Rocket Man is not a rocket scientist
When someone like Mr. John here admits he's making an uninformed opinion, "I don't have a mobile phone or an iPod or anything", its kinda hard to give his words any weight no matter how much of an icon he is in the music industry.
Just because he personally doesn't use a tool doesn't mean it needs to be completely done away with. I could point to many uses of the internet as a means for musical collaboration. For applications there's Ninjam for one, FL Studio has Collab, and there's also many online communities of artists working together and feeding off each other's inspiration and creativity.
The candle hasn't burned out long ago, Elton. There's just more sources of light that you haven't bothered noticing. -
Re:This rules
Gotta love those finnish hackers.
I assume you mean Oskari Tammelin?
I love Buzz and use it for a guitar processor. I totally agree that Buzz is an amazing piece of free software.
However, I find the whole "hard drive crash" thing awful convenient. Remember, Oskari was the guy who was "dumb" enough to develop without backups and then have a "convenient" hard drive crash shortly before Buzz plugin support appeared in Fruityloops. http://www.flstudio.com/
Shortly after the crash we saw the appearance of XS-1 and BuzzVST as well. Hmmmmmmm.
Personally, this "crash" looks like a few cards up the sleeve and a personal marketing move. Oh well, for the most part mod scenesters are complete asshats so who could blame Oskari for turning his back on them?
Here's hoping some Buzz clones can pick up the torch someday...

Re:Wow. big news?
And the musicians are having the most fun kludging stuff together to make some phat sounds out of the common peripherals they already own. I have been hooking up a Sidewinder Force Feedback steering wheel to the x-y controller in FL Studio scratching it like it was a vinyl turntable. and also use the gas/brake pedals for stomp-box effects and a wah controller for the guitar...Easy shit. Also, try using a Wacom tablet as a tool similar to what a KORG KAOSS Pad can do. I am amazed that it's taken the rest of the geek community is just starting to catch on. Oh well, kudos for those who make the most of it.
Move along, nothing to see here. -
absolutely!
As soon as FL Studio decides to release their Pocket PC version of the software, 2GB would be quite sufficient to be able to hold a sizeable sample collection for when you are on extended journeys and want to pound out some tunes.

Re:Yes, you probably can!
Assuming you're on the Windows platform, I would suggest you check out FLStudio - it comes with some decent software synths (FLS calls them "generators") and also host many free virtual instruments ("vsti" and "dxi"), as well as shareware and commercial ones.
There are other choices as well - Orion (PC), Muzys (PC & Mac), Cubasis VST (PC & Mac) Tracktion (PC, Mac in beta), Massiva (PC), and Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 (PC) for example. A bit higher up the chain, you have Cubase SE (PC & Mac), and Sonar Studio (PC), Logic Audio big box (Mac) or the self-contained Reason (PC & Mac).
If you want to go beyond synth presets, soundfonts and GM sounds, then you'll probably want to understand analog (subtractive) synthesis - see Analog Synthesis for Beginners for an introduction.
The "definitive site" for this is KvR-VST. Go there and read a bit, then sign up to ask questions. It's a friendly crowd. Just don't go here, that guy isn't very helpful.

Re:What if everyone's a musician?
We're not talking about the video game "music" you make in Fruity Loops, dipshit. We're talking about real music where knowledge of music theory is helpful, if not required. Have you priced guitars, basses, amps, mics, mixers, etc. lately? These tools are no more affordable today than they were 10, 20, 30 years ago.

Re:crippleware
ptfree is not the same as protools - ptfree is limited in the number of audio and midi channels, does not work with any of the digidesign hardware, and has limited plugin usage

in general, the midi implementation in protools is limited compared to emagic's logic audio
other really good music production suites that won't break the home studio bank

some electronic music producers who use the big software tools occasionally screw around with the cheaper packages and then show how you can make the original song using them - such is the case with Infected Mushroom's "Dancing with Kadafi"
