So if you're going to get the code just to look at it, I suggest using your mom's house or an internet cafe! Or if you know an avid Eve Online player that you don't really like, you could hack into their wireless connection and download it that way. Not that I would condone it...
> So XP is definitely on the way out, and [...] Vista is coming in. That means more sales for MS
Not really. Every time they sell a copy Vista pre-loaded it means they are selling one less copy of XP. If my calculations are correct they should end up with the same number of sales overall.
Ah yes, good point. The 1MB of URLs per month that will be sent to Google will really eat into my unlimited bandwidth. I'd better download the "small" file of known phishing sites instead. I can't imagine that there could be that many URLs on it. 640 scam sites should be enough for anyone.
I know when I work that the system administrators are watching what I am doing: checking which ports I have open, which websites I visit and maybe even sometimes reading my mail. It seems like this is normal these days. Good luck with the strike, but I doubt it will change anything.
That's been one thing that really bugs me about Linux. I'm fed up of having to use horrible outdated editors like emacs and vi. Now finally I can use a decent editor without having to dual-boot.
How should those people be handled? Is Piracy still piracy if it's the same version as what was there before?
Yes, it's absolutely piracy.
We need to be more tough on pirates and terrorists. In the music industry we use fines of $100,000 per 5MB of illegal pirated contraband. This should be increased to $500,000 per 5MB for Windows because it is such an important piece of software. Since Windows is about 1 GB in size that means we should be fining them about a gajillion dollars per theft. If you have multiple pirated copies then we must treat it as a commercial operation, and then clearly we are talking about *much* larger numbers.
Once the fine has been paid the pirates should then be sentenced to death by hanging. This is a good way to prevent re-offending.
I know that some of you think this is a little harsh but we must remember what the world was like when we were too gentle with pirates and terrorists. Do you want events like 9/11 to become a regular occurrence?
> Because they would have passed the cost on to consumers.
No, they wouldn't. Business aim to charge the most money that the customers are prepared to pay. If Microsoft are able to raise the price of their product and still sell it they would have done it already and made more money.
The extra cost from the fines would have cut into their profits and so it is the shareholders that would be harmed, not the end users.
Vista is actually selling quite well, and many people I know are using it without any complaints. Why are the good points about Vista never mentioned on Slashdot? It's always how great the Mac is or how great Compiz is...
> I know the copyright infringement != theft line is common around here, but please respond intelligently to issues raised by someone on the opposing side of an issue.
If you can't understand the difference between copyright infringement and stealing then it's better to keep quiet. Its pointless arguing the finer points of a legal argument with someone who doesn't even understand the basics of law.
> In a general sense, in the United States at least, distributing five or fewer copies of a song is protected by such things as (ta-da!) the Audio Home Recording Act.
This is why I always stop sharing a song when my share ratio reaches 1:1, although maybe 5:1 would be safe too.
> With China the new carbon dioxide emissions leader
The US is still winning by far if you look at emissions per capita, which is the more relevant figure. You would expect a country with twicce the population to give out about twice the emissions, everything else being equal.
It's not like it's that hard to tell your international friends how to set one up. There are already complete solutions that can be downloaded and installed with only a minimum of configuration (such as setting a password).
Once you have signed a contract, you are bound by that contract. Microsoft didn't have to change the details after it was signed. They did so only because they are a reasonable company. Norway should have read the contract before they signed it. If only they taught 'buyer beware' in schools the world would be a better place.
I saw them too and I enjoyed them. Now give me some karma as well.
I worked on a very similar project but now I can't remember what it's called.

Yes. In the same way 'ads' is short for 'adsvert' and 'abs' is short for 'absdominal muscle'.

...anti-Vista FUD.

Couldn't it be diverted from it's propaganda goals to also filter for malicious traffic?
You mean censorship? Propaganda is what you read on sites like Slashdot. Both are bad, but they are not to be confused with each other.
> You have three choices, nintendo ... xbox ... and finally the sony PS3,
You forgot one. There is the PS2 as well. It's a decent, fun system and you can still buy games for it. It's not to be totally ignored just yet.
Strawman and ad hominem.
I think it should be a standard footer to all summaries about copyright law to save us the effort of rewriting the same comment each time.

I would like there to be a list published of the people that bought RIAA CDs, thereby providing funding to these crooks.
