Re:Minor correction
Although sounding a bit pedantic, the game was released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986. The cartridge version for the Famicom didn't get released until a few years later, well after the American NES version's 1987 release.
Who cares? She looks at least 25.... matter of fact, Zelda looks a *lot* older than 25. Did she have radical cosmetic surgery after she appeared in Terrahawks?

Strange answer: Terrahawks
Alternate answer: Heck, yes Zelda needs an "overhaul" if she looks like this.
Am I the only person here who grew up associating the name Zelda with the Terrahawks baddie and not some Nintendo character? Particularly as I wasn't even aware that "Zelda" was a real name at the time. Anyway, the two characters seem like chalk and cheese...
BINGO!.... that's your answer! Nintendo can refresh their "Zelda" series by replacing their Zelda with the evil-Martian-android-that-looks-like-a-really-old- person namesake from Terrahawks. It'll be worth it to see the expression on the Nintendo fanboys' faces alone.
And they can get Windsor Davies to do the voice for that spherical robot Sergeant-Major, and have a game of Xs and Os for the "Game Over" sequence (Anyone who hasn't seen Terrahawks will be wonder WTF I am rambling about now... do a search at YouTube if you're curious) -

Old News - 1983
This concept was already thought of and used in the 1983 (non-HIT) TV-series 'Terrahawks', as the 'Cubes from Zelda'. The Terrahawks was the not so successful successor to the well-known Thunderbirds series by the same creator. Thunderbirds @ imdb: http://imdb.com/title/tt0085099/ Cubes: http://www.fab1.net/t-hawks/a-craft.htm (on the image you can see them portray as a gun and a forcefield generator WHOA how'bout them apples?!)

I have a theory Zelda is behind this
A little terrahawk-ean to me..
I must say I was very impressed with the level of manouverability these little fellows had, Add solar pannels and a few bespoke cubes (video cubes, transmitter cubes, power cubes, chromatography cubes) and you would have a really kick ass space probe. Basic movement and navigation could 'easily' be controlled with in the cubes as a distributed network with a transmitter cube(possibly more than 1 for safty) to relay data back to the lander that would hold the larger transmitter and main computer to controll 'higher' brain functions such as locating interesting items seen through the video cubes.
The great advantage of this set up would be in the event the cubes lost signal with base they could re assemble them selves into a tower to reach over the obstical (ie a dune/bolder). If all the cubes were delivered in one big block in a lander they could assemble themselves according to the terrane they would have to navigate, short range cubes might opt out of having the additional transmitter cubes and return to base by simply reversing the path that got them to there destination and use a physical coupling to relay the data back tothe main probe. -
Re:Seen it before?
It also reminds me of the Zeroids, those spherical robots from the old SF puppet show Terrahawks.

The Deadly CUBES!
When combined, these cubes can form various deadly weapons!!
