    The next question is, why would you ever want to run Linux on the bare metal?

    You wouldn't.

    At least, not if you had a real S/390.

    But for those of us who don't, or who find it inconvenient to get to one, there's Hercules.

    So if Linux/390 runs, even poorly, under Hercules (i.e., on the bare iron), I don't have to either work under x3270 on an actual mainframe, nor do I have to build a cross-compiling GCC to do development and porting on the Linux/390 platform.

    Of course it'd be nice if IBM would start distributing evaluation, software-only versions of VM so I could load VM on Hercules and then Linux under VM. But now I'm just fantasizing.

    The bizarre thing is that the guy's web page already has a link to the Linux7k project. With the correct spelling of EPOC too.

    Linux already runs on the Series 5 and Geofox 1 (EPOC/32) palmtops. You can find out about it at Calcaria, home of the Linux-7110 project (for Linux on the ARM 7110). Note that Linux-7110 uses 2.2 series kernels, rather than the 2.0 kernel (mentioned by the originator of this thread at his project web page (which was incorrectly referenced in the original article).

    A project that is worth pursuing without reinventing the wheel would be to fix the ARLO boot loader so that it works on the OS5 release of EPOC/32 used in the Series 5MX, Series 7, Revo, and NetBook computers. Because of substantial device driver changes in this release, ARLO doesn't work any more and some porting work is required.

    The relevancy of putting a Microsoft bash in the article could be debated heavily, but the truth is that although the Amiga didn't fit in with Gates's plan for all home computers to resemble miniature mainframes (The Amiga was small, fast and comparitively reliable, anathema to DOS and Windoze-heads in the early '90s), I don't believe M$ considered them a real threat due to the fact that their main user base was based in Europe, which, he probably reasoned, could be swung by a heavy advertising campaign from a 'new' product. People from the UK will agree that we were hit by a MONSTROUS ad campaign for Win95 in an attempt to switch us. Adults bought PC's because of the heavy advertising and didn't know any better, and the kids bought them because of DOOM, which didn't have a serious contender on the Amiga for another year. (Although it said a lot for the machine that AB3D, Gloom, Fears and the like ran playably on a CPU less powerful than a 286!). Rumours abound in the Amiga community that Medhi Ali was paid by Gates to wind up CBM, however my BS detector quivers strongly on that one, as I believe that CBM, especially in the US, was a badly mismanaged company whose shareholders wanted to be in bed with Gates and 'the big boys' as they probably saw it. This shows in the fact that Commodore PC clones were, in the public eye at least, given marketing priority over Amigas in the US (source : Eric Schwartz). What the shareholders saw as a 'minority machine' due to the Amiga's notable foothold in Europe as opposed to the US, just simply wasn't generating enough capital for them. This is an aspect of the computer world that I really, really hate.
    I don't know if or how the Amiga can have a future, or at any rate didn't until I heard of the plan to Open-Source the Amiga OS. This can only be a good thing. Pushing up the spec of computers is also a Good Thing. Filling up these computers with BloatWare that takes up space that could be used better elsewhere is categorically NOT A GOOD THING. That is what keeps the Amiga alive in the minds and hearts of those who used one on a regular basis, because they remember a time when the OS was designed with efficiency and intuitiveness in mind, rather than these pretty, but slow and cumbersome monstrosities that M$ has been churning out for years.
    Perhaps my nostalgia is dissolving my thoughts into a rant, but the damage that Microsoft did, and continues to do with all it's competitors, simply by using marketing and advertising to convice a sometimes sheep-like public that THERE IS NO REAL ALTERNATIVE TO OUR PRODUCT is very palpable indeed to all who try to pick up the computer baton and run ahead of the game that M$ would like to think it controls.
    Yes, Commodore had wonderful ways of shooting itself in the foot, even when it had superior product, but the fact that a bunch of Californinan dentists with a couple of million dollars to burn, plus a team of dedicated engineers could steal a jump on Big Blue and M$ in the 80's when they hadn't got to thinking about the home market yet, at least should give us hope.
    What made the Amiga for me was the fact that it was a computer that a simpleton could at first use, and then grow to understand how it worked at their own pace (Thanks to an inspired OS), and then play arcade quality games on when they got bored. This was the route that really got me into computer-related things, and I have been slightly disillusioned with them ever since the M$/corporate mentality took over circa 1994.
    Only the Linux way of thinking gives me hope that computers could be more than just another way of getting revenue these days, and the open-sourcing of Amiga OS can only teach the lesson of a well-written OS to a new generation.

    Anyway those that really want to know about Amiga, what it did and who was involved, there is a list of them here There are more lists which mention more people, for those who wish to look. The most widely known of former CBM-Amiga engineers, Dave Haynie, occasionally posts here, and can be seen occasionally throughout the 'Net. A list of amiga specs that Haynie rescued from the CBM vaults is here.
    As for the other engineers, I just hope that they're still being nuts somewhere, and haven't been sucked into the corporate tangle that is the dark side of computing today. Jay Miner, as most Amigans know, tragically died in 1994, after many years of illness, but his mark on the technological world is indelible, and the love he and the other engineers had for their little lump of silicon and PCB is echoed in the fact that the Amiga will never be forgotten by those who used them, and some who still use them today.

    Well, please forgive the incoherence, and I hope that I talk a bit of sense to some of you here and there.

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

    www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

    Explanation on legality of this information:

    The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed. It was written by authors who expressly permitted and encourage the redistribution of this software and information. The purpose of this software is not, I repeat not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way a certain protection scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or one of its members. The sources and programs on this site are purely written by 3rd parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods, which is, again, completely legal. This software and information below make it possible for people who legally obtained their DVD movies to view them on their Linux systems.

    Attention

    www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

    NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

    UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

    When I was looking for an app to do this a while back I found Helpdesk 5.1 from Jeremy Robst. It is web based and uses Perl, Apache and an SQL server.

    Looked to be quite good from what I read, although I never actually got to use it. Hope its of use to you.

    • Smalltalk has been used to teach programming to kids and that works.
    • Smalltalk is pure: *everything* is an object.
    • Smalltalk is available in free, commercial and non-commercial versions (squeak, VisualWorksNC, many more...)
    • Smalltalk comes with an IDE, no stupid edit/compile/test cycle for the entire source, no switching between editor and app, you can even change a Smalltalk program *while it's running*.
      Incremental compilation is a big boon to rapid prototyping, I won't explain, you have to *feel* it.
    • OO companies love to see Smalltalk on your resume.
    • A lot of Smalltalks are binary compatible across platforms.
    • Add-ons commercially supported (OOdb, distributed Smalltalk, versioning systems, connectivity to legacy systems, web connectivity etc. etc,)

    My NCP programs are purely experimental - you'd be much better looking at Philip Proudman's work, at Philip Proudman's site, or, if you have a Series 5, Fritz Elfert's work.

    Fritz' code doesn't allow transfers to/from a Series 3, yet. It takes the NCP/RFSV protocols and interfaces them to NFS, so you don't need p2nfs running on the Psion.

    You mean apart from still paying 10 quid a month for a service most other UK ISPs charge a fiver for, or give away for free?

    A static IP address plus fax-to-email and batch FTP is not worth an extra five quid a month (although it is Most Handy, I admit).

    Demon need to cut their price to a fiver a month or risk going down the pan.

    I'm only sticking with them because I've been with them so long that my email address and web site are now so extensively cross-linked by other web sites and search engines that it would take me two years to get all my traffic back.

    According to a "friend in the know" at Telehouse, Scottish Telecom have invested far too much in Demon to let the company sink. Frankly I see little evidence of this- every week I expect Demon's Falco obituary in NTK. Cliff Stanford knew when to quit- nowt to do with Demon needing a telecoms partner; all to do with increased competition.

    It is NOT the full source, it's the first release of one guy's effort of converting the asm to C++. It doesn't even compile.

    He is also NOT a member of the development team in any way shape or form, it is not condoned in any way by the authors.
    This is what the releaser GrossiTheDog says:
    I've decided to make my efforts of converting UltraHLE to C++ public. Note that this is NOT finished source code conversion or anything, this is just 5 minutes work of me playing around - many weeks of work are in store if this project is to be completed.
