  1. Why are Sun Workstations so good? on Sun Solaris 9 for x86 for Evaluation · · Score: 1

Many people here are saying that the the Sparc computers from Sun are much better than standard PC hardware. What exactly is the benefit. It doesn't seem to be speed/price.

Strange. If you are right why did SuSE, Mandrake, Debian all agree to the LSB specifications? You should read the facts. SuSE 8.0 is as LSB compatible as Redhat 7.3. So there is no problem here.
KDE/Gnome: Why can't you accapt that Free Software/Open Source means that EVERYONE is allowd to change something. If Red Hat wants to make the two desktop easier to use for new users wheres the problem? Will somebody be killed because of this?
You are perhaps right with the non-open source software they sell. But SuSE for example sells much more closed source. If this is a problem for you try Debian.

Did you ever tried Ogg and compared them? Ogg encoded Music sounds so much better you will not believe it. It's much biggger than between PNG and Gif/Jpeg. You can compare a q 0 Ogg (~ 60 kbps) with a 128 kpbs MP3. If you think that is not a difference why don't you use Mp2 files. Mp3 files are also not 10 times smaller if you think that is needed to be noticeable.

What, Mplayer is not stable? You must have something wrong. My Mplayer plays even totally corrupted AVIs and Video CDs with which Windows Media or the DivX Playa crash instantly! And I use gcc 2.96 which should not work with Mplayer! Just read the documentation before installing it.

I think your arguments are not correct if I got it right from other pages: Quicktime is just the container for video, audio and other media formats. You can put anything in this like a mpeg movie, a Sorenson movie, a Ogg Vorbis audio file or plain text. Avi is another container which much less features (index gets corrupted when file is not complete...). So the Sorenson codec has nothing to do with the quicktime container. Ogg is producing another container to have an alternative to Quicktime.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Not as comfortable as a build in program but still easy to use. For key management you can use GPA. In Germany there is already a project which combines all these programs in one windows installable program with a very good documentation: GnuPP. There is also a plugin for Outlook available (not Express).

I agree. This can't be true. How can a simple Action/Sci-Fi movie beat these two classics. The story is just so simple in Matrix with no real suprising moments. But I still think Clockwork Orange is no Sci-Fi film. It's a critic of the society. The futuristic elements are only to not accuse people directly. So this list is really wrong in my opinion.

Have you ever tried Mozilla and compared the compatibility to the official W3C standards? Or did you just take some sites which use special IE only tags? Yes IE ist the best "Microsofts own web standard" browser but Mozilla is the best official web standard browser.
And why is Mozilla not fest enough developed. They started from scratch with no code (they decided to not use the Netscape code) in 1999. At this time Microsoft already developed their IE for years and the initial code base has been bought from another company! And now Mozilla is much more compatible to the web standards and has much more features (tabs, better security/cookie handling, zoom...).

    2. He wasn't really interested in the available software at all. He only looked at the offical Sharp site but compares the amount of this software to all the Palm/WinCE programs which can be found somewhere in the internet. If he would look at zaurus.sourceforge.net and zauruszone.com he would find some other programs. Also the KDE project begins with porting desktop applications. I can already play Quake and Nethack on the Zaurus!
Additionally every new PDA OS lacks programs. Why had anybody bought thinks like Palm OS or even Windows 95? In the beginning there were no good applications for them? With this in mind you cannot really critisize the lack of software (perhaps when you still use DOS because there are no really good win applications you can :-)

Or the new SuSE 7.3 it has easy configuration utilities for Scanners and TV-Cards which is also important for the desktop.
The real problem I see are the recent layoffs of the DRI crew from VA Linux. There is no one left to pay for the extremely difficult 3D driver development. Perhaps it would be good to establish a possibility for users to fund the DRI project.

Using more than one license like mozilla will try now could be a good idea for some projects.
