Re:Bootable antivirus discs?
Gdata antivirus is a pretty good antivirus for Windows which has a bootable disk (linux-made, btw).
Even if I've bought the online version, they sent me the disk by mail anyway. I was not allowed to refuse it, it seems. For my safety, I suppose :-) -
Re:With WoW too
"I'm calling shenannigans. What AV program removed mIRC? That sounds suspiciously like 'Microsoft AV deletes firefox!'"
Much as I'd like to credit MS with something of that calibre, it's actually the G Data antivirus that insisted that mIRC is a horrible risk.
At a wild guess, I don't think it really merits a comparison with MS deleting some competing product. Think Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice, that which is adequately explained by stupidity." I.e., I don't think G Data has some actual commercial interest in getting people off IRC. More like, well, that's what you get when you let a bunch of incompetent monkeys play with the signatures and heuristics rules files. But that's just a wild guess. -
Re:Simple
For the Apple Mac OS X
GPGMail plugin for Apple Computer's Mail.app works wonderfully. Using GnuPG from DarwinPorts/OpenDarwin or following the binary download from www.gnupg.org, there will be a .dmg for the Mac that has an installable .pkg in the disk image. This is the simplest way to do encryption with the mac. There are some GnuPG front ends available for the Mac from www.gnupg.org which are helpful in generating keys, importing public keys etc etc.
The only hitch with using GPGMail with the DarwinPorts version of GnuPG is, GPGMail expects the gpg binary to be in /usr/loca/bin and it's hard-coded. This is normal and good, but DarwinPorts places it in /opt/local/bin. The work around is creating a symlink: "ln -s /opt/local/bin/gpg /usr/local/bin/gpg" w/o the quotes.
For Windows.
A user already mentioned WinPT before and there are many posts already mentioning Enigmail with Thunderbird. There is also a GnuPG plugin (here too)for OutLook Express.
Those are just two, other options will come up from other people -
Outlook/OE
If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, get the Gdata plug-in.
It is a very easy install. Easier than Enigmail (which is good, too). In fact, it will install GPG for you if you don't already have it. -
GnuPGExch
If your family and friends insist on using Outlook or Outlook Express, try pointing them at G-Data's, GnuPG Pluginfor those MUAs. One downloadable Win32
.exe and a simple installation puts buttons to sign/verify and encrypt/decrypt on the toolbar.
Because let's face it, /we/ all know how to encrypt our email. But until "Your Mom" (TM) can do it, it's not useful. -

What Outlook problem?
Although I use enigmail at home, I use the gdata Outlook plug-in at work. It is much easier & smoother that enigmail.

Re:Free PGP? How about GnuPGP
It does work in OutLook. I'm using it right now.
Go get it here:

Nonsense
Here is a GPG plug-in for Outlook. This plugin is so good and so easy, you will actually consider using Outlook as your mail client.
It will even install GPG for you if you don't already have it. -
Re:Hm.
There is pretty good stuff around:
german privacy site sponsored by the German government. And also this one which features an M$ Outlook plugin.
They are easy to install and there is a great introduction to GPG in the pdfs provided on the first link (German only). -
Re:wait..
There is a free outlook plugin though it doesn't appear to have been maintained for some time. I have it installed at home (Outlook XP) and it works OK.

Re: Hm
There are already many good Windows programs for GnuPG. Look at the fine WinPT program which let you encrypt texts with every mail program available. Not as comfortable as a build in program but still easy to use. For key management you can use GPA. In Germany there is already a project which combines all these programs in one windows installable program with a very good documentation: GnuPP. There is also a plugin for Outlook available (not Express).

GnuPG Plugin for Outlook
For all of you, who want to use GnuPG with Outlook there is a plugin at Gdata AG. The latest version includes an english version, too.

Re:Try the many front ends

Re:Mixed feelingsTake a look at http://www3.gdata.de/gpg/. It's in German. Use Google to translate.
It's beta, but if you use Outlook, it seems to do the job very nicely. If you go to the GPG page, there is also a link for another program that is a plug in for outlook express.

Re:Future of pgpThere is an open source (GPL) plugin for gnupg for Outlook here. It's now at version 0.91 and the main development language is German, but there is an english translation.
(PS : I haven't tried it yet so ymmv)
