Re:Guesstimates?
Well Im playing the MMORGs Eternal Lands which has clients for Linux, Mac and Windows.
It's free to play but you can support the game by buying items in the EL shop. So yes it exists MMORGs for Linux.

Perhaps you could stop with the "No games for Linux" BS already as you obviously have your head up your ass. -
Re:Sounds to me...
He also doesn't seem to realize that a single player RPG is very different from a MMORPG. For example:
Trust your ability to balance things later. That?s the easy part.
No. It most definitely is not. Example: I'm a relatively new member of the dev team at Eternal Lands, an open source, free (as in beer) MMORPG. Early on, the dev team had added in a sword worth an utter fortune to an NPC. It could be crafted, but took an obscenely high level to craft. Eventually (after some similar problems on a smaller scale), the devs came to the realization that once people reached that level, the market would be flooded: people would make those swords in bulk, sell them to the NPC, and completely destroy the game's economy. Fixing it got on their TODO list, but wasn't a top priority item. There was so much else to develop, and hey, nobody was near that manufacturing level yet. A minor oversight, though: you can get blessings from your god (including the manufacturing God) to temporarily up your levels -- all for just a 50 gold fee. The high level manufacturers started making and selling the swords in bulk and threw the economy out of whack.
Now it's out of whack. How do you fix it? Not only do the manufacturers now have obscene amounts of money, but through their purchases, they've messed up the amount of money that others have. Do you just roll back the entire game to a few months prior? Good way to lose almost your entire player base. It took a long time for them to rebalance the game, and they lost a number of players in the process.
In short: NEVER trust your ability to rebalance things later. That's the HARD part. Plan everything to death before you hook it in. -

Open source MMORPGs
There's still room for open source, or free to play games. Have you seen Planeshift http://www.planeshift.it/ or Eternal-Lands http://www.eternal-lands.com/. The first one is fully open source, the second has only OS client. Of course none of them have hundreds of thousands players, but... check them yourself. Regards

Argh!!! There are PLENTY of games (2d/3d alike)
Unreal Doom3 HalfLife2 Enemy Territory Cube Savage Stratagus Freeciv Wesnoth NeverwinterNights Tribes2 Vendetta YohohoPuzzlePirates Civilization AlphaCentauri FrozenBubble Pydance Teg DeusEx BZFlag XPlane Flightgear Torcs Scorched3d Pingus Lincity Tuxcart Torcs Quake 123 VegaStrike Railz LBreakout Armagetron PPRacer Vendetta and there more impressive titles under development.
Here's my opinion. What "we" need are fewer people saying we need more games, and more people recognizing some of the excellent offerings we have right now. If we support these games (even with nothing more than just a little recognition), the companies WILL notice, see us as a market, and want to cater to us. -
Eternal Lands
Another free MMORPG - I played it for a while, but the economy is a bit screwy, because cactus is extremely valuable yet easy to harvest. It's fun, though - http://www.eternal-lands.com/. Oh, and don't forget about runescape... urgh.

Re:Windows only?
There is Eternal Lands which has a native Linux version as well.

Re:Open Source MMO
PlaneShift is a pretty nice open source MMORPG, it's still in development and I don't really know about the current userbase though. Check http://www.planeshift.it
Eternal-Lands is also looking good and should be farily playable http://www.eternal-lands.com
I don't really know about the current userbase but I'm about to try it again :)
Also there is Arkanae https://arkanae.dev.java.net/- I don't really know anything about that one though.
Then you have WorldForge which I really haven't had any luck with, and I don't really think it is in a playable state anyway (http://www.worldforge.org).
In addition to those you have http://www.genecys.org/ - don't really know much about that one either.
So theres a few going on :)
