The dangers
Contrary to the fear of grey goo, the main danger of nanotech comes from the fact that particles are smaller than the natural filters that organisms have evolved to protect sensitive cells. According to the article, the nanopant tech is just buzzword hype since the stain protection material is just another chemical. However, the article does mention the studies showing that carbon nanotubes and buckyballs do cause damage to cell membranes in humans and in other parts of the food chain.

Nothing about space here?Nothing in the piece about the two Mars Rovers. Nothing about Space Ship One. Nothing about the Cassini flight (though some of it's major work is still to come).
Is space exploration no longer considered technological? Or is this just not on their "radar" screens?
Still, I'm glad to see they mentioned some of the less recognized advances such as the quantum entanglement work.

Hard to generalizeI think part of the problem with this, and many other similar studies, is that the results don't generalize well.
Personal example - I can deal with a fair amount of multiple tasking as long as it's the right kind of task. However, some things require concentration. For myself, this means putting headphones on and turning on some music. If I don't have something that will tune out everything else, I fall right back into "do a little of everything mode".
On the other hand, my wife has to be focused and has to have pretty much complete quiet or she can't do anything. That's not a knock (she almost has a PhD), but it does mean we have to plan things appropriately.
FWIW,
Ewan

It can be done...
Just come hunt through my closet and you will find a NIC, an old 120Mhz machine, and an old 800MB HD with Win 98 already on it. Format, install linux and there you go.
Of course I assume you want this PC to be usable for something other than reading a doc in notepad/emacs huh? Well in that case go to this site http://www.freedesktoppc.com/default.aspx?referer= 8337143 here and sign up. No problem. -
Kick-AssI never thought they could do something as wild as create new elemnts. What purpose could this serve?

HuH?It's popular among Korean kids also. It's basically an online Bomberman (Nexon bought the rights to Bomberman from Hudsonsoft AFAIK) that tracks your win/lose stats and rewards you with the game's currency for good play. You can use the currency to buy different accessories/clothes for your character.

WowHow am I not surprised. I've heard that the PSP is supposed to last 2-3 hours. That's not horrible, and I doubt I would play any particular PSP game for longer than 2 hours, unless I was at the DMV. But compared to Nintendo DSs 10-15 battery life, that is pretty horrible!

PC Ports!
I loved GTA3 and I loved GTA:VC. And I really do understand the many, many reasons to release the next one, San Andreas, on the PS2. But it should be released on the PC.
And this article is why.
Multi-theft Auto basically takes the GTA franchise "all the way." I wouldn't dare suggest that GTA:VC wasn't worth the purchase price, and the developers reasons for not finishing the multiplayer portions (they didn't think they could do it to their own satisfaction, or that of other gamers) are totally understandable.
But that's what mod communities and dedicated fan-bases are for. I loved GTA:VC and having that experience multiplayer is just exciting. I'm confident San Andreas will be fantastic, but it will never be the game GTA3 or GTA:VC have become, because there won't be a "rename the cars to their real names" mod, or a mod that adds new and interesting vehicles, or a mod that creates a multiplayer, or text files where the physics engine can be toyed with...
Yeah, I know, their target audience doesn't give two shakes for neat-o physics engines. But I am sure ten years from now, those things will allow GTA:VC to stand out as a classic while San Andreas stands as another "merely good" game.
Unless we get a PC port...!

Content Versus Capability
Well, I'm not ready to just give my stamp of approval to everything this guy has to say, but it's nice to see someone providing content for the technologies he wants to push.
I'm trying to think of a nice metaphorical example, but I think it's simplest to just point out the number of video games with similar hardware requirements and drastically different levels of performance. Or maybe a certain operating system owned by a certain billionaire who has programmers spend a lot of time on a candy-coating but no time optimizing that candy coating and, god forbid, giving us a (to borrow the movie equivalent) sequel instead of a remake.
In short, having sweet technology is cool. But it's even cooler when guys like this give it some content that challenges the specs.
