan.
There is a Java based take on the old Asteroids game called Basteroids. You can register and submit high scores, as and when, or play anonymously. This has taken up far too much of my time over the years. There are also a bunch of other games, some Flash based, some Java, and some for Linux and Macs. Some more games, including Pacman clone.
Trying to associate Microsoft with "fun" is like trying to associate Satan with aromatherapy. -Tycho
Here's a Manic Miner clone I wrote a few years ago entirely in JavaScript: http://www.ellosnuncaloharian.com/online/mm/manicminer.html No plug-ins required and it should work in most browsers.
After about three months of relentless Willy action I reckon I'm now as good as when I was 10.
but Diablo, Diablo II, and Star Craft were all free to play online unlike Everquest, World of Warcraft, and other MMORPG Junk that requires that you pay ever month.
Entropia is technically free to download and play, but all you can do with a free account is "sweat" and run around getting killed so that you get evade, courage, and other defense related skills. After you get 1000 sweat, you should be able to trade it to another player for 5-10 peds. 10 peds = 1.00 USD. Getting 1k in sweat will take a while (probably a weekend or so)

Dice Wars is another good time, I found it looking for a replacement for RISK. Simple yet addicting. http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/dice/dice.html/
The seekers do no need truth, the seekers do find truth and the finding do be painful
http://kdice.com/
It's like risk, only instead of army pieces, they are replaced with dice. When you attack an adjacent territory, the number of dice you have roll against however many dice are in the defending territory. The highest sum wins the roll.
At the end of your turn you gain a number of dice equal to contiguous territories you controll and they are then randomly distributed to your territories.
It's got a ranking point system and is incredibly fun.
I like doing the jigsaws at jigzone.com. You can change the piece cut to some pretty cool shapes and make the puzzles as hard or easy as you like. They're also timed so you can see how you compare against others.
MPDTD, http://www.casualcollective.com/
Slightly addictive, highly recommended. The goal is to built towers that kill creeps faster than your opponent. It's pretty fun...kind of like multiplayer tetris.

dungeon runners is a free online mmo.
Operation Emergent Evolution is also a cool website with lots of free games for you to play. Interesting interface, I must say. Even though it is not a commercial website, you get almost immediate support as it is maintained by a game enthusiast.
Marking for later.
[Disclaimer: I work on this game. Not a marketing shill, I just make art for it and actually enjoy playing the game for free.]
Dungeon Runners is a totally goofball free-to-play casual MMORPG for people that don't have 8 hours a night to devote to WOW raids. :) It's designed to be fun to play in 15 to 30 minute chunks if that's all you have. There's an optional $5/mo subscription for stacking potions, a bank and premium items, but all the actual world content and dungeons is available to everybody. We have a large amount of free players that enjoy it without ever paying a dime.

:)
Me and my co-workers would play pool and table tennis for fricken hours. That girl erica on there is a table tennis BEAST!
And they're free, and fun
This is a simple game that once you start you just wont be able to stop! Just build a few towers to that shoot to stop monsters from reaching their destination..... Yea right. Get yourself a group scoreboard and try to perfect your maize. You will kill a lot of time with this game. I have created a damage vs cost table for all the towers at their different levels - just for those of you that obsess. http://www.gozlit.com/blog/index.php/Nigel/2007/11/cost-vs-damage-matrix-for-desktop-tower- The game is at http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/ The table I have created is for version 1.5; which was the latest when i wrote this. Enjoy
My favorite free games are on rinkworks.com; but be warned that these are adventure and RPG style games, not shoot-em-ups.
