Re:Xbox Media Server
This is what I did, I built a tiny HTPC house in an old NES case, the only moving parts are in the slot-in dvd burner.
It's an Asus ION3 Deluxe motherboard with 4gb ram. I added a 60GB SSD and installed Ubuntu/XBMC on it, it works perfectly in full HD.
There is no active cooling, but the temperature doesn't get high at all. The deluxe version of the motherboard had an USB IR receiver and remote control which work just fine in XBMC :)
I keep my media on a nice NAS with 4x2TB Drives in it, if that is full, I will add another NAS.I posted my project for a bit here: http://forum.fok.nl/topic/1470800
The pic with me and the glasses was after I got a molten piece of plastic in my eye, the site is in dutch.
Enjoy :) -

Re:It's funny and sad...
Message from the netherlands, and this has been in the news for a couple of days over here as well.
The i aint going into whether or legal system is good, if our priorities are screwed up, whether our sentences are too high or too low, but just a little feedback from the dutch sources.
please dont hold me for not using the proper words for everything, i will try to explain this as good as I can.
The sentence the 2 boys got was for stealing property with violence.
The motivation of the judge was that like with real-life property you had to go thru some kind of effort to obtain these items and being able to use them afterwards, therefor it is property and had some kind of value(ingame gold, status, emotional)
His motivation for calling it theft was that the boy who got beaten and threatened wasnt able to use the "property" after this, saying his property wasnt within reach for him and therefor stolen.I hope this clearifies any questions about how the judgement was made.

It's still vaporware
The movie hasn't been seen by anyone yet except a bunch of politicians who can't say anything about its contents. This is really a failure on the side of NetSol, as there was no objectionable content hosted whatsoever (a cover image, a title and the words "coming soon", zomg, the horror!). If the upcoming movie is really offensive to some religious groups, then they've just fueled the backlash some more. It just gets worse with every news item about it, and this has been going on for months. See what happened in Danmark, no media circus means the muslims get mad about it 3 months late. Now even with NO MOVIE RELEASED WHATSOEVER there are already flags being burned: http://www.nieuwnieuws.nl/archives/buitenland/2008/03/protesten_tegen_fitna_de_fotos.html
And those who still want to burn a flag and haven't yet done so: Please get it right (the least you could do!): Red bar (not dark purple), white bar, blue bar, top to bottom! Don't be these guys http://forum.fok.nl/topic/1133672 Unless you add a star, in which case it's the SFR Yugoslavian flag: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_SFR_Yugoslavia.svg -
XS4All, Netherlands
The Dutch ISP XS4All has a very long history of both active and pro-active defense of their customer rights. It is currently leading an international petition against the EU plans for data retention, for example. It also started case against the Dutch government over wiretapping.
In the past it has on a regular bases stood up to defend their customer rights, including a long running spat against the Church of Scientology and a case of freedom of expression even if it is about derailing German trains.
Last but not least XS4All actively sues spammers (sorry, Dutch only).

Re:Ads are irritating...You might find this intrestting, but in the netherlands a major ad placer went against this practice. They are now limiting the volume of ads at the transmission because to many people complained.
Dutch discussion
Roughly it says that the "STER" (the agency that runs the ads on a number of stations mostly public) has developed a machine that removes excess volume before the ad is broadcast. Test so far have proven positive and it is now being introduced.
Oh by the way the "STER" (Stichting Ether Reclame) has a sort of monopoly so they can enforce this practice with ease.

more information
I live about 5km away and at 11:00 CET I could still see a lot of brown/grey smoke in the air.
frontpage.fok.nl (a dutch news site) reports the following, well at least not the article itself but in a reaction to it: "The D-wing was recently renovated to make it more 'fireproof', so there are no harmful gasses and such.
Every morning a backup is made from all the data. Unfortunetely, before this backup could be taken, it was already destroyed, which means data from yesterday morning is lost.
Tonight (CET of course) there will probably be an emergency network running at 10kb/s and the server will probably be online in 3 days. Until then Teletop (some kind of information system for communication between tutors and students) and the utwente email will be down. Something about the building: The TWRC building some kind of monument which included that the outside of the building cannot be changed. This means the renovation plans have to be the same as the orignal building."
At least I hope they got rid of the air-problem, because it really stinked in that building anyways. Too bad everything to lost. They were just about to move all the servers to another location.
I was just printing my report which I had to hand in at 12:00 CET when I heard it. I worked the last 24 hours to complete the damn thing and then this. :(
Lucky for me I don't have internet from the university, but it still sucks bigtime.
