  1. I was hoping the pig was just dead.... but noooo. They had to reanimate the brain of a pig that had been slaughtered. Let's revive the brain for a bit so it can feel the phantom pain of a missing, body. We're either working toward Zombies or Necromancy. I think we should stop in either case. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to revive dead portions of the brain... but what if the brain damage is really just to protect the rest of the being?

  3. Linus: I'm going on vacation with family, leave me the f*** alone.
    Organizers: Is this the fam?
Linus: You understand, don't you? There's no other solution. You won't go away.
    Organizers: I will.
Linus: No, you won't. You're just *saying* you will! But then, after I don't kill you, you'll show up again. And you'll do something else to make everyone in my life think you are wonderful and I'm a schmuck. But I'm not a schmuck, Bob, and I'm not going to let you breeze into town and take my family away from me, just because you're crazy enough to be *fun*.

  14. Well, it looks like they should make an App for the Fire TV to replace YouTube.

I have Ad-Away from the F-Droid store, but I'm betting that my patched hosts file doesn't block them all.

If I had mod points, I would mod this informative.

If they simply used a robots.txt, and Google still scraped their site, they would be able to sue for hacking. They would also be able to use the DMCA to have the results removed.

Whether what Google did was ethical or not, it could have been prevented with 2 to 4 lines of code.

As for court orders, if their developers were competent enough to use a robots.txt file, they could have saved a ton of time/money/and all of our time reading about it on Slashdot.

  20. Walmart *could* compete with Amazon. They offer 2-day shipping, and have a seller marketplace... but that two day shipping is useless when the item isn't shipped for weeks.

Based on some of the things my Echo responds to.... I bet "Did you' in a strong accent could sound like "Echo" which is a trigger word.

My concern is that the Echo can only call other Echo users.... so my guess is that it was one of the other AWS enabled devices.

Unless one of them is a developer and was building something that could do that. I don't imagine such folks are immune to domestic disputes. I knew a girl once who was very intelligent, (probably could have put ProtaOS on a Raspberry Pi) but always made bad choices for her SO.

  23. Not Google Home on Google Home Ends A Domestic Dispute By Calling The Police (gizmodo.com) · · Score: 1

While I read the original story, and it noted that it wasn't Google Home, here is some interesting anecdotal thoughts that may or may not lead us to what the device actually was. (I really want to know for reason 1)

    1. an Echo can only call other Echos (to my disappointment - I want to use mine to do speaker phone calls)
    2. My Echo will randomly answer questions if something sounds anything like "Echo" which is my invocation word.
    3. I would imagine with a heavy accent "Did you" could sound like "Echo" to an Echo (or other AWS device, as this obviously must be)

Knowing that it's not a Google Home, and that an Echo can't make calls, means it could be one of the other devices. So....does anyone know of a voice activated personal assistant that can make calls? I know I can do OK Google calls from my Nexus 6P since I have Assistant working on it.

So, does anyone know of an AWS device that can make phone calls.

I wish we had more tech jobs around here. I'm always getting offers around my area (Syracuse) and housing is very affordable... but the pay isn't exactly great. On the other hand, I can afford to live here. There is also lots to do, I have the Adirondacks just a few hours North East, Finger lakes about an hour South West, hundreds of other parks and natural areas within that radius. All four seasons, so I get to hike, bike, sled, look at foliage, etc. The only thing that isn't really conveniently located is the Ocean.... but I'm OK with that. Can't have it all.
