any new transmeta chips
I've been wondering about how Transmeta is going to survive in the current market. Even though there chips are aimed at "appliance" type devices, they are still not very powerful when compared with other chips such as Intel. Does Transmeta have any new chips in the process of being designed, or do they hope that these will last a few years until they get around to designing even faster ones?

Re:Serious security concerns
I don't really think that, other than the court room (and maybe casino) concerns, it matters very much. The watch has a very low resolution, and is black and white. I don't think that if an "unwanted" picture was taken, it wouldn't be very easy to tell even who it was. It would be especially difficult to publicize the pictures on the web because of the low quality.
Remember, we all want nice, high-res pr0^H^H^H pictures when surfing the web.

gameboiy scope
I was at an electronics store the other day, and I saw a magazine (Elektor, Oct 2000) with an article about a new use for a gameboy. Basically, you plug in this cartridge, and connect cables to it, and you gameboy becomes a hand-held oscilloscope! I found a website about it, which also has a ROM image available for download if you want to try it out on an emulator! Pretty cool if you ask me...

mir may be getting too old...
I'm wondering how many years that Mir has been up in space. It seems that there are just too many problems with it, and the Russian government could better spend their money by building a new space station or something than trying to maintain Mir. But I'm probably wrong...

Re:True, and also....
Although I personally think that Slackware is a superior distro to RedHat, you have to look at it from the corporate point of view. When I first decided to try linux, I went to a local computer store where they had a bunch of those "budget" CDs, and looked over the options for linux. The two main ones were Redhat and Slackware. I, being unexperienced with linux at the time, chose redhat, because I simply liked the name better! CEO's wouldn't like to run a business dependent on something called "Slackware". Plus, the corporate support that Redhat offers probably is another plus in using them, but on purely technical merits, I think that slackware would be the best choice.
Of course, others would like to debate that with me...

Re:bandwidth
This seems like a good solution, but there are several problems (that probably could be worked out). First, when someone gets on Gnutella, a bunch of people have to send databases to them (this would be done automatically by a client). It comes down to the same problem. All these databases being transferred every time someone logs on will clog up bandwidth just as badly, if not worse, than it is now. Also, there is the issue of keeping the databases up to date. Everytime someone logs off or deletes a file, the databases need to be updated, taking up even more bandwidth, or else the search feature on Gnutella will be more like an out-of-date search engine.

bandwidth
I have tried Gnutella several times. Although it may be "better" than Napster in some ways, I still have found that it is harder to learn how to use, and it eats up bandwidth. The more people that are using the system, the more people there are sending searches to your computer. It slows everything down.
I think the bandwidth problem should be fixed first. A mid point has to be found betweena centralized server that databases all the files, and everyone sending the searches to everyone else. Of course, many people like Gnutella especially for the fact that it is completely decentralized. This coulc be a tough problem to fix.

Since they're not the firstWell really since we got Sega, RIAA, and DC all sending letters to people with certain content on their websites I think this calls for a new program. This will take from the Big Buisness a list of words or links to specific files. The program takes those words and does searches over at Google. Gets the results and grabs those webpages. If should any of those should contain the 'Content' then the program would do a lookup of the webaddress in the whois database and compile a list of contact information. Once this is done the file is automatically emailed to a specific email address (The lawyers?) and from there C&D letters are then mailed to the websites. This would of course be gpl'd so we can extend the product til l we have C&D 2000 which formats the letters prints them out (with postage) and are mailed out by the lawyers secretary. So whose with me on this one?

Re:NeXTLinux?
Mac OS X beta is a *joke* if you try to load it. The nice window shadows eat all your CPU, and more than a few dozen of windows is not realistic on a 384Mb machine.
Huh? I have it running on a 192Mb machine, and the only time it ever gets sluggish is
when it's loading the "Classic" environment (which I'd expect.) Seriously, I've got Internet Explorer, Omniweb, Macster, AppleMail (the spiritual heir of NeXTMail, natch) all running, and the box isn't even breathing hard. -

- Some documentation has been found that indicates the original 13th amendment dissapeared some three or four years after its publication. It was replaced, of course, with the modern 13th amendment. I don't recall exactly what it was that it was about, so if anyone has heard about this, please update (:

More recent research summarizedAs others have pointed out, this article from New Scientist isn't really that new.
More recently, there was a nice summary of research done over at Medscape which I discussed at my website. Since I'm an oncologist and an electrical engineer, I happen to have a keen interest in the issue from both sides.
If you take a look at my comments on the matter, you may find some food for thought. Basically, this sort of radiation may well pose a threat to our health, but it may do so at such a low rate and take so long to show effects that it may not even matter.
Look at smoking: if you smoke, you have a 7000% increased risk of developing some sort of aerodigestive cancer (oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, lung, etc.) as well as a much higher risk of cervical cancer in women, increased risk of skin cancers, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, yadda yadda yadda. That data was easy to find and tease out due to the incredible rarity of these tumors in nonsmokers.
However, now you're talking about much more rare tumors, and not a very large rate of increased risk. You don't even need statistics to see that smoking has a high association with cancer, but when you look at human tumors that only affect 1 in 100,000 people, then try to see if the rate is 2 in 100,000 among those exposed (or, as is more likely, 1.1 in 100,000 among those exposed) you are in a different world. You will need amazingly large populations in order to show a statistically significant difference of even 100% higher risk. And then, even if you do, your research is subject to criticism because you aren't going to be able to do a randomized trial. All retrospective, cohort, or other nonrandomized trials can be picked apart by either the phone manufacturers or consumer interest groups (the two sides, as I see them, in this debate).
In the end, you also have to ask yourself if it matters to you. I know lots of patients who continue to smoke because they just damn like it, and forget trying to get them to quit. They'd literally rather get another cancer than give up their favorite habit. Lots of cell phone (or insert your favorite high tech device here) users will just say to hell with it and continue to use the devices. After all, I still love to ride motorcycles, even after working in an ER.
;-) -
Re:Enduser bandwidth doesn't have to hurt servers. You know when phone rates drop with the big long distance carriers people don't really save money. The reason being, they talk LONGER. They end up spending the same about the same amount of money. So if you apply that same logic. The TIME COST of downloading something becomes less so they will spend the same amount of time downloading but it will just be more things.

any up to date mirrors
I searched for iso images of 7.2 beta, but couldn't find the new ones on metalab , linuxberg, or linuxiso.org. The linux-mandrake.com site seems
/.ed, to make it worse. How long would it take to get this new iso propagated? I don't think it would be a very good idea to post any mirrors in comments right now, for obvious reasons.

Good: I used PayPal to pay the good folks at dyndns.org for my hostname.
Bad: cancelling the Palm service (the only other time I used it).
Bad: no international customers. I am owed money by a guy in England. I will let you know when I cave in and have him send me a cheque, because that will be the day before PayPal start their overseas service.

Freeserve Unlimited is via Energis, Not BTWhiteWash wrote: FreeServe offer their deal through the use of BT's SurfTime service, ergo, it is still being controlled by BT
Sorry matey but that's a bunch of arse. Freeserve do offer an off-peak unmetered scheme via BT Surftime (limited to weekends and 6pm-8am) but their peak/off-peak (ie. any time of day) unmetered scheme is via Energis.
With Unlimited Freeserve Time (the Energis service) you pay a minimum of 10 pounds per month. As well as getting unlimited Internet usage, you can also make long distance voice/fax calls at a discount up to your 10 quid (if you want to make more, you can, but you pay extra).
Unlimited Freeserve Time has the following restrictions:
- All internet calls via this service are disconnected after 2 hours even if you're in the middle of a huge download. Which is what the godess created resumable download managers for. You can redial and get straight back on instantly, but you'll have a new dynamic IP address.
- It's for modems and 64kbps ISDN only. You can't multilink devices, so if you're using ISDN you can't use 128kbps (you can't even multilink one unmetered 64kbps channel to another pay-per-minute 64kbps channel). Multilink was originally supported, but was dropped last month.
- You must have a BT phone/ISDN line (even though the call routing is via Energis- but you don't need a SurfTime upgraded exchange, any exchange will do).
Yup, I'd hardly call that "unlimited" either, but it's good enough for me- my 'phone bill has gone down from 80 quid a month + rental to 10 quid + rental in one fell swoop. Neat.
Combine a 64kbps ISDN line, Unlimited Freeserve Time, auto-redialling software and a dynamic domain name plus a bit of socket/port wizardry and you too can remote control your PC from the office or run FTP/web servers etc.
Readers might like to know that the NTL offering, unlike Freeserve, doesn't support ISDN at all, not even 64kbps.
Find out more on freeserve.help.isdn .

Re:Great resource!
I'm not a pro, but I have become more and more inclined to write pages that actually conforms with the standards, most notably HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS1, and go on to validate the stuff. If the browsers can't handle that, *$%^#* them. And, browsers can't handle that...
For my personal site, this is the approach I took. I tried doing this with a company site, but Netscrape's f*cked-up handling of CSS (even in v4.x, which is inexcusable) necessitated the creation of a second, parallel site that would display acceptably in Netscrape. (How many sites do you know that are perfectly viewable in Lynx, but give Netscrape fits? To see how an HTML 4.01- and CSS1-compliant site looks in Netscrape, try this link.)
Fortunately, a makefile and some sed and awk scripts do the conversion automatically...I still have only one source tree to maintain for the site.

Merely denying cookies, I suspect, isn't going to hit anybody's wallet. It's still a good idea from a standpoint of them not being able to follow you as you move about the Web, but the people who make money from banner ads are probably counting the number of downloads of a particular banner. As long as your browser is still grabbing the ads, all they need to do is crunch their server logs to determine who gets paid.
To stop this, you'll need an ad filter. Squid-redir works well under anything that can run Squid. If you're looking for something a little easier to set up and you're running Win9x, there's WebWasher.
(I have a more comprehensive list of sites for squid-redir to block here.)

Re:No I'm not
Anytime that something gets even the hint of organization or recognition, people will try to jump to the head of the class.
Yeah I suppose so, some people such as Vladinator take the whole "hidden" troll forum kind of thing waaay too seriously as if it were some kind of massive conspiracy. It's not like we're doing it to be 31337, but some people think that if they try and "out" us or hassle us it makes them cool for pissing us off.
When you've gone through the trouble to put together a HOWTO, even in jest, it helps the thing grow.
As with all of my trolling, the roots for that came out of being very bored at work. It, along with the troll archive, are up at my website
:)And the only reason I picked you is because you are a known troll and the first one I came across.
Yeah, I don't use this account much anymore because it has become known as a troll account, even though it's not - I've never used this account to troll or post shit. *sigh* Can't really blame anyone but myself I suppose
:( ... but then again I hate trying to discuss something when you know at least person talking is just bullshitin' to piss you offYeah, but there have been some great points raised during the course of trolling and I can honestly say I've learnt a lot. Forcing people to defend a belief makes them explain it which helps everyone to understand it...

Re:I think we all know the truth.
Evidence: Notice the sharp increase in bright, flashing advertising recently? Like the "B12" ad I am viewing right now...
Actually, I hadn't. Ad-blocking software is a wonderful thing.

Re:CSS
W3C is not always too slow. Take CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). How many browsers even implement CSS2, never mind extending it?
I think I'm running into this problem right now with a website that I'm reworking to be more standards-compliant. (It was originally created with frames for formatting and lots of text-containing graphics with no ALT tags. Browsing it with Lynx shows just how woefully deficient it is.) I have a reworked (but still not finished) main page up (if you want to see what I'm doing, check out http://salfter.dyndn s.org/www.thejewelers.com/index-html4.html that works fine in IE 5.01, but Navigator 4.7 completely ignores the associated CSS positioning info. W3C's HTML and CSS validators say the page is OK, and some other HTML validators (such as NetMechanic and even the Netscape-controlled Web Site Garage) have said the same thing. Web Site Garage's browser-compatibility check even said the design was OK for Navigator 4.x. Actually viewing it with the different browsers says something different.
(Just got Mozilla M16 installed under Win98...it renders things a little differently than IE, but it's comparable to IE. Much better than Navigator 4.7. I tried installing Mozilla under Linux to get it running on the metal instead of under VMware (which is where I run Win98 and IE), but the installer segfaulted. The box is a 450-MHz K6-III with 256 megs of RAM and SuSE Linux 6.3, which ought to be enough to run anything.)

Re:Electric-only isn't currently viable. Not viable in Canada? Where do you get that from? There are 5 EV's on the road every day here in Ottawa. And they're not based on the National Research Council. They're based on the fact that Ottawa has a large community of retired and active engineers who realize how simple it is to build an electric car.
For example, my car has about 500 less moving parts than its gasoline eqivalent. And I have no:
- starter system
- lube system
- cooling system
- air system
- exhaust system
- rotation governer system
Instead, I have simply:
- a charging system
Real simiple.

RealityWhy do we still use gasoline?
Beats me!
I got tired of it last year. I built an electric Miata for my own use. You can see picture of it here and here [That's the Corel building in the background.]If you live in North America outside of California, and you want to drive an electric car, your choices are:
- buy a modified Geo Metro from Selectria (a good car!)
- build your own
I'd encourage anyone who can, to invest in an electric car. It's way better on the environment than any other form of currently available vehicle. [The Honda Insight is a close second: 80mpg and almost no CO emissions].

some slashcode sitesI don't know of any other open-sourced sites (this is the point of your post). I don't think that website code is as likely to be under the GPL because it typically isn't distributed. If someone comes up with good code, the don't distribute it, they use it on their own website.
Anyone with a little perl knowledge can go a long way towards making a slashcode site into a customer support, file download, or of course a news and events website.

Re:We're not seeing the death of music salesHeh, I'm the same way, but I ended up going a step further.
I have downloaded very few MP3s from Napster/Gnutella/Whatever. What I have done is converted my entire (250+) CD collection to MP3s. Then, I set up a streaming MP3 radio station (or, depending on your tastes, a *steaming* MP3 radio station).
I initially did this so I could listen to my entire collection from work. Until you try it, you have no idea what a rush it is to be able to put 2 weeks of continuous music on random.
At that point, I thought "Hey, I'm already streaming this stuff off, why not let other people listen?", so I put my station up to the public, using Live365 to rebroadcast. Then I got tired of having to rely on my Windoze machine staying up to be able to stream, so I set up icecast (GPL'd implementation of the shoutcast server), and grabbed this cool library called libshout, and wrote a small perl script to send my music data out.
Suddenly, not only am I releasing a GPL'd tool for streaming MP3s, but this has turned into a full-blown hobby. And let me tell ya, if you thought putting 2 weeks of music on random was cool, releasing your first free software on Freshmeat is quite a rush.
:)In the last 2 months, I have spent close to $300 on new CDs to add to my "radio station" lineup. Previously, I think I spent maybe $10 or $20 every couple of months on new CDs.
Plus, I write music as a hobby, and those songs are part of my lineup as well, so as the station gets more popular, my music is exposed to more people. I don't charge for my music, people are welcome to download it for free to do with as they please, but I like knowing that people are listening to (and hopefully liking) my music.
All in all, I think the record companies have done quite well by me.
:wq! -
Re:I'm not really sure it is that possible now..
If you look at all the proprietary operating systems, their community is very different from the BSD/Linux community.
Even the BeOS-community which seem to be rather enthusiastic is still mostly closed source.
As another example, consider the Apple II community...due to the age of the hardware involved (last new design hit the market in '88, last Apple II rolled off the assembly line in '93...or was it '92?), you're dealing with an even smaller niche than with anything that runs on modern hardware. You can almost always count on a flamewar in progress in comp.sys.apple2 regarding 15- or 20-year-old software up on FTP sites...not even just for software from the few companies from that period that are still around in some form or other (someone like Broderbund or Activision), but also from long-dead companies that just disappeared (someone like Epyx or Muse). The few people who are still coding today for the II also seem to be inordinately occupied with how much money they might be able to squeeze out of a project, even though they know it's been pretty much impossible for years now to code for the II as your day job.
FWIW, the last two releases I've done for the Apple II have been GPL'd. One was a digital-audio player for the 8-bit IIs that I open-sourced in 1992. The more recent one was a DHR character generator (no link at this time) that provided an easy way to mix graphics and text under BASIC. A more significant open-source release was GNO, a mulitasking command-line shell for GS/OS. Beyond my two programs and GNO, I can't think of any other open-source releases for the Apple II in recent years (public-domain software excluded because of the way derivative works can be made closed).

Re:Ready the opt-out link, captain!
I actually used to [redirect ad sites to localhost in
/etc/hosts], but a number of sites stopped working completely for me - instead of loading a broken image or whatever for the banner, I got a full page error message, and no web page.I've been using squid for a few months to filter out ads and keep cookies from being set; it's worked really well. It hasn't broken any sites that I can recall, and it's cut out most of the clutter and third-party cookies. You still need to check periodically for third-party cookies as new ad servers are put online, but I've gotten most of the current sites loaded into it. It even strips out the annoying host-navigation frames put up with sites hosted by the likes of Xoom and AOHell.
Here's some info on configuring squid as an ad-blocker. My list of blocked sites is here. (I've tweaked the redirector script to support a NULLHTML tag that causes a file containing "<html></html>" to be returned...it's a simple hack, and I don't know squat about Perl.)

Look also at http://ziplok.dyndns.org/msmith/SMPng/.
That doesn't work right now; I don't know if that machine and its HTTP server are being kept up 24/7 (the machine is pingable, but it refuses connections to port 80) - if not, it might be worth looking into putting it somewhere else as well. (Or does that machine have a dynamic IP address, and is ns.dyndns.org not giving me its current IP address? The address it's giving me is a Pac Bell Internet ADSL address.)

Not too low...
Actually, it looks to have pretty good clearance up front. Besides, thats typically not too big a problem, just watch out for curbs.
I'm lower than that (See?) and have no problems up front w/ speed bumps, my exhaust is another story. :-(

Re:Compressing video and audio on the fly is a subAs my MP3 archive is 13 gig, I'd rather not almost double it by keeping 24kbit and 64kbit versions around as well.
What I'm doing is I've got a perl script to re-encode on the fly and broadcast it, sort of like liveice, but it supports multiple bitstreams (I assume it's like liveice, I've never been able to get liveice to work correctly).
I do like the live365mon however, playing with it right now. Of course, it thinks my server needs to be reset when it doesn't, but I think that's because I'm timing out to cgi.live365.com right now.
:)You can check my perl script to do the on-the-fly thing at defiance.dyndns.org. It's not as small tho'.
:)Of course, we're veering off topic a tad. Oh well.

Developing for WAP
Nearly all of the new WAP phones sold in the UK are WAP enabled now, consequently I got interested in this. I've been playing around with WAP for the last few days, I've set up a WAP site which grabs headlines from a dozen news sites (slashdot included), I've also got a translator and spell checker working. Anyway, if you wanna check it out : try http://aztech.dyndns.org in a WAP browser
It's quite a good technology to work with, it's somewhat limited when on my Nokia 7110 phone though, due to the small screen and the 14.4kbps limit on GSM. I believe GPRS is being rolled out in a couple of months, so you will be able to get constant 100kbps access without having to dialin, all we need now it a decent colour display.
It's clever how they've got HTML -> WML on-the-fly, however things would be much easier if sites adopted xHTML, it can degrade much more gracefully than standard html. -
LaTeX Version
I am currently working on a LaTeX version of the documentation. Go to http://latakia.dyndns.org/~ruhl/playst ation/ to take a look. It is a work in progress, but every change I make will be mirrored on the site immediately (the magic of hard links!).
