Re:It's pretty simple
Yes, the efficiency levels for most classes of appliances vary greatly. Some factors that matter for a washing machine:
Did you know that some models/parts of the country, even on the cold water setting the washer will run a heater to get the water up above ground temperature? (Think about the alternative when doing laundry in Minnesota in the winter)
Is it using a shitty electric motor, or does it have a reasonable efficiency rating?
If a washing machine does not spin dry effectively, it increases the energy used to dry the clothes. Efficient water extraction is credited to the washer,

Dryers have CEf (combined energy factor) and most other appliances have plain EF (efficiency factor).

Re:20 devices isn't enough
Serious question......what benefit do you get from a dishwasher being attached to the internet?
You can monitor how much time is left in the cycle, it will notify you if the rinse agent is low and needs refilling, and if you use dish detergent pods, you can have it automatically keep track of how many pods you've used and reorder pods on Amazon for you (similar to Amazon Dash Button) automatically when you are running low.

Re:You cannot outlaw bots
Now if people would just make bot software to do my dishes and mow my lawn...
You mean, like, some sort of...dish washing machine? And maybe some sort of automatic, robotic lawn-mower?
I mean, seriously, did you even try googling these things?

Re:UsabilityIt's a fairly safe bet that you do not read manuals either. If you did, you would know that they are generally produced either by an engineer with negligible communications skills or by a technical writer who has not been given adequate time to understand the device
Sorry, I call Bullshit."To change the temperature, press and release the
WARMER or COLDER button. SET will illuminate in
the display, as well as the set temperature. To
change the temperature, tap either the WARMER or
COLDER button (while SET is illuminated) until the
desired temperature is displayed."
--Instructions on setting the temperature on a "GE" brand fridge., from: http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/images/t07/0000004/r04441v-1.pdf0 IS OFF
9 IS COLDEST
--Quote from another (cheaper) GE fridge instruction manual. http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/images/t07/0000008/r08351v-1.pdfFor colder temperatures, turn the knob towards Colder.
For warmer temperatures, turn the knob towards Cold.

NONE of these seem to be produced by someone with "negligible communications skills". All are quite clear. -

Re:never
Around $200+ U.S. They have a bare-bones green character display, nothing too fancy, but still legible enough to read.

Re:EZ-Bake ovens and Geek childhood
In fact, you aren't the first person to think of this. I present to you: GE's Advantium oven.
The people who claim Microwave Ovens are the successors are Fools! Fools! The reason being that the EZ Bake works off of light bulbs. (Incidentally, you would have wanted to rig a better lightbulb into the EZ Bake Oven to make it more powerful - I suggest Halogen.) The Advantium cooks with, you guessed it, Light.
But, sadly, your joke has, in fact, been brought to, um, light. Sorry.

Not quite Microwave Plus, but...The Advantium oven from GE offers something similar. From GE's site:
Finding and Using Recipes
To find and use stored custom microwave recipes:- Press the MICROWAVE/OVEN LIGHT button.
- Turn dial to RECIPE and press the dial to enter.
- CUSTOM#: and the categories you entered will appear.
- Turn dial to your recipe and press the dial to enter.
- Press the START/PAUSE button or the selector dial to start cooking.
Not quite as easy as the VCR+ idea, but a step in that direction.
Plus, it cooks with light! How retro-2001 of them.
