DQSD
I haven't seen any mention of DQSD yet, so I figured I'd link it. Embeds a searchbar into your Windows taskbar, and comes with a HUGE set of default commands, stored in configuration files. Then you can add your own basic aliases, or write small scripts into XML files. Pretty cool.

Re:AlrightHi,
I use "Daves Quick Search Deskbar" http://www.dqsd.net/.
It lives on the taskbar, just click it, type in an alias of the program you wish to run and voila. Shortcut for activating the screen is winkey+s. It's not initially set up to shortcut to programs, but if you install it, then go to options (>>) configure > local alias's you can add aliases to local programs in the format:
aliasname|run location
e.g. writer|run "C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 1.9.65\program\swriter.exe"
You'll have to reload the program (>> configure > reload) before the changes to the aliases file take effect initially. Also there is quite a good group of people developing extra additions to it, for advanced web searching easily. *Really* useful, 'tis a rare day I have to touch that start button.
Hope it helps!

"Sie Info" Feature and Deskbars
Well, since my site still ranks #1 and #2 for the appropriate keywords with A9, I like it.
The "Site Info" rollover is very nice, it gives a bit of pre-click background about the page.
Seems like every search engine is offering some kind of Toolbar/Deskbar these days. Does anyone know if the deskbars are all built on Dave Bau's original open source project? -
Search Add-Ons
I find the Google Toolbar to be quite a usefull little add-on to IE. Any time I want to search, it's there
For another nifty Windows95+/IE5.5+ based add-on search tool, see Dave's Quick Search Deskbar. It's so easily user-customized that even *I* was able to create the search Slashdot function
Google is the default engine, but you can set it to anything, IIRC.
Here is the Sourceforge page for the project if you want to see the project history or contribute. -
Time for a DQSD update
Just in case HotBot catches on again, I submitted a search config file for everyone's favorite (isn't it?) open source search toolbar: Dave's Quick Search Deskbar. The HotBot search lets you specify which engine to use with a command line switch.

DQSD Windows IE Search Tool
For Windows 95 and later users with IE5.5+, also see Dave's Quick Search Deskbar.

Re:What still surprises me
Dammit, that's a depressing statistic. And why?
I dunno.
I don't know any programming languages, but if I did I'd probably play around with open source projects.
I don't even know javascript, but it's simple enough that I can set up Dave's Quick Search Deskbar with all the sites I use, and simple measurement converters etc. I may spend more time setting them up than I save the the shortcuts, but I do because it's actually fun, interesting. I can etc.
Making changes, improvements, or fixing errors in a proper program that I use regularly would be even cooler.
So ha! Who needs sleep? I wanna learn to program!
Where's that C++ for Dummies? I'm going to put my money where my mouth is...
