Re:Need proof?Don't believe IRC is evil? Just try logging on with an even remotely female-sounding nick sometime.
I hacked together a perl bot using the eliza module, created a sexy sounding female persona on a talker (chat program a little bit like IRC) and logged the bot onto it.
The results were rather amusing.

hmmI created a chatroom robot from an eliza perl module, gave it a suggestive sounding female name and ran it amok on a talker swamped with oversexed-fourteen year olds.
The code and the resulting comedy confusion it provided was promptly posted online.
Thank god I don't live in the USA!

Other useful error codesI find the error codes generated by here rather enlightening.

Yes, I did have something to do with it. Sorry.

Re:prior art posted here?Didn't somebody set up an ICQ bot posing as female to flirt with people, then put the logs on the web a long time ago? I can't seem to dig it up.
I don't know about that but i wrote one using the eliza perl module and made it connect to an ewtoo talker well known for having a lot of over-sexed 14 year olds on there.
The page and code is here. You can read the log directly here.
It is rather amusing.

Nice spin Slashdot..
..the BSA hires the Federal Marshals as mercenaries to help ensure compliance with their extortion..
Well, thanks for that nicely impartial journalist attitude there. Its amazing what a simple line can do to affect the inflection of a story.
Instead, how about..
'the BSA hires Federal Marshals to ensure the hard work and effort by its members is not stolen by parasitic scum who steal like common thieves.'
I develop software for a small company. I'm quite lucky to be where I am now, doing what I want to. I also work on OSS as a hobby.. (Such as a perl port of PG+ that runs Uberworld.) Trust me, if ever I meet someone offering me a 'warez' copy of something I wrote I certianly won't be giving them a big cheery grin.. -
Here's a Mini
http://howto.ewtoo.org/show.cgi? howto=autoconf.txt. It's not bad, but it doesn't go too in-depth. I found it enough to get started with though.
Also the user manual for autoconf, at http://www.gnu.org/manual/autoconf-2.13 is very good, once you are a little more familiar with the tools.

Re:Power in Languagelet alone a "spod", which might be a word particular to Great Britain, having only negative connotations.
I've seen it used on chat sites (at least the EW-Too based sites I used to frequent.) Spod was someone who spent far too much time online, often used in a friendly way. "G'day Bron you spod you. Thought I might find you here", or "See you're spodding again" type of thing.
To get back to the topic, I think that it's all about the context. If a word is used with the intention of hurting, it hurts. If it's being used between members of the group it refers to (frequently in an empowering way) it can have a bonding effect. "Wow, glad to find another geek here - thought I'd never find anyone worth talking to amongst these airheads".
Some words are used with the intention of hurting more than others, like nigger, wog, etc. Using these is generally a bad idea unless you know the audience doesn't mind.
By the same token, if someone uses a word that's offensive to you, it doesn't mean they're trying to hurt you. People often lose their sense of homour on sensitive issues. We all need to laugh at ourselves and lighten up occasionally.
Bron "and the stereotypes are usually funny and partially true anyway" Gondwana.
