Re:Am I Missing Something?
While my PC is a single CPU, I also own a Mac G4 500Mhz dual CPU system. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but what impresses me is that I can be building something on it (e.g. Mozilla) and the desktop is still responsive and fast. That's what a dual CPU gets you. I recently tried a Mac mini (clocked at 1.25Gz) and the different in performance was very noticeable - if I launched a video or something, and ran the mouse over the dock the desktop would start getting all jerky as it tried to service both tasks. My venerable G4 has a slower clockspeed than a Mac mini, but I've never seen anything like that before.
It's all about the RAM. Notice that i'm comparing a 500 MHz single G4 to a 1000 MHz single G4, and calling the faster one slow as ass. this is because the faster one only has 25% of the RAM! the faster machine also has a 2.66x faster bus (100 MHz SDR vs 266 MHz DDR used as SDR) and a loads better GPU, but it's still a PITA to run because it doesn't have enough RAM to run a web browser, (Safari) and a [word processor (Pages) || email program (Entourage)] at the same time without swapping.
How much RAM do you have in your Mac mini? how much in your PM G4? i'm willing to bet that you have a similar ratio i do. try upgrading the RAM on that mini and see what happens.
I build lots of source code. Things like Mozilla take 30 minutes or more to build. On my current system drags down other tasks such and the whole system is stilted and slow.
You should give gentoo a try. That metadistro does a good job at staying responsive while you build code. even with a single CPU/Core. -
Re:been seeing this a while
i've been deleting bookmarks for sites that i used to regularly visit since september because of this "problem".
I'm vocal about it (see above) to convince people to stop viewing the sites that are infested with popups. It's the only way to resolve the problem - if a site endorses popups, they may get a short term boost in earnings, but they get a long term reduction in eyeballs, and in turn a reduction in earnings.
BOYCOT THE POPUP INFESTED SITES! -

or you can use the same bluetooth wireless headset that you would be using with your phone.

Re:A buttload of Money
wow! you can put the mobo in (3 mintues) and the CPU (1 mintue) and the RAM (30 seconds) and expansion cards (2-5 minutes) and HD/Optical Drive (5-7 minutes) *AND INSTALL AN OS AND APPS* (3 hours) in 15 minutes?! please tell me what timewarp you use. i'd love to show my boss.
(don't forget about my mirror of the video that has dropped off to the second page...) -

i have a mirror at http://www.forgottennewbies.com/~natef/macmini-sm

Re:Powerbooks
The first generation of G4 PowerBooks have IRda ports. thats 400 MHz or 500 MHz. only.
I also happen to have a 500 MHz TiBook... one of the hinges is busted (and has been amputated) but if you are interested, we can talk price. (since i made that post, the AirPort card, and 256 MiB of RAM moved over to the iBook) -

new news?
this is new news how? sadly, us nerds and geeks are probably the only people who already realized this, so
/. is just preaching to the quire here... :\
the following is an excerpt of what i posted in a recent rant:
Sadly, in the case of the presidential election this year, (or the farce that was the California gubernatorial recall last year) only the Democans (the republicans and democrats are the same thing) get their names known to the United States public. The system is so royally fucked up, that I can't even vote for the non-Republicrats as I have no idea what those unknowns represent! I guess I'll have to vote for myself all the way down the ticket. :\ -
Re:Stunning
well, since he (she?!) obviously doesn't want it, you can send one my way
;)
spambait@ForgottenNewbies.com - since i run the server, i know it isn't going to disappear into the void like hotmail and yahoo appear to be doing :) -
Re:My experiences with Gmail invitations
is is too late to put in a me too?

um... me too!
send off an invite to spambait@ForgottenNewbies.com and i'll try to take advantage of it

Re:which version
Ahh the joys of self replies
:)
* Grouped sorting sorts the groups ascending or descending, depending on your settings, but it only sorts the items in the groups ascending. I haven't found an option to fix that. (Yet. Anyone have any suggestions?)
I figured out how to get the behavior I wanted, but it isn't as strait forward as it should be. First, I chose View -> Arrange By -> Edit Custom Arrangements. The Custom Arrangements: Mail window opens.
From here I can click New, give it a title and set the group arrangement to Date Received. In the Third menu, I chose Newest On Top. This sets it to the way it has been all along - sorting the items in the group by Date Sent, Oldest on Top! When I tell it to sort the items in the group, Date Received
is disabled. Why? Because I used it to sort the group.* Well I found an alternative that appears to give me the correct behavior - most of the time. Sort items in group by Priority, with Highest on top.
Now that I've created a custom Arrangement, I can choose View -> Arrange By -> <title of custom arrangement I set above>. Since I almost never get email with a non-normal priority, my email sorts as expected - most recently received email on top. If I do get a higher than normal priority email, it'll find itself sorted to the top of the group (not that big of a deal) and if it's a lower priority email, I'll never see it because it will jump to the bottom of the group. :)
That's 1 annoyance down... Here's a replacement ;)
With HTML email, Entourage has inherited IE 5's Anti-Aliasing bugs! For this particular bug I've provided screenshots, click the links to see my examples.
Notice that the bold text is not AA'd, and the text after Apple Computer, Inc. is not AA'd
Now it gets worse!
In IE 5, I used to select text to fix the AA glitch, but now, it just throws the layout around for bold, and the fixed glitch does stick for the line after Apple.
I'm off to give my list of gripes to Microsoft :)
* Microsoft just loves to provide me with roadblocks! I wonder what the logic is behind preventing me from sorting the items in a group in the same order as the group itself is... -

Re:Yeah, only SPAM, sure.
are you trying to make my life and that of every other domain name leaser who runs mutiple web sites on one server hard?
have a look at DNS for images.ForgottenNewbies.com, board.ForgottenNewbies.com, etc.
i could go on, but i'll just get to the point. They are setup so that the DNS for *.ForgottenNewbies.com points to 64.142.15.200, and then i just have the individual site set up in apache. on top of that when someone wants a single file from my server in irc i can give them a url like i.love.long.long.long.urls.ForgottenNewbies.com/fi le :)
if you force me to tweek my DNS records (my ISP charges per change - yeah i know i should just run my own copy of BIND, but i don't want to worry about the uptime of a pair of DNS servers) i shall be forced to send you the bill :P -
