    Maybe the best example is something that hasn't happened in the Linux world, though: a widely used high-level language.

    Here's another one: the vast majority of FOSS projects are built with recursive make + GNU autoconf/automake. There are much better systems available (e.g. scons but probably some more recent ones) but picking an obscure build system means people are less likely to install your software, so none of them really get enough adoption.

    You can use GotMail with a regular M$ hotmail account. I haven't actually tried it, but it has been around for a while.

    Can you check your hotmail account with a POP-client?

    Not directly, but you can use gotmail to fetch it in a similar fashion to fetchmail.

    I was using hotmail to correspond with someone I met online. After sending hundreds of messages to each other we finally met and started to date. I wanted to abandon hotmail, but I couldn't figure out a way to download all of her messages. I came across a solution called gotmail.

    It's a little slow, but it works like a charm. Who gives a damn about pop3?

    A while ago I found a nifty perl script called 'gotmail' which logs onto hotmail and fetches your messages to your user mailbox or fowards them to another email account depending on your prefrence. I have it setup as a cron job, and it works very well. I don't know if it handles attachments, the docs don't say, and I haven't bothered to test it.

    Try Gotmail. It lets you download all of your mail without having to go near the web site (*big* increase in speed there)... basically letting you use your hotmail account as an anonymous forwarding address. ;-)
