Re:It takes a while...Actually the 40bit key was reduced to a 32[iirc] key due to an error in the keygen routine.
Do you have a reference for this? I've followed the CSS saga closely and read most of the original cryptanalysis papers and this is the first I've ever heard of CSS keys being generated algorithmically, much less that keygen having a flaw that reduced the effective key size.
In any case, there would be no need to exploit the keygen (if it exists, which I doubt) because there's an O(2^25) attack on the cipher itself.
Similar to Sprint's encryption on one of their phones being 24 bit encryption - with the first 10 bits always being 0.Do you have a link to this? Was this on Sprint's CDMA phones, or GSM? I suspect that you're referring to the A5/2 cipher used for GSM and, again, the keys are random (though small -- 40 bits) and the cipher is so weak that it can be broken in real time. There's no keygen used for A5/2 (or A5/1) keys. If you're referring to something else, I'd like to read about it.

Re:The English story is correctly translated.
[note: this is not going to be a popular opinion, but, please, think before slapping]
It has NOTHING to do with copying.
Originally, you are correct. DeCSS was built to decode discs without using one of the proprietary (and unavailable) players.
BUT, unfortunately, it has opened the door to DVD copyright infringement ("piracy"), like it or not.
You don't have to go far to find DeCSS being used in "shady" ways:
http://www.dvd-copy.com/
http://www.dvdcopycentral.com/
http://www.howtocopydvds.com/
http://www.dvdcopypro.com/
.. I could go on.
While it shouldn't be inherently illegal to decode and copy discs for legitimate purposes, that's not how DeCSS is being used, the majority of the time. It sucks, but it's true.
To many people, it has EVERYTHING to do with copying (or decoding and re-encoding to other media, distributing, etc). -
Framing the context is everything
Generally whoever frames the argument wins. The MPAA framed the DeCSS case as "evil hackers stealing movies". Felder frames his case as "scientists being censored in the pursuit of knowledge". Basically there is no way he can lose.
The DMCA hinges on the concept of a circumvention device. If the DeCSS case was framed similarly, with heavy emphasis on scientific analysis the weakness of CSS, with emphasis on abstract mathematical algorithms, it would have won. Unfortunately DeCSS was just a hack tool. Without the larger context there was no way it could possibly win.

Re:Does fucking MPAA help the cause?
If you're looking for technical information www.dvd-copy.com has some info on CSS
This fake DeCSS was a faintly amusing joke. But its embarassing that slashdot has to waste out time with this crap. Go read www.dvd-copy.com and try to understand something.
Stop acting like silly script-kiddies, thinking you're so bad with your DeCSS tarball, damn!

Response to Comments
I'd post these comments on PDJ, but we're currently swamped with slashdot hits, so I figgered I'd do it here:
- Yes, it's silly. Yes, it's a joke. But humor is one of the biggest assets of the freedom-loving community. Let's use it wisely.
- Wide distribution of DeCSS *may* be a minor nuisance for "good" people looking for DeCSS. Note, however, that the DVD-CCA has done much, MUCH worse damage by shutting down sites with DeCSS and sites that link to sites with DeCSS. The problem of having to sift through false DeCSS's is a drop in the bucket by comparison.
- Also remember that someone who's looking for DeCSS just to use it only needs to find *one* copy. Even if they get a few false positives, they will eventually find a real one. However, someone with a legal agenda will be looking for ALL copies. Having thousands of decoys will make their hunt much more difficult.
- If you're really worried about making it easier for "good" people to find DeCSS, mirror it! Or at least link to the excellent meta-site at dvd-copy.com.
- Someone smart will be able to find the "real" DeCSS using file sizes and hashes. Fine! Let's make them work harder. Also, the person who does that coding (they'll probably use Free Software like perl to get it done) should think long and hard about it. Shame on geeks who sell out their brothers to The Man!
- I do not weep for Jack Valenti and the MPAA. They already mentioned the DeCSS Distribution Contest in legal filings. I'm sorry if we're making it hard to sue the Internet. Maybe the next industry cartel with this idea will think twice about it.
- If you can't get into Pigdog Journal, try one of these mirror sites:
-
Re:Questions for Jack Valenti
Why then, do you charge different prices in different countries?
Because of different distribution costs in those countries. Different markets have different markups because each market has it's own distribution system which requires different markups so that the people along that distribution chain can be paid for their work.
(This is the standard reason given by most hardware manufacturers as to why PCs cost about 50% more in certain parts of the world than in others.)
Region codes exist on DVDs in order to prevent retail marketers from circumventing their own internal distribution model. That is, the distributors that the studios deal with to distribute materials around the world pretty much demanded that some sort of region code be added so that the distributors can maintain their effective market position, rather than be bypassed by the store fronts who could otherwise buy the materials from a distributor in another country and save money.
And the total number of arrests in Hong Kong would be?
They're working with the PRC in order to raise awareness of copyright issues in Hong Kong. However, the MPAA does not control China, and so negotiations are necessarly on-going.
And your reply to the prosecutor who said they did it at your request would be?
The prosecutor was made aware of the violation of copyright law. But the MPAA doesn't control the Noregian government or their prosecutors; they can only lodge a complaint.
So you do agree that once you've bought the DVD drive and the DVD disk, you have the right to use whatever tools you want to view it on a Linux computer?
Of course. However, you do not have the right to distribute those tools, or to repurpose those tools to violate studio's intellectual property rights by copying the tracks off the DVD for potential redistribution across the 'net.
One thing that Mr. Valenti does get is the explosive nature of bandwidth over the Internet. That is, while now it is impractical to download a 10gb movie file, tomorrow better compression technology and higher bandwidths will make it trivial to do. Just as 10 years ago, the thought of storing one record album for playback on your computer was seen as completely impractical--while now, people are routinely storing dozens of CDs on their hard disk for convenient playback.
I personally see a time in the near future where downloading a movie over the net will be nearly as fast as downloading a picture is today. And when that happens--when it is possible to download "Star Wars" off the 'net in a few minutes--either some form of infrastructure needs to be in place to protect the intellectual property rights of studios, or "Star Wars" will make the top "MPEGWAREZ.COM" download for 30 weeks running.
So I personally suspect if you ask the MPAA the above question about Linux, that they'd respond that as soon as they get a request from a closed-source developer who will develop a DVD player for Linux gives them a viable request to build such a beast, they'll gladly license the CSS algorithms. And I suspect given the flap over Linux, they'll even do it at a discount, just so they can prevent the open-source community from producing tools that could be easily repurposed for piracy.
And don't give me the "we won't repurpose the code" bit--remember, the biggest strength in the open source community is it's biggest weakness: that when source is open and free, programmers are able to reuse the code for whatever purpose strikes their fancy.
Final Question: You can even ask the audience or call a friend. Has anyone ever sucessfully used DeCSS to copy a DVD movie to another PC and then play it back?
http://www.dvd-copy.com
Duh.
You know, if you are going to ask hardball questions, try to ask questions that are more hardball than this. Because most of these questions have already been asked and answered elsewhere.
Personally I think that the MPAA has a problem. And I personally think their approach to solving this problem is the wrong approach. Alienating the very technical community they will need in the future to help them maximize the value of their properties is not a good thing to do.
And personally I don't agree with some of the answers I gave above: using technology to protect monopolies is just plain wrong IMHO. But in industries where technology can be used to protect distribution monopolies, it's being used. And that includes country codes in digital media such as Sega games and DVD movies. -
Defendants are hurting their own causeLooking at the ruling, I was struck that the judge still believed DeCSS was just a tool for copying DVDs, and not playing them. However, when I read the "defendants" section, I found out why. The defendants were carefully chosen I think - for example, one of them had a web site called dvd-copy.com. The site seems to have a lot of information on trading DVDs on the internet and how to use DeCSS to copy your DVD to a CD-R. The judge isn't going to look at that and believe the defendant saying that this tool isn't for copying. It would seem obvious that this defendant WAS pushing illegal copying of DVDs. And therefore, while there may be a legal use of DeCSS, a nice picture of illegal use is being presented to the judge.

Are we going to defend pirates now?
How many people who've posted in this thread have actually looked at one of the sites in question, dvd-copy.com.
Can anyone really claim that a site with headlines like:
How to find/trade FREE DVD Movies online
and
What you need to trade Moviez online
is only interested in playback under linux? This is a site about pirating!
I'm all for DeCSS distribution, but this site isn't helping our cause. Championing this case is like the NRA championing a murderer as an example of responsible gun ownership. -

The acts of the Defendants, which are described more fully below, violate the provisions of the United States Copyright Act governing circumvention of copyright protection systems, 17 U.S.C. 1201, et seq. The Parties
2. Plaintiff Universal Studios, Inc., is a corporation duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware.
3. Plaintiff Paramount Pictures Corporation is a corporation duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware.
4. Plaintiff Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., is a corporation duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware.
5. Plaintiff TriStar Pictures, Inc., is a corporation duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware.
6. Plaintiff Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., is a corporation duly incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware.

Plaintiffs, either directly or through their affiliates, distribute motion pictures theatrically, via television broadcast, and on portable media such as videocassette tapes and digital versatile discs ("DVDs") for distribution to the home video market. In the course of its business, each plaintiff or its predecessor in rights obtained ownership of the United States copyrights, the exclusive reproduction, production, and/or distribution rights under United States copyrights, and/or state statutory and common law rights, in various motion pictures in DVD format in the United States, including such recent blockbusters as "Titanic" and "The Matrix," and approximately 4,000 titles which have been released in the United States on DVD to date. Current industry estimates place DVD sales at over 1,000,000 units per week.

Background Facts
DVD Technology
17. With the advent of the VCR and videocassette tapes, home viewing of motion pictures became a convenient, inexpensive way to enjoy motion pictures. DVDs are 5-inch-wide discs that hold full-length motion pictures, are the most current technological advancement for private home viewing of motion pictures. This technology significantly improves the clarity and the overall quality of the motion picture when played on a television screen or computer monitor.
18. DVDs incorporating full-length motion pictures, together with additional and ancillary features such as interviews and alternative sound tracks, can be played back for viewing in the home by dedicated, free standing "DVD players" and by personal computers configured with a DVD "drive" and additional hardware or software modules, sometimes referred to as "media players."
19. DVDs contain digital information. When motion pictures in form are digital copied or transmitted, the clarity and overall quality of the motion pictures do not suffer (as they do when a copy is made from an analog source, such as a video cassette). Moreover, the fact that the motion pictures contained on DVDs are in digital format allows any unauthorized copies of those motion pictures from DVDs to be transmitted over the Internet, stored in computer [illegible], and duplicated for unlawful sale, transfer and exchange. Once these copies are in the hands of another user, the unlawful process can begin once again because the copies have the clarity and quality of the original DVDs containing the motion picture.
Contents Scramble Systems ("CSS")
20. Because motion pictures in unprotected digital format on DVDs would be subject to ready unlimited copying and create a threat to the market viability of DVD technology, the plaintiffs were reluctant to release valuable film libraries and new film releases without the implementation of a copy protection and access control system. Plaintiffs therefore ultimately accepted a copy protection and access control system developed by Matshusita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and Toshiba Corporation -- the Contents Scramble System ("CSS") -- in order to provide security to the copyrighted contents of DVDs and thereby provide protection for the copyrighted content against unauthorized copying. CSS includes elements of encryption and other security and authentication measures that require DVD playback devices, including appropriately configured personal computers, to operate with certain keys in order to descramble and intelligibly play back copies of motion pictures from DVDs. All members of the DVD industry, including software and hardware manufacturers of DVD players, DVD replicators and the content providers -- the motion picture studios -- adopted CSS as direct licensees or by [illegible] through CSS licensees.
21. Each of the plaintiffs relied upon the security provided by CSS in manufacturing, protecting and distributing to the public copyrighted motion pictures in DVD format. Those motion pictures, may of which involved investments of tens and even hundreds of millions of dollars, were distributed on CSS-protected DVDs.
Descrambling of CSS and the Creation and Proliferation of the "DeCSS" Utility
22. On information and belief, hackers in Europe were able to descramble the encryption on DVDs and create -- and post on the World Wide Web -- an unauthorized utility commonly referred to as "DeCSS," which allows motion pictures in DVD format to be decrypted and illegally copied.
23. Subsequently, defendant Reimerdes posted DeCSS on his Internet Web site, www.dvd-copy, along with the statement "Yes, you can trade DVD movie files over the Internet. You can break the encryption on any DVD and allow users to copy the contents of a DVD into the a [sic] hard drive or alternative media! Notice: The DVD Copy Control Association are cocksuckers!" Reimerdes also told Internet users, under a section titled "How To Find/Trade FREE DVD Movies Online," that "people gather online in impromptu communities to trade these digital copies through one-to-one file transfers and group chatting."
24. Defendant Eric Corley a/k/a Emmanuel goldstein also posted DeCSS on his Internet web site www.2600.com/news/1112-files. In addition, Corley has designed and and in that site "hot links" to the DeCSS file. Corley's site states that DeCSS is a "free DVD decoder" that allows "people to copy DVDs." Corley's site also exhorts others ("as many of you as possible all throughout the world") to "take and mirror [the DeCSS] files. . .
."25. Defendant Roman Kazan also posted DeCSS on his Internet web site, www.krackdown.com/decss/. Claim for Relief
(Violation of Provisions Governing Circumvention
of Copyright Protection Systems,
17 U.S.C. 1201 et seq.)26. Plaintiffs incorporate by this reference the allegations contained in paragraphs 1 through 25, inclusive.
27. The Copyright Act, Title 17 U.S.C. 1201(a)(2), provides that:
[n]o person shall manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide, or otherwise traffic in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof, that:
(A) is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title;
(B) has only limited commercially significant purpose or use other than to circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title; or

28. Each defendant offers to the public, provides, or otherwise traffics in, DeCSS through his Internet website.
29. CSS is a technological measure that (a) effectively controls access to works protected by the Copyright Act, and (b) effectively protects rights of copyright owners to control whether an end user can reproduce, manufacture, adapt, publicly perform and/or distribute unauthorized copies of their copyright works or portions thereof.
30. DeCSS (a) is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing the protection afforded by CSS, (b) has only limited commercially significant purpose or use other than to circumvent CSS or the protection afforded by CSS, and/or (c) is marketed by Defendants and/or others acting in concert with them with the knowledge of its use in circumventing CSS or the protection afforded by CSS.
31. By offering to the public, providing, or otherwise trafficking in DeCSS, Defendants have violated the provisions governing Circumvention of Copyright Protection Systems set forth in the Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. 1201 et seq.
32. Unless enjoined by this Court, Defendants' violations will continue. Plaintiffs' remedy at law is not adequate. Protection of Plaintiffs' rights must include an injunction. Prayer for Relief

Re:Justice vs. piracy
Get a life. De-CSS is *not* being used to pirate whatsoever
Hah, I almost laughed out loud when I read that. Are you really so dense? The files are being compressed down to VCD, and then ether burned or transferred online. Were you unaware of the existence of dvd-copy.com Take a look, and stop being so unbelievably blind.
No, I do not support the DVD-CCA, but I don't support idiotic doublethink ether.

Mirrors part 1Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Temporary restraining order DENIED!
Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.
We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.
Here is the EFF's stance on this case.
Save a copy of this web page now!
We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.
Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.
Here is a 2600 story on this.
Explanation on legality of this information
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.
Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:
NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Jan 19, 12:13am EST
Numbers are only for the maintainer's convenienceWe apologize for the length of time between updates. This list has gotten quite large and thus more difficult to maintain.
Much thanks to this site for listing mirrors of the mirror lists.

Mirrors part 1Note: This mirror list has been copied from http://www.humpin.org/decss/, on January 2nd 2000 13:13 GMT
Mirrors since 28-Dec-99 added by me.
To my main DVD page (containing list of lists of mirrors) Visit Humpin!
If you need a REAL reason to host these files, try reading this. Truth has never been more purely distilled.Save a copy of this web page now!

MirrorsYou have one bat and there are 100 million holes Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Current Mirrors Last updated: Wed, Dec 29, 3:14pm EST

A different list of mirrorsHere is the most recent version of the css-auth CVS code as well as DeCSS. Please mirror & redistribute.
This page was originally a mirror of http://www.rhythm.cx/dvd/, but then rhythm.cx was forced down.
So I've taken it on myself to keep a list of mirrors. I try to update and check the status of the listed sites at least once per day. If you know of any mirrors not in my list, if you wish to mirror this page, or if you find that any of the listed sites went down, then contact me.
you can download the following three files from here:
DeCSS.zip - DeCSS
css-auth.tar.gz - CSS authentication source
LiVid.tgz - Linux DVD Code

Note to lawyers and other scum:
This information is widely available by now, and no matter what you do, you will not be able to supress it. It was the DVD consortium that f***ed up, and now you're trying to solve a technological problem with threats and legal action?

Explanation on legality of this information:
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:

Mirror listOh yeah
Visit Humpin! (No, it's not what you think!)
Explanation on legality of this information:
The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.

Re:Not really hosting it
In a few seconds it autodownloads the one from Denmark.. just hit stop on the page that says "Contacting downloading site, please wait...". You can choose from three sites besides the one in Denmark:
(Click shift when you click on these to download)
www.capital.net
www.dvd-copy.com
perso.libertysurf.fr I think maybe the guy's ISP deleted the file after "discovering" what was on there.. :)

Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.
Attention
www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk.
UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.
I have taken it upon myself to mirror the mirrors. So until such time as the hounds of hell come a-knocking at my door, I present for you this list:
