Re:Classic Controllers
In the words of Douglas Adams:
- everything that's already in the world when you're born is just normal
- anything that gets invented between then and before you turn thirty is incredibly exciting and creative and with any luck you can make a career out of it
- anything that gets invented after you're thirty is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it until it's been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really.
That is so true. I think of this when I hear the phrase "classic controller". This is new fangled and weird. I can't imagine playing Star Raiders, or Crossfire with one. (Well, I could, it's just that all my reflexes are trained to have a fire button under my left thumb.)

OT: How to get Slashdot to stop spewing bars
If I view the story here it's fine, but when viewing it at the 'friendly' url it spews crap all over the place. Namely those last three bars and that row of bubbles.
Come on Slashdot, if you at least fix this, I'll stop complaining about idle.

Re:outsourcing and unemployment
With adblock, block the following URL pattern:
-
Re:You're right - the tools are stupid.
Please tell that to the slashdot maintainers. The site currently looks like crap in Safari 4 (did so as well in Safari 3), with colored dots (friend / foe / blabla) and strange widgets all over the place. The "Reply to this" button is also rendered broken, and i don't know what else as well. WTF is going on with
/. at the moment? Huge public beta test? That was annoying the hell out of me too. I found that if I add http://c.fsdn.com/sd/cs_sic_controls_new.png to my adblock list then the random graphics disappear (as do some other bits, but I'll live with that).
How did this not get picked up and fixed already on a site this big??

Travel faster than light...
Can you imagine that when we make our first travel faster than light, a Vulcan spaceship(or any other alien except Borgs
:P) will passing by our neighborhood and make the first contact with aliens...?
Noooo, I think I see too much science fiction -
Re:Total Hijack
The only thing that worked for me was to Adblock this image: http://c.fsdn.com/sd/cs_sic_controls_new.png?T_2_5_0_260a
That also blocks some other images like the friend/foe markers, but that is worth it IMHO. -
Re:Get the message
OK, just to continue the rant: now I see gray bars (images), I think they link to this: http://c.fsdn.com/sd/cs_sic_controls_new.png but I'm not positive as I didn't get a "Properties" menu, just an AdBlock which is where I got that from (it might be the background).
So, yeah, like some other poster said, perhaps I should just suck it up and move to their newest coolest buggiest thing; or perhaps I'll just keep complaining, I know which is easier.
And, yes, I just previewed and then middle-clicked on the link that it made out of the PNG URL (didn't think it would make a link out of it, since I'm in "HTML Formatted" mode, but whatever), and if you click it and scroll to the bottom, you'll see the images I saw -- they look like two horizontal bars, and a short vertical bar.
Does anyone have a GreaseMonkey script to make Slashdot behave?
(And: whois FSDN.com? It's owned by SourceForge...)

Re:Slashdot Looks Like Shit in Opera
The line that chokes up firefox is from http://c.fsdn.com/sd/idlecore-tidied.css?T_2_5_0_258b
.comment div.title {
background:#FFFFFF none repeat scroll 0 0 !important;
} If that line is deleted (like with firebug), everything looks fine. -
Re:passes an even tougher test than acid3
That's not a browser bug. Sometimes ".comment div.title" shows up twice in the CSS and the second appearance takes precedence and turns off the background image.
See http://c.fsdn.com/sd/idlecore-tidied.css?T_2_5_0_258b for an example of the broken css and search for ".comment div.title"

Re:I don't know where to post this...
At the moment, I can successfully load this url:
http://s.fsdn.com/sd/core-tidied.css?T_2_5_0_252a
This one also works (in fact, the above loaded from cache and the below from the network):
http://s.fsdn.com/sd/core-tidied.css
It is their content delivery network, something in the configuration must be tricking downforeveryoneorjustme.
