Re:Can't wait
The game I run is a VT-based knockoff of Elite that runs on VMS... and it's multiplayer. No graphics, though!

Simplification and socialization
I agree with Bartle about the facebook games. It blows my mind that the most popular SOCIAL NETWORK has games in which the most social interaction that goes on happens by having annoying requests piped though the walls of people who mostly don't give a crap. And I also think they're ultimately boring. I think you can have a successful game with enduring popularity if it's also a social one. A lot of people back in the heyday of MUDs used to chat more than they played. I made a few modifications to Galactic Trader just to make it more social. It's basically a text-mode version of Elite, but that simplification makes it more accessible. And anyone who can get past the lack of eye-candy will probably enjoy the social aspects of cooperative play.

Re:Don't hurt me.
What you have said is probably true if the objective is to build a cutting-edge game. But people still play cribbage, UNO, and scrabble, even with hi-res 3D MMORPGs and FPSs. The simple (and often social) games are still enticing because the wheels of evolution grind slowly and people's brains aren't really changing with the technology. I still get a pretty steady stream of geeks and freaks to play Galactic Trader, despite its decided lack of sophistication. Some of the minigames on my site are popular as well. People still like Tetris and Arkanoid/Breakout!

Re:Is it possible?
Now guessing what a game will have to do to replace WoW's spot at the top of the hill.... that's another matter.
Clearly, in a huge industry trend towards minimalism, it will be Galactic Trader. Or Nethack.Or, more likely, you'll be eaten by a grue.

Re:Dick
Hey, that sounds like a great idea? Can you help a brother out?

Re:No mention of MUDS?!?No MUD requires a "wretched DOS box"; what you're seeing is Windows' wretched telnet client. You should either go to hilgraeve.com and get the free HTPE upgrade or download another decent client. I like Tera Term as a freebie, but zMUD is a non-free, sophisticated MUD client.
I played on Apocalypse in the 1990s. I still have an immortal character with which I check in from time to time.
/** shameless plug follows **/
Of course, there's always Galactic Trader, but it's more a 1D VT100 adaptation of the Elite game than a MUD. And don't try to use zMUD with it, either. -
Shameless plugSince Elite was mentioned:
Back in the late 80s, Elite was cloned for VMS systems and called "Galactic Trader". If you liked the trading and smuggling in Elite but didn't care for the chunky graphics or taking twenty minutes to land, GT is for you. You just need a halfway decent telnet application with VT100 graphics support.
