Confessions of a 30 year old Gamer
I have been gaming my entire life. I played the original NES growing up, discovered MMOs in the form of MUDs in the early 1990s, and have subsequently played every game that ever got above an 8 rating in any credible gamer mag. But for the last two years of my life, I have been addicted to, and have played only, one game. This game is an HL2 mod called "Empires". Because it is a mod, the development team could do some pretty risky things, and have created a fascinating blend of first person shooter and real time strategy. It is simply the best, most engaging, hardest game I have ever played. Trailer on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zis1qmlHdtk Official site: http://www.empiresmod.com/

Anyone seen EmpiresMod?
For those with Steam/HL2, check out EmpiresMod, http://empiresmod.com/media.php.
Very much like C&C, but with many FPS aspects. You can run around on foot as a grenadier/rifleman/engineer/scout, or drive a tank/jeep/apc, or even be the commander of the operation (overhead view, place buildings, give attack commands).
The game is like mixing C&C with Team Fortress Classic, very fun, addicting, and best of all, free! Game is surprisingly well polished, with several active servers. Different game modes and maps keep things interesting. The game is slightly complicated, but if you start off as one class type, you'll quickly catch on and be able to move on to bigger and better things.

Re:The game is cancelled
Try out http://www.empiresmod.com/ it's a Half Life 2 mod that is an FPS/RTS hybrid.

Re:Aww.
Empires mod implemented something very much like that: http://www.empiresmod.com/ Fun game, haven't played it in a while though.

Re:Queue half-life jokes
Try Empires 2.0 http://www.empiresmod.com/ Contemporary based without the major difference in build strategy, but very good nonetheless.

EOD: The mod thats better then the game (BF:V)
Not quite sure how EA got BFV so wrong when one of the best mods for 1942 was EOD.
EOD imho is the best mod for 1942 with DC and FH joint 2nd.
EOD just had/has an amazing feel to it, the atmosphere was intense, the game play was better then the original... (could go on and on here but i wont). So what do EA do, they go lets make a vietnam based game wich i though was going to be awsome but no they got all the worest bits of the orginal and smashed them all togther and relased a game thats not worth of the title BETA. They should have looked closer at EOD and understood what made that such a good mod.
About other mods for 1942 there is the Empires mod http://www.empiresmod.com/ wich is abit like Command and Conquer as in you can build bases to build tanks and planes ect. Only had a play single player and it looked intresting but cannot say for sure without trying it with more people -
Genre bending . . . a new trend?
With Natural Selection, Uskaarj, Unreal Annihilation, Warcraft III FPS mod, and Empires all blending or totally converting between game genres and/or engines, there seems to be an interesting trend of "breaking the rules" or using a game very differently than it was originally intended. Is this a gimmick, first notably commercialized by Savage or do you think it will keep its place on the game-store shelves?
