Re:Can't blame them
just making tiny tweaks to specific lines of code, initial values (positions, velocities, durations, etc.), state machine states, etc. It was well designed code too.
A really good design would put at least initial values in data files. Ideally, you would have a command in-game to reload the data and start the scene over, but worst case you just quit and rerun the exe. You shouldn't need to touch the binaries to tune the game!
At Flying Lab only the devs and testers have VS installed. The content and art folks work on the data, programmers work on the binaries. Anything configurable is in Perforce as .ini or .xml. -

Re:Offline games require online reporting = BOGUS
What I'd like to add is an explanation for why Valve created Steam at all. It wasn't just to get more "control" and defeat hackers and pirates.
Yup. It's also because they're going to attempt their own version of Gathering of Developers. There are several games being developed currently for the Steam network, including Pirates of the Burning Sea, a pirate-themed MMO (no affliation, I'm just waiting for their game after PotBS). Basically, Steam will be releasing a lot more than just Valve's games. Hopefully this will be good for small developers - they can concentrate on building a good, small game that can make some money, and not on trying to avoid getting fscked by the publisher. -
MMO = .COM
I get the feeling the MMOs are the gaming industry equivalent of the
.COM companies in the 90s, and we're starting to see the fallout (no pun inteded), with all the announced cancellations.
Once UO and Everquest hit it big, so many game companies drooled at the cash cow of MMOs. So they all scrambled to create their own MMOs to grab a piece of the market. I mean Motor City Online?
Browsing this list of just RPG related MMOs to be released, it looks like too many companies are just grasping at straws. Is there a huge pirate afficionado market just clamoring for an MMORPG to meet their needs? Do we really need another MMO in a high fantasy setting... or 10 more?
These are the most expensive games to develop, and the most difficult to attract players to. These are the types of games that can destroy companies. I am just worried that like in the .COM era, alot of money is being thrown at alot of doomed projects.
You are basically playing the MMO lotto, unless you have a solid license like matrix online, a rabid community asking for a game like City of Heroes; and even then MMO players have become very picky and if the game isn't that good you will have problems like Star Wars Galaxies. -
Oooooh! Shiny!
FlyingLabs software is developing Delta Green, which may or may not be very good. But, after seeing Doom3 at E3, the dev team has created some stunning visuals; particularly with the normal mapping technique. Check out vids here. There's also a HomeLAN interview here.
