    Well even that link is kind of vague, but here is ablurb om MS reasoning for this from FGNonline, they claim that they did it to make the box more affordable, partly blaiming the cost to license the DVD movie decoder (interesting to hear MS complaining about the MPAA's IP policies in this way).

    But provided you are willing to pay the additional $30 for the remote/receiver package, you may find that it is harder to find than an Xbox console itself. (for example Amazon is currently out of stock). I guess MS guessed wrong when they thought only 10-15% of Xbox buyer would want the DVD playback capability. But of course, its no secret that one of MS's historic problems is trying guess what consumers want built-in, then making the decision for them whther they like it or not.

    ...when the GeForce2 GTS first came out. nVidia's marketroids said it was "a major step toward achieving [Pixar-level animation]." Pixar's Tom Duff commented:

    "Do you really believe that their toy is a million times faster than one of the cpus on our Ultra Sparc servers? What's the chance that we wouldn't put one of these babies on every desk in the building? They cost a couple of hundred bucks, right? Why hasn't NVIDIA tried to give us a carton of these things? -- think of the publicity milage they could get out of it.

    "At Moore's Law-like rates (a factor of 10 in 5 years), even if the hardware they have today is 80 times more powerful than what we use now, it will take them 20 years before they can do the frames we do today in real time. And 20 years from now, Pixar won't be even remotely interested in TS2-level images, and I'll be retired, sitting on the front porch and picking my banjo, laughing at the same press release, recycled by NVIDIA's heirs and assigns."

    There are tons of gaming sites out there that focus on news. The only "problem" is that they are usually platform specific, except for the big ones, but that can be solved by some perl scripts :) Here's a list of sites I visit often (too much?):

    • Gamers.com - Not too much info nowadays (they got bit too)
    • The GIA - Fairly good coverage of major events. Very review and gameplay heavy, rather than industry news.
    • Gamasutra - Industry news in a simple format, though more finance and 3rd party tools related
    • FGN Online - Pretty good coverage. It's now an IGN affiliate.
    • SegaDojo - Fairly good SEGA related coverage
    • MS Xbox - For the people who can get past the fact that Microsoft might just have a kick ass gaming machine
    • Final Fantasy Online - For any Final Fantasy freak. The site's down at the moment, though
    • IGN Games - Coverage of anything and everything in gaming
    • GameSpot - Okay, so it's GameSpot. At least they publish all their media in downloadable MPEGs
    • Core Magazine - All the random things that other people don't cover, including interviews and stuff straight from Japan.
    • US Famitsu - Currently down, with no plans of coming back up, but it's the US branch of the standard gaming press in Japan - Famitsu
    • Stomped - Lots of coverage of gaming in general, with some focus on FPS.
    • Blue's News - Blue keeps going, and it's always focused on FPS for the most part.
    • OMM - And of course, Old Man Murray.


    A good number of the above are fairly major publications. Snowball.Com is in trouble as well, but IGN is their biggest crowd attraction, and IGN Games has to be near the top too, so it should last a little while. Core is a major publication in Japan with a real circulation. ZDNet + C|Net together have enough muscle to keep GameSpot going.

    Friend showed me this article which quotes Sega insiders as denying a link to the PS2 or development of PS2 games, but won't deny there are big changes coming.

    It's interesting that Sega expects a return to profitability in 2001. What's also interesting is that Sony posted a loss nearly 3 times that of Sega, hasn't released enough product for xmas and rumors are floating around that there won't be more PS2s til spring. I wonder when the Sony doom & gloom rumors will start...

    Really, all this Salon article says is that making consoles is a money-losing business in the short term (which we all knew already) and a whole bunch of speculation about Sega and Microsoft and whatnot. I'm waiting for facts, not what ifs.
