Re:i wished they'd pay-as-you-go
There are a few websites that let you rent movies by mail on a per movie basis rather than by subscription. Prices are similar to brick and mortar stores. http://www.dvdovernight.com/ is one that I have used before. Pretty decent. There are more websites too. Google it.

Re:i wished they'd pay-as-you-go
Here is a convenient pay-as-you-go site that works well. I for one prefer this model to the subscription model. More cost efficient if you go for long periods of time without a rental. Selection is decent as well, but not amazing. Either way, still worth a look if you don't like subscriptions.

Re:You want to make some SERIOUS money?
There are several.... Try DVDOvernight. They have a resonable selection of newer and fetish titles. I've always had good luck with them. Or do a search on Yahoo's Directory, several are listed.

Rent your anime online
Why not just rent your anime ovre the internet? DVDOvernight and Netflix both have a wide selection of anime titles, and with netflix, you can even get a free trial. You rent up to three movies at a time, they mail them to you, and you keep them as long as you want, and when you're finished, you mail them back in a pre-paid envelope they provide. Now you can watch something other than Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns while sitting alone by yourself in your parents' basement.

My requirement -- deliver porn to Utah!I was a casual customer of dvdovernight.com until they suddenly decided to not deliver their porn titles to Utah. I emailed to ask why, as I had gotten them before. I guess someone was asleep at the switch, since they told me I should have never had them delivered to me. They said they were getting really picky about their blacklisted zipcodes, since there was some coalition in Utah (they woudln't give me the name) who was going to sue, or was threating to sue, another company. I really liked their service, and I really hate punishing them (by withholding my business), since they're only covering their asses against our lame local lawmakers. However, that's what I want. I can rent typical movies from the Blockbuster down the street.
As far as I know, hard porn is only banned from being produced and sold in Utah, not from out of state. Since IANAL, the relavent laws can be found here. If any legal types wish to throw interpretations into the mix, feel free.
Sounds like there's a "chilling effect" going on (but I may be mis-using that term, not being a lawyer and all), and it's pissing me off. If I had the resources, and if I had a case to sue, I might take it up. As it stands now, I must slink off to the Wyoming or Neveda borders to get my fix.
Yes, I live in a state where a 40-year-old virgin morman woman is setting the bar for community standards in decency. Search for "Paula Huston" or "Utah porn czar". Sheesh! Yeah, like she is the typical resident of Utah.

Twice a Former Customer
I used Netflix for a few months when I first got by DVD player (a couple of years ago) and again for about 2 months a year later. I cancelled twice for the same reasons: 1. I live in Florida and the shipping times were outrageous. I would go for a week and a half without DVDs sometimes. 2. New Releases are rarely in stock. Blockbuster gets a good 10-20 copies of the new releases and almost always have one in stock. This was very annoying because I found I was just renting older films from Netflix and going to Blockbuster for new releases. 3. Multiple DVD movies are not counted as one. If you want both disks of Fight Club, they are treated as 2 rentals. These are all problems that can be fixed, if Netflix decided to. I mentioned these complaints to them both times I cancelled. My new system is to use Blockbuster for new releases and DVDOvernight for the harder-to-find rentals. Also don't forget about Blockbuster's Rewards program. For just $10 (supposed to be yearly, but I've never had to renew) I've received about 150 free rentals over the past two years. A great deal.

Other Options
Here are some other options. I haven't tried any of these yet, but I'm about to.
Rent My DVD
DVD Barn
Number Slate
DVD Overnight
I recently rented Payback from Netflix. I never used to check the DVD's face for scratches because I assumed Netflix has some sort of quality control (mistake #1). I got about 20 minutes into the movie and then it wouldn't go any further. Upon inspection, the DVD face looked like someone had taken steel wool to it. How the hell does that get past the retard that puts it in the little envelopes?
So I reported it as unplayable and had them send a replacement. I figured this had to happen from time to time .. give them a break. The replacement came and I eagerly watched it (after being teased with the first 20 minutes from the previous week's attempt). I got 1:30 through the movie and it happened again! Sure enough, this DVD was scratched just as bad. You can imagine I was about to throw the damned thing out the window.
It's one thing to send a bad DVD, but to send an unplayable replacement for an unplayable DVD? That's just sad.
Other peeves have already been posted, but I'll reiterate: If you want a 2-DVD set, some of them are split so you have to rent each DVD separately. They don't have many copies of some movies, meaning that you have to wait and watch something else or wait for that movie to be returned to Netflix. Their turnaround time is horrible and they ship bulk mail (slow compared to 1st class).
I had a good run with Netflix, but they seem to be getting worse. I'm to the point that I'm going to try one of these other services out.
