There's always some inherent weakness, for example, with email spam they have to harvest mail addresses in some way to build a mailing list to send spam.

The addresses they harvest can be poisoned using a spamido technique so that they waste their time sending spam to /dev/null all over the internet. A waste of my bandwidth, but not my time.

It's the spammers underlying weakness that should be exploited. A spammers strength and weakness are the same thing grasshopper.

I don't know anything about Gnutella but I'll bet that there are certain characteristics that can be used to make spam a waste of time.

Goverments have a need to protect themselves? I dont think so... Governments have a need to protect ME - that's who they work for. I'm the one that pays the taxes that keep them in business. Any government that considers me the outsider is not a government - it's a police state.

A couple more (slightly unsober) thoughts...

The RIAA is protecting it's Intellectual Property - and quite rightly. However, the RIAA didn't _create_ the IP - they're just administering it "on behalf" of the artist under a contract which I'm sure is written very much in favour of the RIAA. I'd like to see a music business where the artist had more say in how their IP was presented ("More advertising or I'm going to mp3.com where they've got real coverage") and not have to put up with whatever it takes to get a contract today...

The whole Napster/RIAA court case will, I hope, cause the RIAA to examine itself in the light of new technology (ideas & hardware) and evolve to a more sympathetic business model which encompasses the Napsterites/artists/distributors and record companies and their idea of how music should be obtained.

none do exactly what you desire but being that most are opensource, they could ... ;) the cddb feature is of course the tricky part. you'll see that one of the perl scripts (RipIt) sort of does it but doesn't have a web-interface but idk, maybe it could.

Basically, the registrars and ICANN are currently just abdicating all responsibility over the organisation of the DNS.

What the hell are they being paid for?

I have a document here http://www.yelm.freeserve.co.uk/dns/ which describes the kind of changes that must be made if the DNS is to function properly.

There is no technical reason why the existing system can't continue to function. It just needs the registrars and ICANN to provide a little organisation.

Registrations in the existing domains should be stopped, new global TLDs created with subcategories and registrars should only be given a subcategory to administer when all new entries in that domain will be essentially flat. The registrars have shown that they are incapable of administering a heirarchy responsibly.

1) The whole DNS problem would go away if the ICANN would properly manage the name space

2) Trademarks Vs. Free Speech? With 63 characters for a domain name now, you can fit an opinion in. 2600 is getting sued by Version because they registered versionsucks.com and Version thinks that infringes on the Version trademark. What about wethinkverisonsucks.com?

3) Companies versus Individuals? If you're some guy whose last name is Ford, I think you've got a compelling reason to be allowed to own ford.com.

4) Who's making the money? The registrars and the Lawyers. Especially the Lawyers. Seems like anywhere there's a thorn in our sides, the Lawyers aren't too far behind.

5) What if I create a completely new naming system (Say, LDAP based) and hack gethostbyname and company to use it. At what point will these battles start taking place over my name space?

Pioneers in hires bitmap displays with a GUI, still unequalled today, there were these LISP Machines, originally developed at MIT, then at companies such as Symbolics (re-read the relevant chapters of Steven Levy's "Hackers" for the sad story of free software becoming proprietary software). Users of LISP machines say they are still unequalled today in many ways.

Hercules is a System/370 and ESA/390 emulator which can IPL and execute S/370 and ESA/390 instructions. It can also emulate CKD and FBA DASD, printer, card reader, tape, and local non-SNA 3270 devices.

True, it is an emulator and not a native OS but it is interesting.

i have a 105 key logitech internet keyboard with 17 extra internet keys (for a grand total of 122 keys (= ) and i couldnt figure out what to do with the extra keys in linux (in windoze it used the logitech software drivers in order to work)

then i found the scan codes for the extra keys and now in linux a row of internet keys are used to switch to consoles 1-6 (havent figure out what to do with the other 11 internet keys)

anyhow, it seems the keys work through some kind of software in windows, in *nix, we can figure out the keyboard scancode and use these extra keys on the keyboard for other purposes (such as rm -rf /)

p.s. is extrans (html tags to text) not working?

And this is why copyright period is too long.

Lets face it, with a few exceptions, a film made more than a few years ago is almost worthless. Not enough people will want to see it in a theatre or want to hire or buy the video to make it economic for the copyright owner to release it. The same is true for books, software, etc etc etc.

However, the majority of companies will hold onto their almost worthless assets 'just in case' they do find a way to make money off of it. That means that eventually the content will die.

There are games available for emulators, eg this archive. The games are nearly 20 years old. No one could possible make a cent trying to sell them, and in most cases the copyright owners have dissapeared into the mist of time, yet there are enthusiasts around who will keep copies of their old games.

There should be a way for stuff to become public domain in a reasonable amount of time for as much as possible. Maybe like trademarks, if you don't defend them, you loose them. Also, there should be an incentive to avoid loosing archives like this. Perhaps a tax credit for every accesable item properly stored in a company museam.

With the current rules, we are not promoting artistry, we are maximizing profits for a few companies at the expense of our heritage.

You can. It's called Hercules. It runs under Linux and emulates a S/370 or ESA/390 mainframe. Although not quite Open Source (and definitely not GPL), it's free "...for your own personal non-commercial educational and hobby use". You can use it run OS/360, MVT and other old stuff which is public domain. See Jay Maynard's page for instructions on how. You can just about run Linux/390 under Hercules :-)

Learn to use style sheets. The font tag should never be used as it is horrible. Look at [the HTML 4.01 spec] and [the CSS-1 spec].

Look at [my site] for an example - no font tags at all. This is in pure XHTML 1.0, which is an XML extension of HTML 4.01. Sorry about the image borders - the border parameter of the img tag isn't allowed in XHTML 1.0, and yet Netscape seems not to understand the style sheet line that removes it. Works in IE 5.0 though...

Virtualy all the ISPs in the UK are now free (you just pay for a local call), most allow sign-up on the internet.

The most popular ISP at the moment is probably FreeServe, whilst it's probably not the best you can sign up online before you leave. Although you need to specify a name and adress etc.., you can always lie!

One problem with using a free ISP is they require your phone connection to support CLI (Caller Line Identification), most hotels don't forward this information. Howerver Freeserve allows you to use most of the services without CLI except e-mail, newsgroups etc.. (for which you presumably have access to with your current ISP anyway).

All ISPs (the decent ones anyway) cover the entire country with Local Call Acesss, in the UK we have 0845 (amongst others) numbers which equate to a local call regardless to where you are calling from.

BTW phone calls cost about 4p (daytime) 1.7p (evenings) and 1p (weekends) a minute, but this will be more for hotels (obviously).

Electrical power supply is 230V or there abouts (it was 240V until the EU stuck its nose in), you will probably find that the power supply for your laptop has a switch or something that will let you change to this voltage.

More and more hotels have phone jacks, some use crappy internal systems that won't support a decent modem connection, I suggest you check with the hotel before you book.

Phone jacks are different in the UK, you can buy an adapter from most electrical stores in the UK (so you probably can in the states as well).

AFAIK Modems that work in the states will work here, whilst modems are supposed to be BAPT approved to connect them to British phone networks you shouldn't find any problems.

I have no idea about France, sorry.

As far as I'm aware, the X-Prize is only applicable for teams getting humans into orbit, not to the Moon. It's an order of magnitude more difficult to contemplate landing on the Moon.

And even if I'm wrong, the X-Prize really is only a token prize; it's not actually worth that much, only a few million. You're not likely to recoup your investment on it.

Commercial interest in space will only come about when CATS is available (Cheap Access To Space). Well, that's not entirely true, but at the moment when it costs $10k to lift a pound into space, it might as well be.

I wrote a paper about some of the socio-economic prerequisites for getting into space, which was presented at the Second Mars Society convention - it's available online here

Temporary restraining order DENIED!

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
