Let's talk about saving lives.
In 2012 about 14000 people were murdered across the US. The death toll on the highways was roughly twice that much -- about 28000. The data is pretty conclusive that, as a risk factor, distracted driving is as bad as being drunk behind the wheel. So, while texting seems innocent enough on the face of it, when it is considered in the statistical aggregate as a contributor to premature mortality texting is a killer. The officer is arguably doing much to to save lives. As much as a homicide detective? Hard to say. But his contribution to public safety is not trivial. Good for him.

The only explanation is that the system is racist.
Oh, there are much simpler explanations, like the fact that 70% of black youths come from single parent households and that many of them are surrounded by criminal activity. Racism probably initiated that cycle of crime and broken families, but there is no clear evidence that it is still required or contributes significantly to these differences in outcomes.
Yeah, because a black person in a white neighborhood is likely to have someone go all Zimmerman on them.
Likely? You can take the FBI crime statistics and easily compute murder rates per 100000 population of each race:
black-on-black: 5.9
black-on-white: 1.1
white-on-white: 1.0
white-on-black: 0.07White on black murders are so ridiculously uncommon that a white neighborhood is probably the safest place for a black person to be. And the large difference between black-on-white and white-on-black rates shows that these differences aren't (just) due to lack of opportunity.
(Of course, Martin wouldn't have been counted in those statistics. But there were 326 justifiable homicide / self-defense killings; I can't find the race data for that, but even if they had been all white-on-black, it still wouldn't change the conclusion.)

If you won't go to jail for your beliefs, then they might not be that important to you.
Most of the major social movements, and you are hoping for a social movement, required confronting the state, and risking jail time. Civil rights in US easiest example, but Indian independence and anti-apartheid movement are others.
I know people who went to jail for their beliefs.

I'm ready to go to jail for my beliefs -- and I've confronted the authorities many times -- but I don't want to give up my life by doing something that is futile and won't work.
I know people who went down South to work in the Civil Rights movement in the U.S., and one of them got killed. I wish I had gone with them. I didn't realize then how important it would be.

The Communists taught them two important ideas: (1) You have to change the system. Incremental change will only make things worse. (2) The way to get something is to organize the people. And they taught people, like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, how to organize.
A lot of Communists left the party, and unfortunately went into the conservative movement, where they used the same techniques. When the Tea Party went to meet-your-Congressman meetings and shouted everybody else down, that was exactly what the Communists used to do.
Unfortunately, we don't have anything like the Communist Party around any more to show people how to organize. Occupy Wall Street was a good try, but we don't have that culture any more.
Now we just had a whole generation fall in love with Obama, who, with Rahm Emanuel, was just a front for the same corporate interests as the Republicans, and who got his campaign contributions from the same corporate interests as the Republicans.

You say there were 30,000 gun deaths in 2010 but provide no reference. Okay fine I'll give a source. As it turns out the number is 31,672 firearm deaths in 2010 in the United States. If you open the PDF you'll find that 61.2% of these (19,383) were suicides. 35% (11,085) were homicides. I haven't looked at exactly where justifiable homicide is included but according to the FBI statistics it's only a few hundred.
In either case the bulk of the deaths come from suicide and homicide. Let's focus on suicide real quick. Now, one argument could be made that stricter gun control would lessen the number of firearm related suicides given how easy, deadly, and obtainable firearms are. According to the data suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for the year of 2010 at 38,364 deaths. I assume this includes the previously mentioned 19,383 suicides by firearm. Now how much would stricter gun control lessen the number of suicides given the fact that only around 50% of them are due to firearms? If so by how much? That is a valid topic of debate and one you could put forth for stricter gun control.
Now let's focus on the homicides, 35% of all firearm related deaths. This is actually a pretty complex subject that is rather hard to find data on. For instance would better education lower firearm related deaths such as gang shootings? Would stricter gun control have a similar effect or would those homicides be shuffled into other categories such as blunt objects or knives? How does the prohibition on drugs and the subsequent black market and illicit trade of them affect violent crime, particularly with firearms? I don't have any data to link to off the top of my head. Feel free to supply data, studies, and sources that strengthens your position that gun control would reduce these numbers, preferably more than other means.
Now see, that is the beginning of a good debate on gun control. Granted it's only one facet of gun control as there are others, but it's better than throwing around a misleading number and claiming gun control will solve everything.
P.S. Chances are you'll die from heart disease or cancer. Smoking and being out of shape is vastly more likely to kill you than a gun. -

Oh ok. Not too bad for things that are mostly only used safely and non-criminally as toys right?
Since as I said 19k of those were self inflicted (meaning they could have used a car or razor or jumped off a bridge, making the tool irrelevant), and some percentage of the remaining deaths were criminals being shot - that's actually a pretty good figure, made higher of course because people like you insist that many innocent people go unarmed.
As for toys, there were over 260k injuries from toys in 2011.
By your logic we should not allow children to have toys.
What an ass. The sad thing is, you are a dangerous ass, with views that will get people killed or raped who could have protected themselves otherwise.
There were 83k rapes in 2011. If all of those women had been armed do you think that number would be higher, or lower?
Every one of those rapes, and rapes in years to come is on you - because you persist in spreading your dogma that guns are bad, when plainly they can help. Every woman you convince to be scared of a simple tool, is one more victim that is of your making.

The thing is, the USA has ALWAYS been far more lethal than the UK. Even before 'gun control' was really on the UK's radar, the US murder rate dwarfed the UK's.
The USA has actually closed much of the gap since the UK effectively banned handguns.
Oh, and on violent crime - I don't try to reach some crazy figure like '5X more violent', heck, in the article the dude says 4X. Going by the author of the article's attempt to create a 'comparable figure' that measures the same thing(FBI's definition of violent crime: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), 'Almost double', or '90% higher' is accurate.
It gets even more complicated when you recognize that murder in the USA is extremely racially biased.
Blacks are 12.6% of the population. Yet they're 44.0% of the victims, and 49.2% of the known perps. Get them down to the average for the rest of the races and we'd be a lot closer to Europe.
'Anybody but black', for example - 270M population, 2,925 non-black murders, yields a rate of 1.08 per 100k, lower than the 1.2 per 100k of the UK. Add murders known to be committed by blacks against other races back in and you're up to 3,436 and you're up to 1.27 per 100k, only very slightly higher than the UK's homicide rate.
And to try to prevent myself looking like a racist bastard, I feel the need to point out that this is correlation - I think we could drop it even more by radically adjusting the crime-ridden ghettos so they're not crime-ridden anymore, end the war on drugs that disproportionally targets blacks, provide programs that effectively reduce poverty, etc...
Roughly speaking - poor ghettos tend to be crime ridden, and in the USA due to history poor ghettos tend to be disproportionally black.

Gun laws
Sheesh... Just had to hit one of my hot buttons, didn't you?
Gun laws in Britain make no difference because you chaps are less violent than the USA PERIOD. Seriously, we still kill more of each other with non-firearms(4.8*32.3%=1.6) than you do total(1.2).
For that matter, if you go back in history, you'll find that we've actually closed much of the gap over the years since you guys effectively banned handguns. Heck, if we could end the spike in black male murder, we'd be a lot closer to you still.
I maintain that, if we really want to reduce the murder rate, we need to end the 'war on drugs', go in and provide effective education and job opportunities in the ghettos, and other systems to fight the current system of mostly-broken families in the ghettos.

Well, what's wrong with actually having anything to hide?
As a general matter maybe nothing, at least as far as simple privacy goes. The problem comes in when what is being hidden results in something like this or that . Those show the rights of American citizens being violated. Sadly, few people on Slashdot seem to think there is anything wrong with that, but some are at least willing to bid them to die well.

I'll save you time: while you would be correct to say that firearms are responsible for more murders than any other cause, the number of non-firearms murders is very nearly half that of firearms... roughly 8k to roughly 4k.
The point being: yes, granted, guns are used more often in murders... but it seems like those without guns are managing just fine without them too. Besides, I'm pretty sure those getting killed with fists and feet don't feel any better about it than those shot with a gun.
Now, a little thought experiment: if there were no guns, what do you think would happen? Would the TOTAL number of murders go down by roughly 8k? Or, would the number of murders not using guns GO UP? And why is that? Simple: violent people are violent people. Yes, guns might make it easier for them to kill... but a good percentage of them are going to murder WITHOUT a gun just the same... and hey, to use the anti-gun argument against them: isn't ONE murder with a boxcutter too much? Better ban them! If we can save just ONE LIFE by banning baseball bats, shouldn't we?
I'm not saying that if we removed guns from the equation that we wouldn't save a few lives. I think we would. There's no doubt some murders that wouldn't occur at all if there were no guns. The problem is that guns UNDENIABLY save lives, nearly every day. Are those lives saved somehow less important than those saved if there were no guns? I'm not even claiming the number of lives saved by guns is greater than those taken by murder with guns (although I believe that's the case, but I don't have a reference so I won't claim it)... I'm just saying if it's all about saving lives (hint: IT'S NOT) then a life saved with a gun is just as valuable as one taken with a gun.
People who want to kill will, by and large, find a way. That's the bottom line and that's the fundamental problem in our society, the fact that people WANT to kill (putting self-defense aside of course). The fact that guns might make it easier is tangential to the root cause and while banning guns might save a few lives, the impact won't be nearly as large as you want to think it might be and we'll be talking about banning the NEXT inanimate object quickly. Stop trying to attack something that's a proximal cause AT BEST and get to the root of the problem. That's the way we might actually make a difference in this country. We don't have a "gun violence" problem, we have a VIOLENCE problem. Any time you see "gun violence", that just shows there's an agenda at play and that person actually cares very little for saving lives and is more interesting in exerting and extending control (Oh, did our president say that? Hmm, point proven!)

The statistics conservatives were excited about a few months ago was that Rifles (not handguns, shotguns, or other) were responsible for fewer deaths than "blunt objects" (which includes clubs, hammers, etc). Of course this morphed into "Hammers kill more people than guns", but according to the statistics, guns make up over two thirds of all homicides. -

Perhaps the information is not available for the entire US population but it the FBI does very accurately track the information for officers. It turns out about 1 in 10 get thier gun stolen in the incident in which they are killed. About 1 in 20 are killed with thier own weapon.

OBJECTIVES: Switzerland has one of the highest rates of firearm suicides in the world. International studies show a positive correlation between the rate of households with guns and femicides with guns. Because its defense system requires a militia to keep personal firearms at home, Switzerland has a high rate of households with a gun.
METHODS: Records of suicides in the region of Basel between 1992 and 1996 were reviewed. Suicides with either army weapons or private firearms and suicides by other means were compared. Methods and types of homicides that occurred in the region at the same time were also analyzed.
FINDINGS: Firearm suicides were clearly the most frequent means of suicide. They were also used in 30.0% of domestic homicides, although other means were used at similar rates. Firearms for suicide were mainly used by men, especially army weapons. These men were younger, professionally better qualified, and fewer had ever been treated in one of the local state psychiatric services.
DISCUSSION: The use of firearms for suicide, rather than homicide, and particularly of army weapons by young, well-educated men, requires more attention in debates and informed policy regarding access to firearms and suicide prevention in Switzerland.

That's not to say that murder is OK, but it's hardly a situation in which black people are murdering white people left and right while white people are just innocent victims. In addition, in a very large percentage of murders the victim is a member of the murderer's family, and another significant number are at least acquainted with each other. Another important fact is that for women, the person most likely to kill them is their boyfriend or husband.
Blacks account for less than 15% of the general population. When they account for more than 50% of all violent crimes, that's really something to be considered.

I applaud the reality that gun violence has decreased so much in the past 30 years that we now count two people as a mass shooting! Our society has made great strides.

Some briefings by the Justice and Defense departments on the Law of War and national security law will firm up the legal ground. The world is going to start looking different at this point.

President Obama already owns at least two successful terrorist attacks, and two attempted attacks, ignoring the ones that were intercepted. He probably doesn't want to own any more. It's bad for the party at the polls, bad for his record as president, and bad for America, let alone the victims. Also note that he hasn't asked Congress to rescind the Authorization for Use of Military Force, passed after 9/11, and legally the same as a declaration of war.
If you're responsible and assumed that there were no terrorist threats before becoming informed, you might have a change of view as well. And if he hadn't, or wavers in the future, and that results in more successful terrorist attacks, the Congress would likely become a Republican congress within an election or two, and at that point they would help the President along.
