Mod me down, you know you want to
You.
Are.
Unable.
To understand.
My point.
Therefore: You are stupid (or a troll, which is the same). Because it's a simple point, and I've explained it repeatedly.
I make the stupid call thusly: can't understand something simple after repeated explanation and multiple examples? Stupid.
I'm not calling you names to piss you off, or to get you to respond, I'm explaining to you that you are apparently not very smart.
Either prove to me that you aren't stupid, or live with your dumbness. I'm often surrounded by persons of lesser intellect, I'm used to it by now, but I can see how you would be in denial about it.
You care a lot that Ford should be caucasian. I don't. I think it's irrelevant.
Completely off.
Your whole argument is based on erroneous foundations.
And you obviously don't think it's irrelevant, you're here arguing, obviously giving a damn. I think, in fact, that you are racist, you are happy that he's black, and you are defensive because I have a very valid reason why he shouldn't be. That would make you a racist hypocrite instead of an idiot. Which would explain your demonstrated ability to type words. You could simply be a troll, your behaviour, with the insults and the repeated baiting, is certainly troll-like. Hard to tell if you're attacking me with unfounded claims of racism because you're a troll or because you're projecting.
I don't care that he'd be caucasian. I care that he'd be like he has always been, which happens to be caucasian. There is a subtle difference. But, that seems to be some kind of abstract concept the likes of which escapes most mortals... or just a vocal minority of very dense people.
Do you understand that part? Can you understand THAT part? That I don't care that Ford be white, I care that the casting director of the "faithfull" movie cast his actors according to the established look of said characters if they are going to claim faithfullness?
Is this too complicated?
Maybe some pseudocode:
if (!theSame) {!faithfull;}
which is different from what you "understood", which was "if (!white) {bad;}".
So you're saying because your first experience of HG2G is the TV series, in which Ford was played by a white actor, that it's a deviation for him to be played by a black one?
No.
You're wrong a lot, especially when you go "you are saying that". For a brit, you sure have a hard time understanding the english language.
I'm saying that it's FUCKING RETARDED (oh no! bad words and capitals, oh my) to pretend that he has never been described since I can show you pictures and an animated line drawing of him that comes from a production that directly involved the author while he was alive.
You, and others, have a hardcore quasi-religious need to have the description in black and white (now, why didn't I just say "words"?), on paper. Well toots, the story is also in audio, and in audio-visual format. Accept it.
I find it tremendously idiotic to selectively ignore the visual information available to you when discussing how the character look. Therefore, I pass the following judgement on people who act that way: They must be stupid to do something so stupid.
I like the idea of him obliviously using an american accent for years without realizing he was the only one.
You... do know he doesn't actually speak english, right? I mean... There was a passage in the books, something about fishes (they were yellow, BTW, you seem to care a lot about colours that are specifically mentioned in writing)...

Other Hitchhiker Sites
Have you seen other sites out there with your books as the main topic and what do you think of them? I think that Floor 42 is one of the best examples of a fan website I have ever seen.
This interview is well timed since just this past Saturday I picked up several of your books at a used book store in Northern Virginia. I already owned a couple of them but bought these copies because I hadn't seen the cover art on any other copies I had come across.
Thanks for the enjoyable reading and I look forward to more in the future.

The word from the horse's mouth
Dammit dammit dammit. We really didn't need our pipe
/.ed right now.Okay, here's the deal. There we were, four of us Digital Village techies, standing in the British Library with Douglas sitting between us and the cameras, and we're quite happily browsing the site no problem.
7:30pm: The programme starts.
7:31pm: 3 gazillion British net users click from the BBC site straight through to h2g2.com all at once. PerlEx and IIS go mental. Boom.
(Fortunately we managed to turn that to our advantage: Douglas got to say that the site was so popular that it couldn't take the strain.)
Now, several hours later, the site is unusable from the outside. However, it's not NT's fault, as the server's fine; it's the pipe. We're only on a T1. We're frantically moving various images off to mirror sites now, hopefully that should help all you guys actually get in and see the thing.
We're really proud of it, as it goes, and some other people seem to quite like it too. Everything didn't inspire the site but we did look at it several times while we were designing. (Everything is similar in some ways, but not many - however, I still have a lot of admiration for Everything's features, and we'll be trying to send h2g2 in that direction as time goes on, as well as many other directions too... we've got a lot of big plans, and we're not going to sit still)
So, yeah, it runs on NT, but there are reasons for that. (even though that may be unthinkable to some
/.ers, who obviously have never had to do a professional site on a tight budget and deadline) And a good chunk of the blame for any site instability goes to Perl and PerlEx (which manages to throw away 50MB every time it restarts an interpreter... can someone please show ActiveState how to check for memory leaks?)But I would hope that the server system comes second in you guys minds to the fact that it's the Hitchhiker's Guide! The real thing! Online! And you can contribute!
Come on... hands up everyone who doesn't want to be a Guide Researcher. Thought so.
So, traffic permitting, we hope everyone can log on, join in and fulfil at least one childhood dream.
