Re:emojis....
In that particular case this is a politically correct update: gender neutral emoji, redhead emoji variants, real gun replaced by squirt gun,
...As for why emoji matter, I think it is just an instance of the bike-shed effect.
Small pictures are easy to understand, anyone can have an opinion about how a burger should look like. As a result, people talk a lot about it, even though it is trivial. Things like colorimetry, computer security and machine learning require some level of technical knowledge and people just leave that to the experts. -
Re:How the hell are gun emojis tied to violence?
It was implemented in iOS 5.0, in 2011 as a revolver. Care to try again?

Re:B-b-b-but GUNZ is SKEEERY!!
The only thing that stops a bad guy with an emoji is a good guy with an emoji.
Look! In the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's Levitating Businessman!

Re:How the hell are gun emojis tied to violence?
You are a fucking idiot, this is a new feature so of course there is no history.
"The Pistol emoji was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010."
You were talking about idiots?

And Microsoft goes the other wayhttp://blog.emojipedia.org/div...
And nobody cares.

Re:Change history Commrade? Da or Nyet?
The emoji is part of the unicode standard. You send U+1F52B [ http://emojipedia.org/pistol/ ], and each platform will display using it native font rending engine.
Yes they appear differently on different platforms. But also as they are unicode you can include them in URLs.
> If they changed the the thumbs up emoji to a goatse would it change in all the e-mails I sent to my boss in the past?
Same as if they changed all the Is to look like little dicks. Or if you changed the font on your bosses computer to a font that used pictures of dicks for each of the letters.

Re: yay more emojis
The pistol emoji shows up as a realistic handgun, with the exception of Microsoft who chose to display a toy ray gun

So long as "mother" is still a woman...
Oh, wait, "Mother" has already been replaced with "Parent 1"... Is there an emoji for that — and is it different from the symbol for "Parent 2"?
Here is the symbol for "family" — and, for one, am triggered by their definition:
A family unit, which is commonly represented as a father, mother, and one or two children.

Right to bare arms
You have a right to bear arms (U+1F4AA). And bare arms. So join a boxing club and put your fists (U+1F44A) to good use.

But a bomb is ok
because bombing and killing 100,000 of thousands into democracy is ok. http://emojipedia.org/bomb/

Re:frist post
Cakes aren't designed with the express purpose of killing things.
Bullshit argument indeed.
While talking about bullshit, care to explain this emoji and why Apple also has the most realistic depiction of it?

Re:frist post
Yes, I can definitely see how a rifle emoji would be threatening, but a dagger, crossed swords, skull and crossbones, a bomb , or even a pistol clearly aren't.
There's already a pistol emoji. There's no reason not to add a rifle emoji for completeness sake.

There's already a gun emoji.
On Apple iOS, no less. It's weird that they're ok with a pistol, but won't tolerate a rifle.

Banning weapons and other unpleasantries
So, removal of pistol-emoji is next? And swords and dagger? How about the mosque and the star-and-crescent — a majority of Muslims in the US today would prefer for Sharia to replace the Constitution.
If only we could have the unpleasant facts of life disappear by banning the symbols related to them...

Isn't there already a gun emoji?
There's already a gun emoji. Windows sidesteps the issue a bit by displaying it a cartoon raygun:

I think what Microsoft really needs to incorporate, is the transformational power of Emojis to liven up each BSOD into a masterpiece.

U+1F467 and U+1F419
Unicode has U+1F467 Girl and U+1F419 Octopus. If this were SoylentNews, I could show them inline, but Slashdot uses a code point whitelist because of past abuses of bidirectional control characters.

Re:Coren22's impersonation "APKolypse"
There's already an emoji for "You are all cows" (U+1F42E Cow Face). There's even one for "App appers app apps with apps" (U+1F4F2 Mobile Phone With Rightwards Arrow at Left). And there are plenty of faces for the integrated face system. But what would the hosts file emoji look like?

Re:slowpoke.jpg?
There already is a taco emoji. It's in Unicode 8.0.
And what does a taco emoji have to do with Taco Bell?
FWIW, anyone who's ever eaten at Taco Bell knows they already have an emoji.

What I really want though is a bat, there's two fucking rabbits, but no bat.
Unicode has a bat, but it has a ball.

Oh look, none of my otherwise up-to-date browsers display that glyph, despite it being from 2014. So what do websites have to do to give their users what they want (which is apparently emojis)? That's right, web fonts and/or Javascript libraries to render them.

Re:U+1F36B Chocolate Bar
If "apple" were to be included in UTF-8, it should be a generic apple-shaped fruit symbol, not the computer brand trademark.
Exactly: see U+1F34E Red Apple and U+1F34F Green Apple even in Apple's emoji font. They're encoded next to other foods. And instead of Twitter's logo, we get a generic U+1F426 Bird even in the Twemoji font.

Re:U+1F36B Chocolate Bar
That's why U+1F36B is a generic chocolate bar rather than a HERSHEY'S® bar.
Given that Hershey's is a disgusting concoction that barely resembles real chocolate I am happy that the emoji for a chocolate bar is generic.

Re:System not required
These are really high-tech sharks they're trying to detect. They can text:
The software [] is designed to gauge a level of probability that a shark -- defined as a two-meter, self-propelled object -- is nearby and could be configured to text a lifeguard.
But what would a shark text a lifeguard? The shark emoji isn't even in Unicode yet.

Re:Why emoji?
Not everyone speaks English or Chinese or Spanish.
Everyone recognizes stop sign, airport, pile of poop and other symbols. So communicating via pictographs is actually good. Even if it was incidental.
And many of them recognize this as well.
