Interesting. It reminded me of the "Garfield Minus Garfield" comic, where Garfield is removed from all panels, turning the comic into "the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle." Without Garfield's snark, it does become a story of a man fighting loneliness in suburbia.

But are you smart enough for Garfield Minus Garfield?

I believe this is just an extension of the research done by this guy.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, it makes you wonder how Garfield Minus Garfield, which is not only allowed to continue but approved by Garfield creator Jim Davis, affected that property. Positively, you would assume, because it doesn't seem like there is any sense to give up free publicity and fan following, and I suspect shutting things like that down is due to dated and uncreative thinking.

And if you like Family Circus, might want to give Dean's Comic Booth a shot (a few are NSFW).

Peanuts is still being published 10 years after the creator's death!

While I don't care for Peanuts very much, I'd rather have reruns of a classic comic than the absolute drivel that Garfield has been for the last 10 years. I can only fathom that A) newspapers can't find anything else to fill that space, or B) nobody dares get rid of such a "classic" strip like Garfield. Jim Davis doesn't even try to be funny anymore.

Of course no criticism of Garfield is complete without referencing both Garfield Minus Garfield and Garkov. The saddest part is that G-G is significantly funnier than the "legitimate" strips published every day and most of the time the Markov-generated strips in Garkov are indistinguishable from what Jim Davis writes.

I suppose this means that Jim Davis fails the Turing Test.

For some reason that is incredibly funny in a schadenfreude kind of way. I really loved the description the site provides:

Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.

By the time I got back to Sept 25th I was sure that Jon had hung himself, and it all made sense. Great laughs, thanks!

Someone should mod you down for posting a link to an xkcd image, depriving us of the alt text. Granted, that one wasn't the best, but it's still as much a part of the comic as Jon is part of Garfield.

It was that sort of day. Then I got this spam, which simply said:
'Louder screaming is only the beginning'

That may be the one and only spam that made my day better.
