Re: Big, fat, NO FREAKIN' DUH!

GeNToo
You mean they'll make this thing for real?

Re:More Bloat ?
There are honest pros and cons for the move. The pros are pretty compelling (and I say that as a holdout from the beginning).
It's not that I don't see any of the pros. Systemd transcends any pros with the shocking attitude of it's developers, poor design and ever-expanding scope.
For those who have doubts, not just about Systemd but about other monolithic consolidations and discarding many time tested and good working systems, there is still a refuge: BSD.
Unless you're stuck with linux for other reasons... eg: hardware support. I'd switch to FBSD if I could, more likely I'll end up running slackware or gentoo.

Re:Boring...That's why they made GeNToo!
Finally you can get the best of both worlds! The Win32 subsystem is such a mess, the Linux kernel is a mess. Once you have the GNU tools on the NT kernel, you get a very solid OS that even rivals Solaris 10 in many respects.
It's only been compiling for just a bit over 4 years, so I'm hopeful. It's not like it has crashed or anything... no that wouldn't make any sense...

it's called GeNToo

Re:Compiled Kernel not necessarily getting fatter.
"Then ask why Linus and Andrew - not to mention the distros - are allowing this, IF true."
They're doing active development on 2.6 and they don't want to fork 2.7 because apparently they're making good progress working as they are. They expect the distros to do regression testing -- something they are not equipped to do on a sufficiently large scale. Examples of major bugs allowed through are a memory leak when burning CDs (I think that was 2.6.5) and in 2.6.8 I can't have SATA and ATA devices connected to my motherboard (which supports both, and works under other versions of the Linux kernel and FreeBSD) at the same time. Those are the major ones that have affected me but there's always something.
Since each new kernel contains new bugs, upgrading isn't very useful because it just replaces bugs you know about and have worked around with ones you don't know about.
From the Gentoo-on-NT FAQ:
"Infidels! Linux rocks!
Yes, it rocks that much that we are looking for stable alternatives. Especially the 2.6 kernel has been *ahem* interesting. If the kernel hackers got their act together and released a really stable version of the 2.6 kernel we might want to use it. But they don't so we don't."

Re:One of the advantages of Linux
Hey, that's true of NT too!

Re:Further Research...
According to topic
http://gentooexperimental.org/screenshot.png
is "when things go wrong"
VxD's under NT OS? I don't think so -
Is this really a joke?
According to this, they claim it is real.
"You must be kidding!
No, we're quite serious. Finally you can get the best of both worlds! The Win32 subsystem is such a mess, the Linux kernel is a mess. Once you have the GNU tools on the NT kernel, you get a very solid OS that even rivals Solaris 10 in many respects." -
I THINK IT MAY BE REAL!!!
*happy dance* *happy dance* *doing the happy dance!*
If you check the FAQ for the project, they say that it is a REAL project! There's even installation instructions to get it up and running! Now if you bozos would stop slashdotting the damn thing into the next century, I might be able to try it out!

Further Research...
The screenshots leave much to be desired. Their bootlog.txt, likewise, looks hacked together from a standard NT boot and a CLI transcript. Plus, their Quick Install Reference mentions a "nt-isocreator.sh" script which is missing from the main page, pending a blessing from their lawyer friend.
Perhaps someone could check on #gentoo-nt on irc.freenode.net (also from the quick-install ref) to see what's up?
Assuming this is a joke, kudos to them for back-dating the page; I'm now curious. -

Subtle April 1st jokesI agree, the jokes should be subtle enough to fool at least one person. I like to read something, think long and hard about it, and still not be able to figure out if it's true or not. Like these ones:
http://gentooexperimental.org/nt/
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-cvs&m=111233809718017
& w=2Real or fake? I don't know. On the other hand, "First PC Virus Spreads to Humans" is so bad that there is no real reason to click the link except that every story on
/. is a "joke" today. -
A1 joke
Read http://gentooexperimental.org/nt I give it a 9/10 rating. I believed for the 5 minutes I was thinking about how dumb the idea was.

Re:*Yawn*
Gentoo already has their April 1st post, GeNToo: http://gentooexperimental.org/nt/ (Gentoo with the Windows NT kernel).

gentoo sucks, or maybe you dont know how to use itthere's no one block of text that says "IMPORTANT STUFF CHANGED".
True, this is why the good Lord gave us scripts. You'll find enotice on the front page of the Gentoo script repository. Other posters have suggested alternatives to etc-update. You may not have known there is a nice Apache2 HOWTO for Gentoo. And I bet if you ask nicely on Gentoo Forums, someone will tell you how to protect your bind.conf.
I often see people fuming "$DISTRO sucks 'cause it doesn't do $x!" when maybe they should ask "How can I do $x with $DISTRO?"
PS, Putting ~x86 in make.conf on a production server means you really are a masochist and get off on this kind of thing anyway
:)
