Re:Why so many social justice articles here at /.?
Oh yes, and as for the feminist conspiracy, it's not as though it's a big secret: https://eyebeam.org/events/art...
That's only one area of many where feminists try to rewrite wikipedia en masse to reflect their ideology.

Re:It probably won't last another 4 years
I would hope with environmentalism being pushed as the trendy thing to do that concepts such as Reware will become more mainstream. We really have more money than we know what to do with.
We really should do this for better reasons (i.e. other than it being trendy), but whatever gets the ball rolling...

How cool would it be to donate old devices to schools and lets students tinker around with them? -
Donate it to free software projects
There are a number of projects making realy interesting use of outdated hardware, this project in particular focuses on taking outdated palms and cell phones, getting linux mobile distro's and media applications working well with them:

Re:Not a bad idea though
A phased millimeter-wave radar array with sufficient range would not only let you find a sniper in a building, but it would let you know what kind of rifle he was holding and for that matter whether he was circumcised or not and what parts of his body were pierced.
It would also let you know if he had a radar-seeking countermeasure. You would be able to tell by the tunnel with the light.I don't think bears would know the difference between a cruise missile and, say, a 747.
But what if they were bears that could shoot lasers out of their eyes. That would be so frickin' AWESOME.

Resources for Makers/Builders/hightech DIYers
The first thing to realise there are plenty of technology related hobbyists around the world, although most are not high profile and some may be different very different demographics than yourself.
Some (hobby) groups to consider looking towards for ideas and help include: woodworkers, metalworkers (hobbyists using micromills and mini-lathes from TaigTools and Sherline, etc.), model railroads, model aircrafts (static and RC), robotics, amateur radio (ham), 2600, LUGs, and Artist Run Centres/Communities

Re:Realism IS a style!
a post-modern abstractist style FPS
Actually, it's already been done. At a show called INSTALL.EXE a few years back at the Eyebeam Gallery in NYC, they had a number of abstract interactive installations (to call them 'games' might be stretching the term a bit) based on the source for Wolfenstein-3D and Quake. Here's a review.
