EyeOS 2.0
I'm just waiting for EyeOS 2.0 (http://eyeos.org/) to come out. Look at the preview of EyeDocs (http://blog.eyeos.org/2009/10/09/introducing-eyedocs-2/)
... and with the right configuration it can save OpenDocument files.Best of all...it's self hosted!

Re:Home server +ssh
How about an entire php multiuser webbased OS?
I keep one going on my server, and it actually is very nice.
-
Free Web OS like EyeOS and others...
There are many free Web OS (as I understand them) out there. For example, EyeOS at http://eyeos.org/en or this other: http://www.oos.cc/login.html YouOS https://www.youos.com/ (now closed
:( ) and one from the MIT whose URL I can't recall now... These project are 2 or more years old. If the new Web OS is just this old concept, I think like they're just shouting buzzword (again). -
Re:Finally
take a look at http://eyeos.org/ and tell us what do you think

Re:Yes, why post this?

Why only applications?

Re:Good luck...Hell even a web-based OS with online file storage.
OK, here you go: EyeOS

Prior Art?Wouldn't these count for Prior art... I didn't get to read the whole patent (have to run for work)
but it seems to me that to many companies are using obviousness in their claims and are trying to
patent the 'stack' of ideas, which is really obvious given that they are just using standard tools
to make a product so why make claims like this in the patent:
75. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 74, wherein receiving said given client request according to said web services protocol includes receiving a document encapsulated according to a version of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), wherein contents of said given client request are included in said document and formatted according to a version of XML.
Honestly, why not try to pattent using C++ for making applications...
I'm not sure how much of this is covered but here might be some Prior Art:

Re:YouOS
Actually, I spent about 5 minutes using YouOS and was disgusted. It seems like a novelty item, not something that you can actually put to use. Besides, Online Operating Systems aren't really anything new. There are several out there.EyeOS seems better than YouOS... no pun intended?

eyeOS is a free PHP app that does this
Check it out eyeOS, its open source also
:) -
Not quite new, but
YouOS has been around for a while, and it's part of a growing trend of online desktops (I refuse to refer to them as "Online OSes", because they're simply a desktop page that launches programs, an alternative to Explorer at best).
If you're interested in this area, check out also:
FlyaKiteOSX
the 30Boxes Webtop
EyeOS
Computadora (in Spanish, even though .de ?)
Goowy (it's in Flash though)
And of course, because this is Slashdot, I couldn't go without mentionning that Google is probably preparing their own, since their recent focus on releasing equivalents of desktop applications online (Notes, Excel, Word, Calendar, Picasa, etc) :) -
EyeOS
This is pretty similar to EyeOS ( http://eyeos.org/ ), which runs on any web server and lets you use apps (IM, RSS, web browser, games, etc) in it, change the background etc. I've got this running on my web server, and if nothing else it's great when I want to check the
/. RSS while away from home :P -
EyeOS
YouOS is just sounds like a rip off of eyeOS.

Re:Next Up: A Google WebOS?
Other people are pointing out that this theory is flawed in that Google needs to get into hardware architecture or you always need an internet connection to do work, etc, but I don't think it's so far fetched. I'm always connected to the internet. It would be great if google made an online OS that runs in any modern browser. It doesn't have to be a huge leap from what they offer now either. Just a way to organize all of your gmail services and consolidate them into one "desktop." Have big buttons for gCalendar, gMail, gSpreadsheet, gWord, search, etc and have the ability to drag and drop stuff from e-mail to calendar for instance and it would be enough for me and probably millions of other people. eyeOS is already working on a desktop for the web.

Re:Pulling a Xerox
Opera might me standards-compliant with ECMA, and that means it has less features in the language then Firefox and IE (stuff like designMode which is vital for proper real-world apps).
Give EyeOS a try. It shows some decent real-world apps. -
and it's now called eyeOS
