Some still believe that it's unadulterated truth even though it's obvious that the bible is a book written by "man" for "man" to control "man"..... The whole purpose of the Catholic church is about control of the unwashed masses.

That's probably not the "whole purpose" of the Catholic church. I wouldn't know, I'm not Catholic. Southern Baptists, for example believe that The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man.. Gerald Schroeder has some very interesting books attempting to bridge Science and Genesis together. Schroeder is both a Jewish theologist and teacher and physicist, although his background is a bit more weighted towards science.

Some how, I have a bad feeling I'm about to get both down modded and a bunch of flame responses. But that said, there really are a few educated spiritual people out there, you don't have to be 100% pro-science or 100% pro-religion.

You've gotta read Gerald Schroeder's books. They're written for the non-physicist, and they explain how the "6-days of creation" frame of reference is a quite logical frame of reference -- it's not arbitrary.

In it Gerard Schroeder argues that those 6 days were periods of time measured from the point of time around the Big Bang, and that they just happen to expand to billions of years when viewed from our time-frame. You may or may not buy his argument, but its interesting.

Something else that is interesting is that from before science ever questioned a literal six-day creation (from our point of view) that Jewish scholars were interpreting them as not being literal 24-hour periods as well (not because they were making excuses but because that was what they saw as the natural interpretation of the text)

You are misinformed. ID is not held by "dumb religionists" but some pretty smart people. Had you been following current events you would know the former atheist (probably the best well-known critic of Theism in general) Anthony Flew jumped ship and is now a Deist. Not a fundamentalist as the slashdot groupthink would believe.

Why did he jump ship? Many reasons, but the primary one is a book written by Gerald Schroeder, who is an MIT-trained physicist with over 60 published articles in scientific journals. And he's a Jew, too. Not the rabid fundamentalist you painted in your post.
